Measuring Distance on OS Maps
Key Concept
- Grid Square Distance: Any distance across a grid square on an OS map is always 1 kilometer. This holds true regardless of the apparent size of the grid square.
Measuring Straight Line Distance (As the Crow Flies)
- Identify the two points (e.g., between two pubs).
- Use a piece of paper:
- Align the paper from one point directly to the other.
- Mark the start and end points on the paper.
- Measure the marked distance using the map's scale:
- Example: If the distance is marked as 1.9 kilometers on the scale.
Measuring Driving Distance (Following the Road)
- Use the same piece of paper:
- Follow the road on the map by aligning the edge of the paper with the path.
- Use a pencil to hold and adjust the paper at bends or corners.
- Align the paper continuously:
- At each turn or bend, adjust the paper to maintain alignment with the road.
- Pay extra attention at large turns or corners for more precision.
- Measure the total path:
- Once the entire path is marked, use the map's scale to measure the distance.
- Example: The total measured driving distance is 2.55 kilometers.
Summary
- Direct Flight Distance: 1.9 kilometers
- Driving Distance: 2.55 kilometers
Understanding both methods allows for an accurate representation of distance whether calculating direct travel or following pathways like roads.
