welcome to another video you've got Mr Everything English and today we are dissecting the life out of Romeo and Juliet we are going to be covering summaries of every single act the key quotes with analysis we will be going over the context that you need for your exam we will be going over past paper questions and how to plan and write a model answer and I will also be giving you guys my prediction of what may possibly come up this year so guys let's begin with Romeo and Juliet act one but before the act 1 scene one begins we have our lovely prologue where the chorus essentially tells us that guys hold your horses this is not a love story why this play is about star-crossed lovers now imagine this is Romeo and imagine this is Juliet and here are the stars and the stars are meeting now this is a star triangle this is not a star cross for this to cross they must meet and then they must separate therefore from the very beginning of the play Shakespeare makes it clear to us if you're expecting a story with a love video of the ending and a beautiful house with a nice picket fence and Mom and Dad get married with kids this is not the play for you Romeo and Juliet is about two people that fall in love who eventually meet but more importantly they pass never destined to be together that is late clay in the prologue from the very beginning of the text and act one then begins and act one scene one guy it begins with a brawl it begins with a fight you have the servants from the Capulet family which is the family that Juliet belongs to and you have the servants from the Montague family which is the family that Romeo belongs to and Guys these two families they Collide in the very beginning of the play days of fight and all hell breaks loose and essentially guys the prince tells them who he's the guy in charge of the Town of Verona he tells them guys if you do this again then I may have to punish you with death fight finishes guys but Shakespeare lays the president from the very beginning of the play that these two families Capulet and montagues do not like each other and they hate go so deep that even the servants don't like each other then we meet Romeo guys after the fight and Romeo being the strong masculine man that he is he says I don't want nothing to do with fighting my heart's broken and I'm in love I don't like Romeo I think guys Romeo I always say it Romeo is a wet wipe when you get a wet wipe and you scrunch into a bowl and you throw it against the wall it just slides down very slowly that's Romeo the entire plate the guy's got something wrong with him if he's not love sickness he's killed his wife's cousin and then he thinks his wife this guy's got issues man but but but but let's not digress so we'll talk about those issues as the video progresses anyway guys Romeo we learned in the first Act of the play that he is lovesick he is sad his heart is broken because a girl that he loved a girl named was the line unfortunately denied him the love and Romeo could not be with her and therefore guys Romeo is super sad and Romeo is really really upset so fast forward guys then we meet Capulet who is Julius dad and Julius dad is approached by Paris uh who is a fantastic Suitor and Paris essentially wants to marry Juliet Juliet is capulet's daughter Capital says look my daughter's too young wait for two more years and then we'll have a think about it and she must agree also but I've got a party I've got a ball at my house so do come down and maybe you can meet Juliet there and guys then fast forward all the way to the ball at the party Romeo sneaks into the party and tablet sees Romeo tibble is a Capilla and Romeo is a Montague and table sees Romeo in the party and table gets all hungry and he's like I'm gonna kill him I'm gonna kill him and Capulet stops him interesting point here by capillar stopping table he literally at that moment allows Romeo to meet Juliet which then results in whatever happens afterwards if Capulet had allowed tibol to do whatever he wanted to do at that moment in the play Romeo would never have got near Juliet so what might you all do here maybe the idea that sometimes you can't see not even the good in your actions but good comes back to haunt you that one action of calculator at that moment in the play it comes back to haunting for the entire Play From This Moment On but anyway guys Romeo at the party he meets Juliet and our God I'm getting hot just thinking about it I'm being sarcastic Romeo guys he missed you Juliet meets Romeo And The Exchange words and essentially guys they end up kissing they're strange isn't it last time I checked Romeo's lovesick because it was or Rosaline and Juliet well she says to her parents look I'm not even thinking about guys I'm not even thinking about marriage because as you know I'm an innocently alarm and I would never do such a thing but here they are lips touching kissing bit strange but we continue at the end of the ACT guys um Juliet learns that Romeo is from the Montague family and Romeo learns that Julia is from the Capulet family end of act one act two begins and now you would think you would think they're not gonna go there they're not gonna go where we think they're gonna go because surely their loyalty is to their family mom dad brothers sisters aunties uncles family name for hundreds of years they're not gonna sacrifice all of that for someone they just met never impossible but they do