Laser Engraving White Tiles Tutorial

What's up guys? I'm Nick and this is Build Dad Build and on this episode Everybody dies! Kidding, kidding, kidding. I keyed, I keyed.

Everybody gets a laser. Okay, once again, kidding. Everybody does not get a laser. Let's talk about the indelible white tile method. This is a way to laser engrave a white tile with an image that will not scrape off or anything.

It's permanent once you get done with it. I've outlined this process in another video. We're using my Auteur Laser Master 2 Pro.

I will link that right here. But in this video, I'll show you how to do the same thing with the D1 in Laserbox Basic. All right, the first thing you want to do is run down to the deepers. That's right, the deepers.

And pick you up some Rust-Oleum 2x Ultra Cover. This is heirloom white. There is like the white whale of colors. I can't remember what it's called, but nobody can find it anywhere.

And I've seen posted on other websites, it has to do with like the zinc content in this paint. But I'm telling you, get the heirloom white in the satin variety because I know this one works. Feel free to experiment with other colors once you get your technique down.

And while you're at the deepers, go next door to the Lowe's and pick you up some 4x4 white tile. Just like your cheap ceramic. tiles.

Nothing, you know, they're shiny, nothing special about these. Once One of Lowe's runs a deal on these, I think I picked up two boxes for like 12 cents a tile or something. And the third thing you need, and probably not this much of it, is some lacquer thinner or something else to clean the tiles off with.

You want to make sure that there's no fingerprints, no oil or anything. There's kind of a little bit of a waxy layer that's on them. Sometimes you want to take that off as well. The reason I like to use lacquer thinner is because it evaporates very quickly, but...

use what you got. Okay, so I've grabbed about 10 tiles. Usually when I do this about that, I want to get a bunch of tiles ready and prepped because the prep is what takes the longest.

We're going to clean them, spray paint them, and then we got to wait till they dry before we can start this process. I've heard people say that they wait overnight. I usually wait an hour.

Okay, we take our Macca Center, give it a good sniff. And then we take our shop rag, aka one of my old shirts cut up. and you're literally just going to wipe down the top. We're going to do a test grid on one of these, and then we'll dial in our settings from there.

Like I said, this is a pretty quick process, and these should be dry by the time I get them out back to spray paint them. All right, so prep is almost as important as your settings. What you want to do is just a thin coat each way once.

You don't want to have too much... paint on your tile or it won't work it'll chip off so you just want to start over here and then you're going to go the other way we're drying we're going to come in here to the laser box i'm going to open up my menu here and i'm going to import a test tile burn it's hiding from me this did come from the x tool d1 facebook group which i'll link down below but I did change this up a little bit because the speed and stuff was on the side and it just it didn't look right to me Also, I I flip part of this and for some reason these are 89 degrees rotated instead of 90 So if you look at them, they're all a little bit screwy I'll have to come in here and redo this at a later time. This will be available in my Google Drive I'll link that down below when I update it.

I will put the updated one in my Google Drive as well But basically if you click on these individual squares, you'll see that this one is 10% power and it's 18 millimeters per second and then if you click on this one this one's 100 power 180 millimeters per second so and then this is everything in between so we're going to get a nice kind of gradient burn here and this will give us an idea of best settings for our tile now i've already done it with this one but you just want to resize this our tiles are four inch by four inch which is about 100 millimeters by 100 millimeters i always make it a little bit smaller i'll come in here and make this 95 And I make it 95 just because I like to have a little bit of an edge around the tile. So now we're just going to take this down to the shop and we're going to burn it, baby. We're going to burn it down.

Okay, so now we're down here in the laser bed. Go ahead and line this guy up. Focus this all the way up to the corner.

And then we're going to run a frame and see. How close we are. All right, we should be good.

What's up guys? I just want to stop in here with this sealed bottle of liquor just to let you know that there's a sale going on. If you're watching this video between April 2nd and April 17th, Xtool is having a spring sale. I will link it down below. Go check out the deep, deep discounts.

Now. Okay, so not the prettiest test tile ever. I might have to go in and make my own just to make sure that something's not off on that. All right, so now what you want to do is you want to come in and you're going to take the paint off because what we want to see is what it's going to look like after you remove that top layer of paint and what we're looking at afterwards because that's where we're going to get our settings.

