Overview
U.S. Northern Command has activated a Marine infantry battalion to support Task Force 51 in protecting federal personnel and property in the Los Angeles area, providing additional manpower and capabilities for Homeland Defense and Security Operations.
Activation of Marine Infantry Battalion
- USNORTHCOM activated 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, placing approximately 700 Marines in the Los Angeles area.
- These Marines will integrate with existing Title 10 forces under Task Force 51.
Role and Composition of Task Force 51
- Task Force 51 is a contingency command post of U.S. Army North, commanded by Maj. Gen. Scott M. Sherman.
- It comprises about 2,100 National Guard soldiers (Title 10 status) and 700 active-duty Marines.
- The task force is responsible for protecting federal personnel and property in coordination with the lead federal agency.
Training and Preparedness
- Task Force 51 forces, including the recently activated Marines, are trained in de-escalation, crowd control, and standing rules for use of force.
- The activation ensures continuous coverage and adequate force levels in the Los Angeles area.
