Begins the latest singles are please please please in the chart topping espresso as well as the announcement of a brand new album It's called short and sweet and it's set to drop on August 23rd Sabrina Carpenter welcome to the show thank you for having me what's your mindset like going into this are you someone who appreciates a spicy meal uh appreciates is the wrong word um they always just kind of like happen to me and then I deal with it um but I I I was telling you earlier I really like what it does for my sinuses so I'm really excited for them to be open like super open you know maybe I'll come out a changed woman [Music] I think everything's a trick so I'm just scared just like I don't actually know you we just met Sean okay okay and these your chicken right mhm okay that one's lovely tastes really good so it's interesting to me that one of your biggest songs nonsense almost didn't make the last album is there a lesson to be learned there and if so how might it have influenced or shaped your approach to making a track list this time around it made me want to trust my my personal favorites a little bit more I think like when you're making a record over time you want to play it for your best friends you want to play it for your family and then you start to get in your head a little bit on everyone's favorites and I think the lesson I learned with nonsense was that this song was so Kindred with my personality and I started to get in my head on like what fits a record versus what fits like Sabrina or myself as an artist and um that taught me so many lessons moving forward making the next record I think now I just whatever feels the most honest and connects to me the most I feel like will connect with other people give the wings love they'll love you back oh no okay one two [Music] three so good not blasting us out yet no there we go in fact like I don't want to get cocky Keep It Coming keep it coming no um that's lovely I love that one you know a lot of times comedians they'll obsess about uh linguistic specificity you know I'm wondering if there's a coral are for songwriters like how much of honing a song is just playing with a particular word until the lyric lands just right that's such a good question I think sometimes I really do go into it with such a specific you know word or phrase that I love and I do kind of obsess over it until I can find the right place for it whether it's in that song or a completely different song I'm not a comedian so I don't know what they do um and you know all I know is that sometimes comedians have lines that fall flat and just get booed and that's how I feel sometimes as a songwriter sometimes you have lines and songs that fall flat and get booed and sometimes you have you know the best joke of the night so yeah sometimes you spin it and that's why you got to take the shots you know Sabrina yeah I'm not a sports girl but I think I know what you just said I think I know what you just [Music] said do you have a lot of friends like I'm just I guess I asked the question because I'm like if you if you have friends and you feel like you have good friends then I trust you and we're good yeah listen say what you will about me but like I'm a dog you know what I mean like the same six best friends I have now are the same six best friends I had when I was years old that's what I want you to tell me you have long relationships CU if you have long relationships then I'm fine yeah but if you're like yeah like I kind of switch friend groups every other month no no they can say what they will about me but I am a ride or die I'm in the fox with okay then let's do it m H so I noticed that you'll often times take a break from your live show to talk one-on-one with a fan who's sitting in the front row which can lead to everything from you know you Fielding General Life advice to impromptu marriage proposals in the crowd what's the most over your head you've ever felt during one of those one-on-one therapy conversations in the middle of a concert someone told me their dad left this is not funny by the way like exactly this is how I felt humor is how you work your way through unfortunate you know you have people recording being like Oh so she makes light of of people's dad's it's like no oh my gosh you know but it's a show are we supposed to entertain and banter and usually the person has a good sense of humor if they're telling me that their dad left in front of a crowd of a couple thousand people so I I just was I was taken back and then somehow it turned into like a really beautiful conversation and I was able to like segue into my next song um because I like to take people out of the show for a second it just makes it feel a little bit more like a slumber party or something my pet is being opened my my my tongue my senses are starting to Bubble making lots of new friends over here but it's nothing crazy oh this is y'all's okay maybe I should have a bigger bite I'm being a little bit right take it in okay M these are really good so far okay thank you um but this one has kind of a smokiness to it loses M yes I like that do you do anything unique or unconventional to protect your voice like I always wonder if uh singers approach it kind of like a skincare routine I actually do I do a lot of steaming I do a lot of you know obviously vocal warm-ups but I think there's just a lot of different methods and like random like herbal Honeys that people wouldn't expect yeah that keep it really healthy and because when you're constantly just like every night it's like it's crazy to be able to maintain that for a very long period of time without getting horse you know horse I hate that I hate that that word is what it's used for but that's what it is it kind of sounds like what it is you know it's like dishwasher you know horse that's actually such a good point yeah what else would you call a dishwasher they they nailed they crushed it Bullseye right off the right off the bat I know that should be the rest of the interview I was just talking about words that that sound like what they should hot sauce is another one that sounds like what it should that is what it is you know yeah and on that topic next or like death trap is meow's Revenge here in the this is Fat Cat meow's Revenge I love [Music] cats do people like get get in the comments and like judge like her bites weren't big enough yeah there's some of them that are like that over the years I'm looking at you n but uh but you're you're uh you're giving a good commitment to each one you don't have to worry about that at all and I will say this is the first one that kind of takes a little bit of definitely I just felt the shift I felt the shift but I'm not I'm not scared yeah you got this you got this yeah maybe that's a Taurus thing we're a little stubborn are you stubborn yeah I think so some sometimes I look at that stuff and I'm like yeah that kind of that is me that is me and then some of them I'm like you know it's a bit farfetched I agree with that so I know that you're a lifelong Beatles fan yes I am you site across the universe as one of your favorite movies The White Album is one of your favorite records meeting Paul McCartney one of your career highlights so what I want to do here is play a little game where I'll give you a Beatles fact okay and you tell me if