Okay, so we don't want to go so black that it's going to be crazy. So we want to look kind of more in this area right here. I'm thinking we're going to start out with 70% power, 72 millimeters a second, and see how that works.

You guys see that? Like I said, it's a little screwy. It may have gotten bumped. I don't know why my numbers are off. The gantry may be a little loose.

I need to check that. But I think we're looking like right in here for our best settings. I wanted to introduce you to Imgur. This is a free website which will help you prep your images for doing this method on tile. All right, so you're going to scroll down.

You're going to look for upload. We're just going to grab this guy we have our moon night picture right here and we're gonna pull it in okay there we go okay so there is our image next thing we want to do is we're going to crop you're going to come down here we want to do a square crop and we don't want to cut his head off so we're going to bring this up and just kind of get it where we want it right about there looks good and then we're going to come down and crop crop this weenie i cropped this ween All right, so now we are cropped. We are going to resize. We're going to come in here and we are going to go by inches and we're going to go four.

Boop. And we're going to keep our DPI at 300. Some people play with this to get the best image. Also, guys, just so you know, when you're doing an image and it's coming out poorly, sometimes it can just be the image itself.

being not high quality. Like if you just grab something off the internet, you need to make sure that it's a good quality picture first. Okay, now next you can add text if you want to.

We're not going to on this one. Material, we're going to come in here. We're doing the Norton white tile. It's converting and you'll see what it does. And that's not exactly what it's going to look like, but it's close.

So if you preview with material, there we go. Okay, so this is what your image should look like on the tile That's just kind of kind of give you an idea and at this point your tile is ready to go so you just hit download I usually do PNGs and We'll pull it down right here. And then we'll just take it down and put it in the laser. All right We're gonna load in another tile straight Turn the laser on Right on the corner 70% power 72 millimeters per second to run a frame Okay, so in the beginning you're gonna have a little bit of trial and error while you dial your settings in, but keep track of your settings because once you get this down, as long as you're always prepping your tiles right, you should be able to use the same settings and not burn through so many tiles.

Alright, second draft here. I'm, uh... I'm a little bit more confident on this one than the first one. So once you're finished with the laser, you still got to take the excess paint off.

Oh yeah, I'm liking this. I like it. A little bit of banding going on.

Banding can come from a lot of things. More than likely I have a loose belt someplace. Check that out. Alright so it looks like we took care of our banding issue so let's clean this one up and see what we think.

Yes! Look at that one. Slick.

I dig it. Hmm I wonder... Okay, I was hoping to get some speed out of the Enduramark, but I didn't really get too much of a speed gain using the same settings for both the paint and the Enduramark. But, check this out.

Look at the detail in that. It is crazy! So, I'm going to let you guys decide. Which one do you think looks better? Which one?

I'm not going to tell you which one it is. Put it in the comments right now. Do you like left or right better? Okay, now that you've done that, this is the Enduramark.

So if you said this one, then you need to get you some Enduramark. I will leave a promo code for 15% off down below. Either one of these is acceptable.

Man, I'm like, I just, it just looks better. Looks just a little better. So final settings with 90% power, 45 millimeters per second on both. Mind you that at that speed and that rate on a four inch tile, you're looking at about 60 to 70 minutes of tile. So it's nice to have that going while you're doing something else.

Like I will be editing this video while I'm burning a couple more tiles. And then from there, you're just going to want to tweak. your settings so keep in mind also that the enduramark when you spray that on it's ready to go in about five minutes and it washes off with water as opposed to taking off with lacquer thinner so while the actual burn time is the same for both products you're saving a ton of time in your prep and your cleanup and come on i mean to me if you're gonna sell tiles or like portrait type stuff you can't beat that dude that's amazing all right guys i hope this was helpful Make sure to check out that spring sale if it's springtime when you're watching this. And until next time, it's not sealed anymore.

Thanks for playing X-Tool Ho! My kids have been watching Thundercats, like the old, that old version, that new version, did you know that? Because what we're going to do is we're going to spray paint the tiles, we're going to let them dry. We are going to or wax or anything like that. Any, uh, Any of the jisms, you don't want any of the jisms on there, that's bad.

She's just walking around jumping on her own ass. Oh, that's quick, Gordon. Cool.

Oh, look, a little bit.
