Installing a New Toilet: Step-by-Step Guide

Introduction

  • Purpose: Replace an old toilet to improve function and save water and money.

Step 1: Measure the Old Toilet

  • Measure from back wall to closet bolts.
  • Measure from side wall to side of bowl.
  • Choose elongated bowls for comfort or round bowls for smaller spaces.

Step 2: Remove the Old Toilet

  1. Turn off water and flush the tank to empty it.
  2. Remove excess water with a sponge.
  3. Disconnect supply lines from the tank.
  4. Unscrew tank nuts and lift off tank (wear gloves).
  5. Remove water from bowl using a water solidifier or sponge.
  6. Loosen and remove nuts holding bowl to floor.
  7. Lift bowl and set it aside.

Step 3: Prepare the Flange

  1. Remove old wax ring.
  2. Stuff a rag in the drain hole to prevent gas and debris.
  3. Scrape excess wax with a putty knife.
  4. Remove old closet bolts.
  • If flange is broken, use a repair kit.
  • Ensure flange is at the correct height if adding new flooring (use height adjustment products if necessary).

Step 4: Install the New Toilet

  1. Install new closet bolts and secure with washers.
  2. Set new toilet upside down on a towel.
  3. Soften wax ring under warm water and install on toilet.
  4. Remove rag from drain.
  5. Lower toilet into place over closet bolts carefully (may need help due to weight).
  6. Press toilet down firmly, ensuring it's square with the wall.
  7. Secure toilet with cap bases, washers, and nuts, alternating tightening.
  8. Trim excess bolts with a hacksaw and pop on caps.

Step 5: Install the Tank

  1. Flip tank over to install bolts and rubber gasket.
  2. Set tank in place on the bowl.
  3. Tighten nuts by hand, alternating to keep alignment (use level).
  4. Connect water supply and turn on slowly.
  5. Check for leaks and tighten bolts if needed.
  6. Flush toilet multiple times to ensure no leaks (replace and reset wax ring if there are leaks).
  7. Install seat using a screwdriver.
  8. Caulk around base if desired (skipped to easily detect future leaks).

Final Touches

  • Set the top on the tank.
  • Enjoy your new toilet.
