Macbeth Summary and Key Concepts

guys welcome to another video you've got Mr Everything English today we will be going over probably the most taught text in the entire country and that is McBeth by William Shakespeare everything education tuition for maths English and Science in this video guys I'm going to cover the entire play what happens what is it about just so you have a clear understanding of this text now the play begins guys in act one and we meet the three beautiful I'm joking guys the three ugly witches and these three witches they meet in terrible conditions and this is where the pathetic fallacy is used to emphasize what kind of characters we're dealing with and these witches are talking about their plans for the future and they tell the audience how they will meet again and when they meet again on a upon a heath upon a field that they will be looking to meet McBeth and this shows us guys from the very beginning of the play that they have targeted McBeth as their next victim and just before act one scene one ends they talk about how faar is foul and foul is fair and over through the fog and filthy a fair is foul and foul is fair over through the fog and filthy air and this tells us from the very beginning of the play that the witches are warning the audience that what you think is fair what you think is good we think is foul we think is bad and our beliefs are going to hover are going to spread across the air meaning we're going to corrupt everyone in this play and that happens in act 1 scene 1 and then guys in act 1 scene 2 we are introduced to McBeth and we are told that this guy is brave MCB he is the best soldier the best General that the King has and he is ABS and it's in the middle of a battle guys it's the Scottish army versus the Norwegian Army and McBeth is on the side of the Scottish people because he is fighting for King Duncan and guys he is chopping up the enemy on the battlefield he's carving the passage and we learned that because of McBeth they have won the battle then we move on to act one scene 3 and McBeth and his sidekick his best friend Bano are walking home from the battle and as they're walking home they meet the witches and the witches are absolutely gas to meet MCB best this is what they've been planning this is what they've been waiting for and when they meet McBeth guys they tell McBeth some prophecies prophecies are predictions of the future the first thing that they tell McBeth and this isn't a prophecy is that you are or you will be the thing of Glamis which he currently is then they give two prophecies the first one is that you will be the thing of cordal and this this is a title and this is quite a high title for McBeth that's the first one which is quite believable it's not out of the ordinary and then they they tell McBeth something that completely blows him away they tell McBeth that you will be the king yes hell yeah and this is crazy for MB because King Duncan currently has two sons malol and doain so when the King dies the son next in line is Malcolm so MCB thinking I can't be the king because for me to be the king the king's got a go then the two sons got a go then I can be the king so this is crazy for mbth but very early on McBeth is is wrapped McBeth is interested in what the witches are telling him so we learned that this guy has signs of wanting this to come true then guys The Witches tell Bano mcb's sidekick mcb's friend that you will not be a king but your children will be Kings and at that point The Witches vanish then guys as the play develops the king had sent two Messengers Ross and Angus to tell McBeth that listen McBeth there's been a change the current thing of cordor betrayed me in the battlefield so their punishment for betraying the King was execution so because we're going to get rid of the current thing of cordor you are now getting a promotion you are now the new thing of cordor and McBeth can't believe it because the witches just told him that he's going to be the thing of cordor and then the moment they leave the king's Messengers arrive and they tell McBeth that he is the thing of Cordo and he can't believe it he's thinking damn these women might actually just be telling me the truth then he gets all excited and he writes a letter to his beautiful wife I don't know why I keep calling everyone beautiful but it is what it is he writes a letter to his wife guys lady mcth in act 1 5 and in act 1 5 the scene begins with Lady McBeth reading mcbeth's letter and this is important guys because in this letter McBeth tells his wife everything he doesn't hide anything he tells her that look my lovely wife I met the three witches and the three witches told me that I'm going to be the king and he tells her you're going to be great if I'm great you're going to be great he's getting his wife ready because he understands that for me to be the king I need her on side this is an important point because you want to understand one thing it's McBeth who influences her first to want to become the queen and for him to become the king now after she's read the letter she's excited she can't believe it you're going to be the king if you're going to be the king I'm going to be the queen but she has some concerns she has some reservations because she's that look McBeth well she's talking to the audience talking to herself but mcb's not there but she says look my lovely husband I get it that's the prophecy but you're too kind you're too nice which shows us that she understands from the very beginning for McBeth to become the king he's got to do some crazy things so she says look you're too kind and for you to become the king I need to make sure that I poison your mind and this comes through guys in the quote where she says I'm going to chastise you with the Valor of my tongue meaning I'm going to control you with The Bravery of my speech so we understand that lady McBeth understands that she must change McBeth to make him become the king but she's not too crazy but then a messenger walks in and the messenger tells her that listen lady mbth I've got some news for you King Duncan is traveling and he's going to stop at this castle at our Castle tonight for one night and this gets her going crazy because she's thinking hold on McBeth can be the king Duncan who is the king is coming to our house our castle for one night I got one chance to kill the king and that's two night and