How to Change Your Instagram Username and Display Name

Overview

  • Instagram allows users to change their display name and username freely.
  • Display name: Appears below profile icon and can include emojis or special characters.
  • Username: Unique handle at the top of profile, limited to 30 characters, only letters, periods, numbers, underscores allowed.

Changing Display Name

  1. Open Instagram App

    • Available on iPhone and Android.
  2. Access Profile

    • Tap "Profile" icon at bottom-right.
  3. Edit Profile

    • Tap "Edit Profile."
  4. Change Name

    • Tap text box next to "Name."
    • Enter new display name.
    • Tap checkmark to confirm.

Changing Username

  1. Open Instagram App

    • Available on iPhone and Android.
  2. Access Profile

    • Tap "Profile" icon at bottom-right.
  3. Edit Profile

    • Tap "Edit Profile."
  4. Change Username

    • Tap text box next to "Username."
    • Enter new username (must be unique).
    • Tap checkmark to confirm.
  5. If Username Unavailable

    • Try adding a period or underscore, or choose another name.
  6. Reverting to Old Username

    • Previous username saved for 14 days, can be reclaimed if no one else has taken it.