exactly that and what does Shakespeare show us guys Shakespeare shows us that their belief and the way these characters Act is just fake they pretend their family name means so much it meant nothing literally meant nothing Romeo and Juliet they bend their family names like that so act two guys is the famous balcony Scene It is the reason why in 2023 when people book venues when they book rooms and whatnot they book a balcony because the balcony screams romance so Romeo and Juliet guys act to the balcony scene Juliet is at the top of the balcony Romeo is at the bottom this is Juliet's house here's the balcony this is Romeo hanging around the house um and Juliet guys initially is on her own on the balcony and she's all sad and she's upset oh my Romeo why did you have to belong to the Montague family oh oh why oh why oh why super sad and Romeo comes out like the hero he is and he says to her look forget your family name I'll forget my family name let's be together now guys what is important on a serious note here is this Romeo begins to worship Juliet from the very beginning of the play he makes it clear that when it comes to hierarchy Juliet has more power but the power wasn't taken Romeo almost willingly gives up all his power the semantic field when it comes to idols and and religion and worship from Romeo to Juliet in this act is massive so do discuss that as to how Juliet has replaced all other idols and become Romeo's only Idol and this goes against patriarch okay this goes against patriarchy because this shows how these two characters are we're not these two characters how Romeo is a character as a man who has no power who have no strength love for Romeo is appears to be his weakness conventionally love is supposed to be a woman's weakness and I argue Romeo doesn't love Juliet Romeo loves the idea of love hence why he goes from Rosaline to Juliet literally within 24 hours now guys by the end of the balcony scene Romeo and Juliet they agree that look let's get married so the next day Romeo goes to visit Freya Lawrence and the friar is a bit surprised he's like oh you look really happy because he's seen Romeo upset about Rosalind and then he learns that Romeo is happy because he wants to marry a new girl and he's like ah really that quick but then he learns that she's Juliet and he thinks first he's against the idea but then trying to be the smart bum he decides to allow Romeo and Juliet to get married he and he agreed to conduct the wedding Because he believes that they they the union will bring the families together and that it definitely does and essentially guys at the end of Act 2 they are married done look at the pace of this play quick quick quick quick quick quick and you want to make a point that the structure of this play mimics the emotions at play the characters are so emotional it's as though before the emotions wear off Shakespeare wants to go through the motions and then guys we move on to act three and this is a pivotal this is an important act in the play probably the most important act Romeo and Juliet have just got married beautiful but literally hours later the world comes crashing down at three begins guys with a fight between the montagues and the cat foods specifically guys you had Tibet from the Capulet side and you had Mercutio from the Montague side and they engage in a battle and Romeo is there also and Romeo doesn't want to fight Roman doesn't want to fight because eventually guys he's related to both sides one through marriage one through blood and Romeo wants peace Roman is on a fight because Romeo is a lover not a fighter apparently that's what we think so guys as Miku show and uh tablet are fighting Romeo tries to intervene Romeo tries to break them apart but in that process tibble is able to deliver the Fatal blow to Mercutio and Mercutio dies Romeo feels absolutely guilty because he believes that it is his fault so he gets emotional he gets angry and he ends up killing tablet as you can see guys a common Trend Romeo acts On Emotion a lot once Romeo kills tablet Romeo Lexi Romeo is terrified Romeo likes it guys and Romeo runs and new spreads that Romeo has been banished from Verona meaning Romeo is never allowed to enter Verona but Romeo didn't even leave Rona it goes to Friar Lawrence afraid Lauren says to Romeo look before you leave you may as well spend your wedding night with your new wife Juliet so Romeo spends the night with Juliet in her room Romeo leaves and he leaves Rona get Mum comes in and she tells Juliet that her father has decided that Juliet is to marry Paris and Juliet says no and upon this Defiance guys Capulet goes mad Capulet can't handle it Capulet threatens to beat her Capulet threatens to drag her um and essentially Julia gets stuck now because she's married to Romeo her family want her to get married to Paris so who does she go to for help she in the beginning of act four she goes to Friar Lawrence for help and when she goes to fly fry learns for help ironically piracy is there trying to arrange his wedding with Juliet why is that irony guys because the fryer is the one that has already got Juliet married to Romeo anyway guys Paris leaves and the fryer comes up with a mastermind plan the fryer decides that Juliet look we are gonna fake your death we're gonna fake your death and you're gonna drink this poison they're gonna think you're dead when they lay you to be buried when they let you to