she goes crazy guys and this is where she goes on stage and she begs the spirits unsex me here which means take away all my feminine qualities and make me evil to the core now that happens guys and then she then McBeth comes back home and McBeth tells his wife look um hello how are you how's it going he doesn't tell his wife that but guys MC comes back home and she tells McBeth that look leave it to me all I need you to do is listen to what I say and be TW faced look like a flower is what she says look the innocent flower but be the serpent meaning make sure nobody understands or nobody clocks on to our plan of killing the King now guys act 1 scene 7 rolls around and in act 1 SC 7 McBeth been thinking about it and McBeth says to his wife listen listen listen listen I can't do this I'm not going to kill the king he's he's torn between the two and he says to his wife I'm not going to kill the king and she turns to him and says what are you are you a coward were you drunk in the morning are you feeling okay you think you're going to tell me what to do there's a twisting of gender Norms gender roles but she says to him essentially if you don't kill the king you're not a man for me and this gets mcbess all he gets butur oh you question my masculinity I'll do whatever it takes to be a man so he says all fine I'll do it now guys look at this point I'm not convinced that he's killing king Duncan just because his wife threatened his masculinity he always wanted to do it she just lit the fire that created the Flames for his um killing of the king so guys by the end of act one McBeth goes from fighting for the king to deciding that he's going to kill the king then act 2 scene one begins and in act 2 scene one guys McBeth is by himself and McBeth talks about his heat oppressed brain basically he's he's all alone and he's feeling a little bit confused he's like I feel as though what I'm about to do isn't correct and he begins to hallucinate and he sees a dagger and the dagger is a symbol of death and when MCB sees the dagger guys he sees sees it as a sign of him killing Duncan so he at the end of act two scene one he walks off and he goes to kill Duncan now Duncan is killed off stage not on stage and the reason Duncan is killed off stage is because you couldn't kill the King on stage because the King was seen as God's man on Earth so it went against their beliefs it went against their religious beliefs so the king never dies on stage but in Act 2 scene one it ends with McBeth going off to kill the king in act two scene 2 he comes back having killed the king and he goes to his wife and he brings the daggers back and she's like you stupid man you were supposed to leave the daggers there let me go do it she goes she leaves the daggers there so she also now has blood on her hands that's important because of how she feels in Act five anyway guys they've killed the king now and they're trying to cover up what they they've done the next day or or that morning if you like when everyone wakes up they're like oh my God the King's dead the King's dead Ring the Alarm Bells we can't believe what's happened McBeth um is pretending lady McBeth is pretending that this is the worst thing to ever happen and then guys the king's two son Malcolm and Dolan ban they decide that look we got to leave the reason we got to leave is because we believe our dad was murdered and we believe that the murderer is at large so before he comes to kill us let's play so the king's two sons who were the next in line they they disappear so the King's dead malol and Don ban who were the ear to the throne they leave one goes to Ireland one goes to England and that leaves McBeth so in act 3 scene one McBeth and Lady McBeth are crowned as king and queen however the play does not end here because guys the law of gravity is what goes up must come down so in act 3 scene 1 McBeth is now the king and Lady McBeth is now the queen and they've got one problem and that problem is Bano why Bango suspects that McBeth did something bad to become the king he says in act 3 scene one that that I suspect that thou plays most fly for it meaning basically you're the king but I think you did some crazy stuff to become the king he's the main character who suspects McBeth and why does he suspect McBeth because he was there in the prophecies he heard the witches tell him all that stuff so guys what does banko do well doesn't me do anything B just carries on um mouth shut doesn't say anything to anyone but McBeth guys being the king McBeth understands that if he needs to secure his throne he's got to kill Bangor because Banquo is a threat in two ways number one he heard the prophecies but number two the prophecies for Bano were you won't be king but your kids will be king So McBeth thinking this guy's children are going to be a threat to me so guys McBeth gets hold of some murderers and he sends the murderers and the murderers kill banko but Bank son fleance he survives and fleance is the walking talking prophecy by fleance being alive the prophecy of bangpo is alive so McBeth is still going crazy so when the murderers come back at that point McBeth was having a feast a banquet to celebrate him becoming the king and the murderer say look come here come here come here I got tasing and bestla what's up he tells him that look we kill Bango and M say beautiful well done but Fons got away and when McBeth hears this guys McBeth starts to go a bit crazy McBeth starts to hallucinate and he sees the ghost of Banquo at the banquet and all the other guests that are there they're thinking what the heck this is a king why is a king be why is a king behaving like this lady McBeth tries to cover up for him but ultimately she ends the banquet and says look everyone go home the king is not feeling well and obviously they're going to start suspecting that there's something wrong with him then guys in act four what time is it not bad 13 minutes not bad guys in act four McBeth is now the king remember this the last time he met the witches he was a soldier now he's the king McBeth like a beggar with a becking Bowl he goes to visit the witches in act one scene three they came to him in act four he goes to them and he goes to the witches basically saying look tell me more like what's going to happen and then they give him the next set of prophecies and they say to him that McBeth no man born of a woman can harm you now