Week 2, Module 6, Understanding the UN's Role in White-Collar Crime

Module 7 deals with the United Nations. So this is the first module dealing with the role of international organizations. And it will concern how the United Nations is a source of law with respect to international white-collar crime. There are several ways that the United Nations plays a role in being the source. of laws. On the one hand, in some cases, the United Nations Security Council has the authority and on a regular basis makes resolutions that deal with international white-collar crime. We also see that the General Assembly on a regular basis passes resolutions that establish various types of international white-collar crimes and it also requires governments and even international organizations to take action to either prevent or to prosecute people who are violating international white-collar crime. For instance, we see all the time that the United Nations does that. in the area of financing of terrorism, or it's very active in the area of economic sanctions. We also, in this module, will look at some of the UN specialized organizations. So, for instance, there's something known as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, it's known by its acronym UNODC. So this organization, which is based in Vienna, helps implement various treaties, such as the UN Convention against the trafficking of prohibited narcotic and psychotropic substances. So it will help implement that. By training officials, especially in developing countries, it will put various things on its website to help identify which officials in different countries are the main contacts in terms of prosecuting crimes mentioned in conventions. So this module will help students understand the quite broad role of the United Nations, and it will also help students learn how to find more information so that they can deal with the various United Nations resolutions and treaties, whether... The student is trying to strengthen the due diligence of one of the businesses it's working in, or in some cases the student may be trying to do research or may be trying to help a local government or even a national government in terms of working with the United Nations.