rest Romeo will come and get you and you guys can live happily ever after so guys what does Juliet do Juliet goes home and while they are prepping for the wedding Julia goes home and while they are prepping for the wedding she knocks back the potion she knocks her out cold and when they find her they're so sad they're super upset because they can't believe that in the process of prepping for a wedding they are now prepping for a funeral because their beloved Juliet is dead ly a lamb who wouldn't hurt a fly has now successfully faked her death and she is dead and they take her to the place where all the capulets are buried Act five begins guys and Romeo's servant uh Balthazar goes to Mantra where Romeo is living and he tells wrong with the terrible news that Juliet is dead Romeo can't believe you what how dare this happen how did this happen my beloved wife no more Romeo decides that he is gonna go and lie with his wife his dead wife and he on the way buy some poison to kill himself because if she is a if she is dead then he might as well be dead as well because there is no point in living um so Romeo is heading towards where Juliet is the same time Friar Lawrence sends out a messenger to tell Romeo that the death is fake the death is not real but that messenger never reaches Romeo so it's a bit of a messy messy situation Juliet isn't dead she's faking her death the friar was supposed to tell Romeo that the death is fake but that news never reached Romeo Romeo thinks Julia is dead so Romeo buys poison planning on killing himself when he eventually ends up with his wife so guys Romeo finally reached his Juliet and when he gets there Paris is there morning morning sad sad sad sad sad Paris sees Romeo and Paris thinks that Romeo is here to cause trouble because Romeo just killed Julia's cousin so they fight guys they fight Romeo wins and he's there now with his wife Juliet and when Romeo sees Juliet guys he is heartbroken he's heartbroken first Rosalind didn't want him and now um Juliet is no more and then guys Romeo drinks his poison and he gives Julia a kiss and then he dies what a masculine way to die [Music] Romeo defies masculinity Romeo defies patriarchy Romeo defies every Convention of how a man is supposed to be that is why he is a wet wipe and then guys Juliet wakes up and Julius is Romeo and she can't believe that her husband is dead she can't kill herself with the poison guys because there's not enough left so she gives Romeo a kiss and then she stabs herself and then she also dies and then all the other characters come in the Capulet family comes in the monetary family comes in and they can't believe what's happened them their two children have died because of their family's Feud and I don't really agree with that analysis the children die because of their their obsession with love and lust and every emotion Under the Sun their children die because of their selfishness and they and they desire to please every desire that they have and they don't think about the consequences of the action but again that's an analysis that we can do later the play essentially ends guys with Capulet and Montague shaking hands and they agree that there is no Feud anymore and that is the story of Romeo and Juliet quick fast just like the relationship all based upon emotion go go go go go go no time to think no time to pause no time to even reflect on what is happening but it shows you guys from this play the danger of love the danger of family and the danger of taking humans as your idols so this play is a very strong play and that is the entire story of Romeo and Juliet all right guys now let's move on to analysis of some key codes all right guys now that we have been over the chapter by chapter summaries let's Now cover the key quotes of this particular text and we're only going to cover three but I'm gonna give you three that you can hopefully use in lots of different scenarios now this quote on your screen is one massive oxymoron and at the same time it is also foreshadowing so we have a language device in in the oxymoron and we have a structural device when it comes to the foreshadowing Violet Delights have violent ends what is this quote talking about now there are two even though the word violent has been used twice I would argue that it has two different meanings when we look at violence at the beginning we're talking about impulse we're looking at things that are done quickly things are done impulsively things that are done emotionally what are we talking about guys we are talking about how Romeo and Juliet when they get together in the beginning is done on pure emotion it's done on pure Imports it's done super super quick it's done super super fast so you can argue guys that this is the violent Delight that we speak about in the beginning of the text however the violent end guys this does not mean impact this does not mean emotion this does not mean quick and fast this is talking about death this is talking about destruction and this is talking about the end of a family name so you have in one quote Shakespeare has literally told us what the entire text is about he is telling us that those of you in particular Romeo and Juliet who do things based upon impulse and emotions and quick and fast you don't understand that the same violent beginning has a disgusting and violent end and a violent uh outcome now this quote is a very good quote guys when it