Fundamentals of Fielding Ground Balls

hey everyone i'm megan remblack and welcome to my channel magram softball in this video i'm going to show three different drills that you can do to work on the proper footwork when fielding a ground ball this is going to be geared more for beginners for those who are still trying to figure out their footwork body positioning when they're fielding a ground ball so they are going to be very basic drills but they're going to be drills where it's a little bit interactive they're moving a lot where they're going to be engaged but at the same time still working on the fundamentals so before we start let's just go over quickly again how we want to field a ground ball so i'm a righty my footwork up to a ball is right left field right left throw and when i go down to feel that ground ball my pocket and my web is nice and open i've got my fingertips down my palm is open to the ball my chest is down and my back is flat so this is how i'll look when i feel the ground ball my throwing hand is going to be right next to my glove in case that ball pops in and wants to pop out i see i can secure it and then also too so i can have a quicker transfer when i come up to throw so to start i've got five cones you can do as many as you want but for right now i'm just doing five and i've got a stationary ball you're gonna go up to each ball just working on the proper footwork so i'm going up to each ball going right left here you can make it fun to where you can have a girl start at every cone coach can say go they go up to it then coach can say go again and then they go up to the next one so the girls are kind of zigzagging to each ball so no one's standing around so how it will look is i'm coming up to the ball it's right left field i'm nice and wide in my legs i like to have my feet a little bit wider than my shoulders so i have a strong bottom half so i'm going to pause for two seconds and then i'm coming up to the next one right left pause and then i'm going to turn around keeping that zigzag pattern i'm turning around and i'm going right left heel and i'm coming up to this one right left field then going to this one right left field i like the zigzag um changing directions because again when you're working with younger girls um it's just fun to kind of change directions they know they have to go in a certain pattern and again you can set a girl up at each cone tell them to go pause tell them to go again and they just keep rotating in and out or you could do one at a time once the girl gets to the second ball have the teammate go right after her for this next drill it's going to incorporate some stutter steps some pauses before they actually feel that ground ball so to make this a little bit more interactive for the girls if they are righty you're going to have them shake their right foot okay and the reason for that some younger girls don't know the difference between right or left uh some do but still when they're kind of going full speed they forget if you haven't shake their leg before telling them hey your right foot that you're shaking right now that's the foot that's going to go down first before you field it's easier for them to understand so for this drill you're going to have two cones in a line you're going to start all the way back the girls are coming up to this first cone before you even start to roll that ball tell them hey shake your right foot for my lefties they'll shake their left foot because it's left right field left right throw so have them shake their leg tell them go they're going to the first cone and they're stutter stepping we want their feet to be in constant motion so they get the idea of eventually working through the ball in field or speed always stay moving so there's stutter stepping coach is going to yell go they'll go up to the next one stutter step girl's not going to field the ball until coach rolls it once he or she rolls it they'll field it and then throw you can have instead of having one girl at a time when your first girl gets to this cone and you say go she goes up to this next one have the teammate go to that first cone so now you have two girls in a line stutter stepping one coats rolls it this one will field and throw while this next one comes to that first cone so again keep it to where the girls are in constant motion they're shaking their right leg before they field it if you have girls are still uncomfortable with going full speed once they go to field it have them freeze right left field if it looks good coach can say go they'll pick it up right left throw so this last drill is going to focus on timing we're going to work on timing but we're still going to try and do our best to keep it very basic so when we feel the ground ball again i'm a righty i go up to with my right foot once my left foot hits is when that ball should be hitting my glove so when my left heel strikes the ground is when i want to pick that ball up and throw it so and for this drill i'm in order to get that muscle memory down we're going to do this drill three times in a row and how they're going to start they're going to be balancing on their right legs if they're righty they're a lefty they'll be bouncing on their left leg so for me i'm a righty i'm bouncing on my right leg coach is going to roll me a ball once that ball hits right before my glove or right here i'm going to be putting my left heel down coming up like i'm going to throw and then i'm setting up again field up field up okay and i want to do that three times in a row just to keep them thinking um keep them engaged once they get very comfortable with it go ahead and add the throw so they'll be here they're gonna wait wait wait ball's rolling their gloves pick it up throw again throw and then last one field throw [Music] bye
