Renal System Medications: Urinary Tract Stimulants, Antispasmodics, and Analgesics
Overview
In this lecture, Cathy from Level Up RN covers medications related to the renal system including urinary tract stimulants, antispasmodics, and analgesics. A mini-quiz is provided at the end to test the student's understanding of key concepts.
Urinary Tract Stimulant: Bethanacol
- Use: Treats non-obstructive urinary retention
- Mode of Action: Stimulates cholinergic receptors, causing contraction and emptying of the bladder, and increases gastric motility.
- Side Effects:
- Cholinergic symptoms: flushing, sweating, urinary urgency, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hypotension
- Remember with "salivation, lacrimation, urination, and defecation"
- Nursing Care & Patient Teaching:
- Administer 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals to reduce nausea/vomiting
- Mnemonic: "Beth" (shy bladder needs bethanacol) and "col" (cholinergic side effects)
Urinary Tract Antispasmodic: Oxybutynin
- Use: Manages overactive bladder symptoms (urinary frequency, urgency, nocturia)
- Mode of Action: Inhibits acetylcholine in the bladder, reducing urgency and frequency.
- Side Effects:
- Anticholinergic effects: dry mouth, urinary retention, constipation, blurred vision
- Remember with "can't pee, can't see, can't spit, can't poop"
- Mnemonic: "Buttoned in" to stop bladder from trembling
Urinary Tract Analgesic: Finazopyridine
- Use: Alleviates UTI symptoms (burning, pain, frequency, urgency). Not an antibiotic.
- Mode of Action: Acts as a local anesthetic on the urinary tract
- Side Effects:
- Orange-red urine discoloration (can stain clothes, bedding, and soft contact lenses)
- Mnemonic: "Pyra" in finazopyridine reminds of "fire" (burning feeling of UTI) and orange-red fire colors
Quiz Questions
- Bethanacol administration timing: 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals
- Cholinergic effects of Oxybutynin: False, it causes anticholinergic effects
- Side effect of Finazopyridine: Orange-red urine discoloration
Conclusion
- Reiterate the effectiveness of flashcards for learning pharmacology
- Encouragement to subscribe and engage with Level Up RN content for further study assistance
This summary captures the key components and practical mnemonics provided in the lecture to aid in the understanding and memorization of renal system medications. It provides an organized framework for studying and remembering essential drug information for nursing students.