comes to linking it to the idea of AO3 now AO3 is our context and the context that you guys should link this quote to is Freud and the ID now we're gonna go over context in a little bit more detail later but it's the idea here that as characters Romeo and Juliet are slaves to their desires they act on pure impulse they act on pure emotion they don't think about their families they don't think about other characters they don't think about the repercussions of what they're about to do everything is done at the click of a finger and that is where you can bring in Freud very nicely into this particular quote now guys let's move on love is and I've cut out the middle part um because I think it's too much to remember for an exam the only part that you need is love is everything except what it is this entire quote is juxtaposition at the same time we have personification so straight away guys we have a language and we have a structural device that we can talk about here so love is everything except what it is now what is the writer telling us about love in this part of the text God you want to make the point love as an emotion is extremely ambiguous love cannot be defined and that is very important because what love meant for Romeo may have not been what it meant for Juliet Romeo begins to worship her from the very beginning but even though love can mean different things for different characters here the writer gives the idea and the emotion of love a considerable amount of power if as though love is in control it's as though love is in charge but how is that possible it is definitely possible why because it is love that controls your emotion it is love that controlled your thought and for me guys this is a very nice way of looking at if we look at this part here first by the writer zooming in to just the idea of love it begins by putting love on a pedestal these characters are at the mercy of their emotion because their emotion is at the mercy of their love so because Romeo loves Juliet supposedly and because Juliet Romeo supposedly every action they do everything they do is at the mercy of this particular emotion they don't think things through but what do they fail to understand guys what do they fail to understand love is extremely deceptive but here guys it doesn't mean love is deceptive in an evil way it's almost telling a moral story love has its place in life love is one feeling that human beings feel but love by itself can control and can overtake a person that is why if all we live by is love then love will definitely be everything that we think it is not because we live in a world where we have other emotions to tackle we have other people to deal with Romeo can't just be with Julia Julia Khan just be with Romeo they have friends they have families they have a society that is holding them to account so guys this quote if I'm gonna summarize this quote in a nutshell it's the idea that love the way it's presented in the play is too good to be true it's just too good to be true you can't just meet and marry and go against your family and expect nothing to come back expect there to be no repercussions and that is what this quote is beautiful guys in showing so the first quote guy you can link it to Freud and the ID and the second quote I would do a genuine analysis of how this quote shows us that the way love is presenting the text is too good to be true and that is why ultimately this love cannot last and that is why we end with this particular quote guys star crossed lovers a very common quote very very common quote however this quote is fantastic why is this quote fantastic star crossed lovers okay this quote of course it's foreshadowing but what does this quote foreshadowing this quote for shadow is this quote foreshadows this and this quote foreshadowed this this one quote star-crossed lovers in foreshadows number one that Romeo and Juliet were never ever destined to be together even though they had a good time the end was supposed to be destructive because they were star Crossing lovers meaning they were never supposed to even be together in the long term so guys what is it foreshadow it foreshadows two things it foreshadows death remember separation and let's add a third one and if foreshadow the love is not meant to Lost always Picture This Love as a cross and that is a cross the cross when it meets in the middle it meets very briefly it meets for a very very very minute second or a minute what's that mean it means that their love was a violent Delight it means their love was quick it means their love was an Impulse it means their love was built on emotion however guys they were fooled because they gave all the importance to this poor here they gave all the importance to when they met never realizing that their love was not supposed to be their love was not supposed to last so this quote guys from the very beginning of the play it sets up the idea that these characters were doomed and I always say guys for me this quote it begs the question that Romeo and Juliet were seen as some kind of sacrifice they were not supposed to be together but they were brought together so they it's as though they were brought together not for their own good or for their own being for the sake of separation because their separation is what brings everybody else and every other family together so guys those are these three quotes discussed now let's look at some