Review of the Mido Ocean Star GMT Rainbow Dial

First Impressions

  • Initially available only from Hodinkee.
  • Unboxing shared a week ago; now sharing a review after a week of use.
  • Positive Aspects: Striking, beautiful design, comfortable mesh bracelet.
  • Major Drawback: Difficult to read the time.
    • Mirror-polished hands create low contrast.
    • Small, stubby hour hand; skinny minute hand with small lume section.
    • GMT hand loomed, but GMT ring is not lumed.

Negatives

Readability Issues

  • Low Contrast Hands: Mirror-polished, appear black in reflections, hard to see in various lighting.
  • Short Hour Hand: Difficult to find; Long Minute Hand: Skinny, small lume section.
    • GMT hand inaccurate, varies from being right on time to 20 minutes slow.
  • Crystal Distortion: Chapter ring minute markings disappear when off-axis.
  • Lume: Quarter-hour indices glow well, others less so; need strong charge.

GMT Hand

  • Sometimes inaccurate, varies in registration to the dial.

Bracelet and Strap

  • Bracelet: Good quality mesh, breathable, comfortable.
    • Fold-over clasp is loose and rattles.
    • No micro-adjust on the clasp; alternative method with double drilled lugs.
  • Rubber Strap: Vintage appearance, less breathable, uncomfortable for hairy wrists.
    • Preferable to invest in a better clasp with micro-adjust.

Positives

  • Aesthetics: Beautiful, fun to look at, shines well.
  • Water Resistance: True 200 meters, good for swimming.
  • Movement: Gains about 1 second a day, high accuracy similar to Omega Speedmaster.

Design

  • Case: Very well executed, flawless polish.
  • World Time Bezel: Works well, but no loomed 24-hour chapter ring.
  • Potential: Fun watch despite flaws.

Conclusion

  • Beautiful, fun watch with notable flaws in readability and design choices.
  • Good for collection but not an ideal everyday readable watch.
