Anatomy and Function of the Clavicle

Introduction

  • Presented by Matt from Kenhub.
  • Focus on the anatomy, definition, and function of the clavicle.

Clavicle Overview

  • Also known as the collar bone.
  • Curvy bone located at the base of the neck.
  • Classified as a long bone but relatively short.

Location

  • Runs from the sternum at the medial line to the acromion of the scapula.
  • Present on both sides of the sternum.

Landmarks

  • Inferior surface contains landmarks where ligaments attach:
    • Conoid Tubercle: Near the acromial end.
    • Trapezoid Line: Also located on the acromial end.
    • Impression for the Costoclavicular Ligament: Found on the sternal end.
  • Names of bony prominences correspond to the ligaments attaching at those points.

Functions

  • Attaches arms to the trunk.
  • Protects neurovascular structures supplying the arm.
  • Transfers force from the upper limb to the axial skeleton.

Palpation and Visibility

  • Easily palpable due to its proximity to the body's surface.
  • Visible in some individuals.

Clinical Note

  • Most commonly fractured bone in the body.
  • Functions as a stress absorber due to location and role.

Closing Remarks

  • Kenhub offers more engaging learning tools than traditional textbooks.
  • Additional resources available: videos, quizzes, articles, and an anatomy atlas.
  • Encouragement to explore Kenhub for enhanced anatomy learning.