past contexts that we can apply to our text when it comes to Shakespeare guys the two contexts that I tend to focus on is Freud and the ID and patriarchy now let's go over Freud very clearly so guys Freud he oops guys Freud was somebody who wrote about the human brain and he said that the human brain has three parts the three parts of the human brain that he said that we have is the ID the ego and the superego now for the sake of our exam Let's ignore superego and Let's ignore ego and let's just focus on the it he said the eighth part of the brain is our Raw Instinct it is our raw desire now what does that mean every human being all of us myself and you guys watching this video we all have a Raw Instinct we all have raw desires now Freud focused heavily on two the two that he focused on was the Instinct of survival and the Instinct of worship now what does this mean guys survival is the idea nobody wants to die everyone wants to protect themselves You could argue when Romeo kills tibble that's him exercising his survival Instinct he felt threatened he felt weak so at that moment in time he fought back but I don't want to focus on the survival Instinct I want to focus on the Instinct of worship so you can argue that every character in this book is a Slave to their desire of worship why you can argue one hundred thousand percent that Romeo worships Juliet from the very beginning guys you guys know all the quotes there's so much reference to religion and worship in the balcony scene that Romeo most definitely worships Juliet he's replaced all Idols with Juliet he's defied every Star for Juliet so Romeo worships Juliet but I would argue Juliet doesn't worship Romeo I'm gonna argue that Juliet worships freedom as a woman living in a patriarchal society I'm going to argue that Romeo gives Juliet her first taste of Freedom her first inclination of what it means to be able to do what you want when you want with who you want so guys for your exam you can use this you can use the idea that Romeo and Juliet as characters these two in particular are slaves massive slaves slaves to their desires they do what they want they don't care about the consequences of their actions because they have become slaves today ID they have become slaves to the idea of worshiping but in this case Romeo worships Juliet and Juliet worships freedom but God you can apply it to lots and lots of different things you can argue capular worships reputation so you can broaden this and take it further and further and then we have patriarchy right then we have patriarchy and a typical argument guys when it comes to patriarchy and rightly so is the idea that patriarchy is when men are dominant men are dominant and as a result women are weak women are sexualized and women are objects for example Juliet belongs to Capulet and then upon marriage Juliet will belong to her husband she's like an object that's being sold that's how we see her marriage however patriarchy goals goes further than that I'm gonna argue and I'm gonna pose the argument that you want to argue that because of patriarchy men also have the possibility of being weak why simply because of expectations in a patriarchal society a man had to be strong Romeo had to kill in a patriarchal society a man had to be brave a man had to be masculine in the conventional sense therefore guys for Romeo the way he behaves the way he chases after Juliet the way he mops around and is lovesick for so much of the play as a character he goes against what a patriarchal man should be like so guys you can use that in your exam the patriarchy is a double-edged sword yes it gives men power but the expectation is so high that a lot of men cannot fulfill this expectation and these are the two pieces of context that you can use in your exam very very easily now guys we're going to look at how to use these quotes and we're going to look at how to use this context um in a second first things first guide we're going to now go over past paper questions and look at what's come up what may come up and then we're going to plan one response so guys in June 2017 the question that came up in the exam was looking at aggressive male Behavior move on to June 2018. in June 2018 guys the question that came up in the exam was about relationships between the adults and the young people so we've had aggressive male behavior and we have relationships between adults and young we've had two theme questions then we move on to June 2019. question looked at the question looked like guys the relationship between Romeo and Juliet so we have theme theme character then we move on to 2020 guys and the question this year looked at the conflict between the capulets and the Montague families so we had theme theme character character then guys we move on to 2021 and this was the culverdeath and for the first one we had explore how far Shakespeare presents Juliet as a female character with strong emotions so Julia as a female character with strong emotions and then we looked at Romeo's feelings towards Juliet so if you look at the past couple of years guys you've had how does Romeo feel towards Juliet Juliet as a female character you've had the families then you've had the relationship between Romeo and Juliet the relationship between The Young and the old and then you've had aggressive male Behavior because if I was going to be looking at what question you guys may get this year I reckon