it's truth or nonsense well this is going to be wild okay let's do it first up the origin story from yesterday came from Paul McCartney waking up one morning and humming a Melody about breakfast repeating scrambled eggs baby I love scrambled eggs so he wouldn't forget the tune um I know that part of this is correct because it happened to him in a dream and I know that he wrote the song in a dream I didn't know about the scrambled eggs bit but is that true you're going with truth you know your lore you know your lore all right up next The Beatles long mop hair was so controversial that in 1963 they ran a newspaper ad that read best wishes to all the starving hairdressers and their families best wishes to all the starving hairdressers in the feels a little current I'm going to say no you are correct that is nonsense it was actually the Rolling Stones who did that look at you two for two yeah you know just got to trust yourself on Bohemian rap city Freddy Mercury plays the very same Century old beIN grand piano that Paul McCartney used when the Beatles recorded Hey Jude 7 years prior I'm going to say yes right it's like so specific that soic and Freddy like knows his [ __ ] like you know what I mean I feel like he would he would like that you're piecing together Context Clues here in a way that you are now three for three Sabrina thank you one more for you we'll see if you can run the table at one point the relationship between Paul and George got so fraught that after the breakup when Paul was on stage he would incessantly challenge George to come meet him on stage so the two could duel okay so this one I feel like I go both ways because they that's such playful banter those boys so I want to say I want to say yes it was actually David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar that would so that was not what I was going to say um the color of this is making me um fearful good place to be [Music] okay hinero Sherry Koji yeah no no no that one's fine yeah then this is yeah have you just has anyone ever project out in front of you never front of me believe it or not uh why do you think you might no no I just want to make sure that I'm setting a standard yeah um an expectation it's all right if you got to let it go the struggle is part of the spectacle what would I like to drink um let's do this one I'm going to hit this milkshake that you brought yeah actually milk tastes so bad bro chocolate milkshake that's where it's at yeah kind of clutch there you go okay was fun it definitely affects you yeah but these should that's the point that's the show you got to be moved exactly off your game you got to leave with a new outlook online right don't trust anyone it's getting fun that's what you got to lean into yeah there's a long history a great tradition of misheard lyrics and pop smashes totally is there any sort of creative strategy to the difficult to decipher but Ultra catchy vocal performance on a song like espresso I I do like to pay attention attention to if people can understand lyrics because so much of what I like is you know the punchline and if people don't know the punchline it's like was waste of 30 seconds um and I'm learning as I go I don't think sorry that one came back to haunt me yeah I don't think uh I don't think I have it all figured out but that's like how I feel about me espresso I've heard a lot of people that were like she should have said that's that blonde espresso duh like and I'm like well yes that is another song I think as well that that deserves its spot in the world but this one for me was like you know me espresso just felt like the right thing to say and and it rhymes with the line of for it and just all the reasons and I just think it's so funny like maybe everyone's [Laughter] right how are you with red flags like do you see them no red that's a red flag yeah so take a bite it's a self-evident red [Music] flag really want to eat more chicken okay this does have a build on it yeah and you're probably starting to feel that now wow that one's so exciting oh my gosh coming live sinuses loosening up yeah m yeah so you began uploading covers to the internet at 9 years old the tradition that you continued to this day you know often times in your concert reserving some of your set list to pay Tri s Girl by the way Let it Fly get a long long leash on the show we think about a popular song that is low-key like the hardest to cover live I really like to incorporate covers because I started covering other this one is really spicy Sean I know I know I'm with you um it's like my tongue now is trying to like revert back into my throat I know yeah lot of things happening over here yeah yeah it's a red flag that one's a red flag big red flag um like songs with a big range like sometimes that's the point because I like to challenge myself as much as I can and add like a different element to the show where I can sing it a little bit more how are we feeling is like the skies that answer was [ __ ] I don't know what I just told you like that's how I'm feeling right now I was like what did I just say it sounded like you nailed the Dismount to me to be honest with you so what do you think we should do should we like do you want to take a break do you want to slow it down do you want to just Dive Right In we got to do it right we got to do it is it this one applaud whoever made the wings they're lovely that last one was was like the saddest thing that's ever happened to me um but we made it through and honestly I haven't been as snotty as I thought I was going to be yeah you're good yeah you're good right exactly um yeah we're good we're good actually this one's kind of fine where does headlining the Bethlehem Music Fest fall on your list of career accomplishments that's so sweet of you to ask that was like my first like maybe I'm going to be successful like that was truly cuz I think anywhere where you grow up and you have like the biggest music festival in your town like you know that was such a part of my childhood going every year that when I got to headline I was like this is one of my biggest dreams and that has only turned into like so many of the cool things that I've always wanted to do that you know even the show like it's really just you know it's such a it's such a gift to like get to watch things and then find yourself getting to do them and you can just kind of like look back and know that like all the all the like tour bus nights where you know the hot water goes out and you don't have hot water it's like those things are building character and prepare you for those moments I'm a big believer in timing so love music fest though big fan all right Sabrina is this one like spicy in solidarity in solidarity yeah okay wait it's just not coming out it's like catchup oh there you go oh I didn't like that sound someone went oh okay that means you did it right so so before I do this um like is tomorrow going to be hard for me does it does it have like a long lasting effect I'm just trying to G yeah so what you're feeling right now in the next 15 to 20 minutes will just be a happy memory okay okay you'll be like I could I could do that again you know you'll forget the pain that you went through okay tomorrow I'm not making any promises you know like yeah what happens well we're not going to see each other
