DNA Replication Animation

Overview

  • Computer Animation & Molecular Research: Recent advancements allow observation of DNA replication in live cells.
  • Visualization: Depicts miniature biochemical machines copying DNA strands.

DNA Replication Process

  • Initial Process:
    • DNA enters the replication assembly line from the bottom left.
  • Helicase Function:
    • A blue molecular machine known as helicase unwinds the DNA double helix.
    • Spins at a high speed equivalent to a jet engine.
    • Unwinds the helix into two separate strands.

DNA Strand Copying

  • Continuous Strand:
    • One DNA strand is duplicated continuously.
    • Observed being spooled off to the right.
  • Discontinuous Strand:
    • The other strand requires backward copying.
    • Copied in segments by drawing it out in loops.

Outcome

  • Result is the formation of two new DNA molecules.