unless you've been living under some crazy tree we all know that people are born from women so because McBeth hears that because McBeth says no man born of a woman can harm me he thinks I am untouchable I am absolutely Untouchable that's the first prophecy but then the witches being the beautiful witches they are why did I call them that it's done now the witches being the witches um they then confuse MC breath because they say no man born of a woman can harm you but the second prophecy is bew of MDU so he's thinking hold on a second no man can harmm me but you're telling me to be careful of MD I'm a little bit confused and then the third prophecy guys is they tell McBeth that until Burnham W which is the forest in front of his castle until Burnham would comes to Dain you're going to be fine nobody can touch you so he's thinking look there's no way the forest is coming to my house cuz trees can't walk and everyone's born of a woman so no man can harm me so he believes he's Untouchable but just to be on the safe side again he hires murderers to go and kill mdda and mcduff's family so then the murderers they go to McD's family and they kill mcduff's wife and they killed MD's child but mdda isn't there because mdda is in England um getting ready with the Army to come and fight McBeth because they all believe that McBeth was the one that killed Duncan now at this point you got to pause guys McBeth was the same man who was hesitant to kill the king but he did it anyway McBeth then went to to kill bankor then he killed a woman and a child this shows us guys mbth is a play that shows us that when you Embark upon evil evil has no end your desires have no end as a man we are never happy because the more we do and the more we want and the more we get the more we want and the more we do and the more we get because there's a never ending Pursuit so guys act four he visits the witches they gets all the prophecies we shift to England and we see how the armies so Malcolm Donan when they left they left to England and Ireland and now they're forming armies because they want to come back to fight McBeth to get back the throne the rightful throne and mcdu is a part of that Army then guys act five we meet lady MCB and Lady mcre gone a bit Dali she's gone a bit crazy and we see her at night and we see a her her her servant and a doctor watching her and we realize that lady McBeth is sleepwalking and while she's sleepwalking she's washing her hands she's wiping her hands because she feels as though she has blood on her hands this is a sign of her guilt this is a sign of everything she feels but basically guys this is the end of Lady McBeth the guilt has got too much anyway guys as Act five develops McBeth getting reports that look the armies of Malcolm and Doan are closing in on the castle and MCB like it's cool it's cool it's cool because he believes that he's Untouchable then guys McBeth gets some reports and he gets reports that number one lady McBeth is dead lady McBeth has committed suicide and that the woods Dan name are moving because what the soldiers do is the soldiers they chop the trees the branches and they put the tree branches in front of them to almost distract them or make it harder for The Archers to shoot arrows at them so burnam wood is now moving towards D name prophecy number three destroyed at the same time guys McBeth is told that lady McBeth is dead I believe this was act 5 scene 5 guys act 5 scene 5 you can check it for me and he says in there that look life is a brief candle meaning life is really short and at this point in the play guys we see a different side of McBeth it's as though when lady McBeth dies like like like like a knot in his brain is almost opened up like a spell is is is is is is is gone because the moment she dies he thinks about life like life is so short and what have I been doing all this time and for a slight second he shows some regret but it's too late at that point it's too late because that regret comes for a second but then it goes away because the armies enter the castle but that's important guys because if you ever get a question of McBeth I argue that McBeth almost goes full circle he starts as a good guy fighting for the king loyal to the coure then he gets corrupted and does what he does but at the end he has some sign of a human side some sign of regret but it's too late the armies are here McAn fights the enemy he comes across MD MB says to MDU you can't touch me because no man born of a woman can harm me mdda says haahahaha I was ripped out of my mother's womb um I was born untimely meaning he wasn't born in the normal way he was um he was ripped out of his mother's stomach so the first prophecy is now destroyed because mdda was not technically born of a woman so the trees have moved mdda was born in an unnatural way and then the second prophet was beware of McDuff and McDuff guys beats MC Beth chops his head off in the battle and that is the end of that Malcolm then becomes the king and the rightful a to the throne is crowned now in Act One banko says to the audience the instruments of Darkness tell us truths only to betray Us in deepest consequence and this entire play can be summarized by that one quote how the instruments of Darkness he's talking about the witches and instruments is something you play so he says the instruments of Darkness those that play with Darkness those that play with evil they tell you some truths now what were his some truths you're going to be king and you're going to be cordor why because they pull you in they get you on side and once you've got them on once they've got you on their side they will betray you and they betray McBeth with the second set of prophecies about burnam wood and about no man being born of a woman because they play with him because they make him believe he's Untouchable so they then what they what did they do with the second prophecies they betrayed him with the deepest consequence what was the Deep consequence it was the death of McBeth it was his life guys McBeth called me a geek but McBeth is a fantastic play it really is and in this video guys I try to summarize all or everything that you need I didn't go over language or structure or form on purpose this isn't that video this is the video guys where if you're not sure what mbth is about hopefully by the end of this video you know the entire PL from act one to act 5 Guys maybe
