Procedure for Administering IV Fluids Using a Three-Way Tap

Clean your tray as normal. Collect a 500 ml bag of 0.9 saline, an IV giving set, a three way tap and a 60 ml IV luer lock syringe. Open all of your equipment and place in the tray. Take your bag of saline and open, clamp your giving set remove the lid and spike the bag of fluid. Hang your bag of fluid. Squeeze the drip chamber until it's at least halfway, connect the giving set to the 3-way tap and connect the syringe to the top of the three way tap. Turn on to the fluid bag and the syringe and off to the patient. Ensure all clamps are open, unclamp the fluid and pull back on the syringe. Hold upright and get rid of the air. Turn the three-way tap onto the patient, do not attach to the patient and expel the air. Take the fluid to your patient clean the cannula as per Trust guidelines, attach the three-way tap to the cannula and give the volume of fluid required to your patient, for example a hundred mls, unclamp the cannula administer the first 50 mls. Turn the three-way tap onto the bag of fluid and the syringe and off to the patient, withdraw another 50 mls of fluid. Turn the three-way tap on to your patient and onto the syringe and off to your IV fluid bag and administer the next 50 mls. Clamp the cannula and turn the 3 way tap diagonally so that it is off to all three points of access.