you're going to get a question around love and the idea of the positives or the negatives of love because they haven't outwardly surprisingly posed a question on love um in the exam so far and I don't think it'll be Howard Love presented I think it'll come loaded um it'll either look at love being a negative or love being a positive and ask you to explore that if I was predicting guys that's the kind of question that I reckon you guys will get now guys let's look at how you begin planning and working through an essay in the exam when it comes to Romeo and Juliet so you know that we are aiming to do four pretzel paragraphs pretzel guys stands for point it stands for reference it stands for technique it stands for explain the effect it stands for zooming in it stands for explain the effect and then you link everything back to the top in the exam guys we are aiming to do four paragraphs so paragraph one can be about the extract paragraph two can be about the whole text paragraph three can be about the extract and paragraph four can be about the whole text that is how we can divide our essay now what when do we do what you guys know this by now when it comes to ao1 ao2 and AO3 a01 is worth 12 marks and a01 Guy essentially looks at the quality of your point and the quality of your quote therefore guys what is ao1 a01 is your point and ao1 is your reference then guys if we look at ao2 ao2 looks at how well do you analyze the effect of what the effect of language devices the effect of structural devices and the effect of form so that essentially guys is your Technique your effect your zooming in and your effect so ao1 is worth 12 marks ao2 is worth 12 marks then you have one last piece which is AO3 and AO3 guys this is our context this is this is um patriarchy or it now AO3 is only worth six marks that's why we don't do AO3 in every single paragraph but if you do sorry when you do do AO3 where you include AO3 is in between your effect and in between you're zooming in but you only do it guys once or a maximum twice in your entire essay so how does an essay on Romeo and Juliet look like this is what an essay on Romeo and Juliet looks like in your exam in paragraph one I recommend that when it comes to your Technique you talk about a language technique and then when you zoom in you zoom into either a noun or a verb or adjective or adverb that is paragraph one done and that is based upon the extract then you move on to paragraph two and this is the whole text and this is where again when we pick out a Technique we pick out a language device and when we zoom in we zoom into an noun or verb adjective or adverb but in this paragraph guys after your first effect and before you zoom in this is where you include context either Freud or patriarchy you include it in this paragraph here now the reason we only talk about language in the first two paragraphs is because it is easier to talk about language ninety percent of students find it easier to talk about language but if there is a structural device that you really want to speak about then do it it doesn't it's not a it's not a rule that you're not allowed to it's just easier to speak about um language to get you going in your exam so guys that is why I advise that in the first two paragraphs for your techniques do language when you zoom in do nouns verbs adjectives and for your context discuss either Freud or patriarchy then we move on to paragraph number three and when it comes to our technique guys we talk about a structural technique this could be foreshadowing flashback this could be zooming in zooming out shifting Focus you decide what you want to pick but this could be any structural technique and easy quote would be guys Star Cross lovers and you can use it as foreshadowing if it fits and then guys when it comes to the form this is where you discuss what is the effect of Romeo and Juliet being a play because that is why it is right it's a play so you might talk about stage directions you might talk about the pace of the play and how because it's a play the events move really really fast maybe violent Delights maybe the maybe the Delights are so violent because it's a play and then guys in the last paragraph Because by the time we get to the last paragraph because we've now done form structured language context we've now done ao1 a02 and AO3 in your last paragraph you can essentially pick whatever you want it could be any device it could be structure it could be language it could be a formal game if you want to and this should you wish to do context twice this is the second time that you bring context in to your exam and guys this is the overall layout of a uh essay on Romeo and Juliet all you do is you fill it in um with the answers based upon a past paper question and guys just a point I want to make if you want to do whole Tech oops if you want to do guys whole text first and then extract that's fine as well as long as by the end of your essay you have two paragraphs that are focusing on the extract and two paragraphs that are focusing on the whole text and if you are able to produce four very good paragraphs you can most definitely get a grade nine so guys I hope you find this video beneficial when we went over the key chapters we went over the key quotes the context past paper questions my prediction and looking at how you plan and write an essay on Romeo and Juliet as always guys it's been Mr everything
