Base Umpire Positioning: B Position

Definition of B Position

  • Location:
    • Two to three steps to the left of the second baseman.
    • Two to three steps to the rear of the second baseman's normal position.
  • Distance:
    • Approximately 25 to 30 feet from either first base or second base.

Purpose of Positioning

  • Objective:
    • Provides a good angle and position to make calls at first or second base.
  • Condition:
    • Used when there is a runner at first base.

Responsibilities of the Base Umpire

  • Observations:
    • Watching the pitcher.
    • Assisting his partner.
    • Monitoring the runner for leaving the base early.
  • Positioning Considerations:
    • Avoid crowding in to maintain a clear view of the runner on first base.
    • Must adjust positioning to focus on home plate while being able to see the runner at first if they leave early.

Summary

The B position is strategically designed for optimal viewing and decision-making, especially when there is a runner on first base, ensuring the base umpire can effectively manage and observe game dynamics.
