today we're going to be looking at the mods a new pair of earbuds from Skullcandy that allow you to modify them to your liking but coming in at a relatively cheap price point are these actually any good let's check it out [Music] starting off with the case it features a square shape with a flip top design the case is a bit on the larger side especially when you compare it to the sides of the earbuds themselves is made from matte plastic which is very light so it's not the most premium feeling out there the front of the case has the Skullcandy logo present and looking at the bottom we see a large LED indicator light which I actually love and a USBC port for charging switching over to the buds they feature an oval design with physical buttons included on both earbuds the physical buttons are covered by a layer of silicone with the Skull Candy logo on it above the logo we have one visible mic and on the bottom we see an LED indicator light for both earbuds [Music] the first thing that you'll notice is that these earbuds are very light which makes them rather comfortable to wear I've worn these for hours and did not experience any pain or discomfort with how light they are they stay locked in your ears as well doing my usual workouts and even with the shake test I had no fear of these falling out they're also small in size so if they don't stick up past my ears the weird thing about these earbuds is that even though they are in-ear earbuds it doesn't feel like they go all the way in so it almost feels like they just sit on the surface for me at least even still they never fell out so that's a pass in my books starting off with connectivity Bluetooth 5.2 is present here and as you would expect I do not experience any loss and sound while listening to music plus connecting it to my phone was quick and simple the mods have a water resistance rating of ip55 which means they are dust proof and can withstand lights flashes of water in our tests of spraying them with water they continued working without any issues Skullcandy also included a clear Voice Smart mic in each earbud which uses AI to isolate a person's voice to reduce the background noise they say that it's the closest thing to talking in person but I'll let you guys be the judge so here we are testing out the mice on the Skull Candy mods as usual I do have coffee shop noises playing on my iPad at around 50 volume and as you guys can see it's fairly close to me so the sound should be coming in Fairly loud so what I'm going to do I'll quiet down just to see if it does pick up that background noise okay now I'm going to go ahead I'll test out each earbud individually to see how the mics work so test test one two three all right now we'll remove this one here test test one two three okay now I'm gonna go ahead and turn this off here and this is what the mods sound like in a quiet environment let me know what you guys think continuing along multi-point connection makes its way to the mods which I know will be a huge plus to most of you you can connect up to two devices at the same time and switching between them work without any issues transparency what makes his way to the mods as well I found this to be a bit on the quieter side and noise has sounded a bit processed I went for a walk and I can listen to traffic comfortably with music playing at around 35 to 40 volume find my earbuds is also present here in the form of tile you'll need an account and Tile app for this work once everything is set up you'll be able to locate your earbuds if you happen to misplace that as mentioned earlier physical buttons are present here this is probably where I have the my biggest gripe with these not in terms of functionality because they're easy to press and are responsive but in terms of position just like we saw with the Skull Candy dimes the buttons are located at the top of the earbuds the problem with that is when it comes to actually pressing the buttons when they're in your ears anytime you do something that requires pushing the buttons you sort of push them out of position which can be rather annoying it doesn't matter how secure they are in your ears if you're just going to have to reposition them after you change a song or something I found the best way to press them is by sort of grouping them in between your index and thumb like so in like a pinching motion if they had moved the buttons closer to the bottom then it would have been a much better experience which is also what I said about the dimes on the bright side though you are able to customize the controls here and you can do so within the Skullcandy app which we will talk about in just a little bit finally the biggest question of all how do these sound well I'm pleased to announce that they sound pretty good actually a lot better than I expected to be honest the mods offer up a well-bound sound signature that gets everything right bass is Punchy and present enough where it doesn't overpower or wash out everything else mids are the strong point here being pushed forward and Highs are a lot more detail than expected Sarah's separation is great here too I was listening to visitor by Of Monsters and Men and you can hear the lead guitar play to the front left of you while the rhythm guitar play to the back right which was actually really cool overall right out of the box some mods provide a sound that most people will be happy with but of course if you don't happen to like the sound you can customize the sound signature using the onboard equalizer within the app which leads me to my next point so it's recommended to download the Skullcandy app in order to get the best experience possible from your earbuds design wise it's a very clean looking app which makes it very easy to use at the top you get your battery life for your earbuds as well as volume control next we have The Equalizer and you're given four different presets to choose from music podcasts movie and Custom next we have the stay aware toggle which is your transparency mode and at the bottom we have five cards three of which are just mini guides on their corresponding topic we're going to take a look at the button settings card from here you're given the choice of two or three presses as well as a long press for your controls Jeffy often to choose between the skipping songs going back a track training your transparency mode on or off and even volume control you do have the option for a single press but that is reserved for your playing pause all candy mods are rated for up to seven hours of usage with an additional 27 hours with the case in my test of listening to music at 50 volume I started the day off at 9 15 am and I was able to make it to 607 PM for a total of 8 hours and 52 minutes Quick Charge is available here with 10 minutes giving an extra two hours of play time unfortunately wireless charging is not available here but that's expected at this price point so how much do the mods cost I pay the full retail price of 79.99 Canadian or 59.99 us this is a very reasonable price point especially for everything that they have to offer this actually puts it in direct competition with the Jabra Elite 3s which is another great pair of earbuds at this price point it's actually nice to see the selection of earbuds getting better and better at the lower price points and I'm all for it foreign Skullcandy mods are great earbuds that offer a lot of features for the user Great Sound and battery life a find my earbuds option with tile a clean app experience and multi-point connection to name a few yes the position of the physical buttons are very annoying but I would still prefer this over touch controls any day and it's something that can be overlooked by using your phone so what I recommend buying them shortlisting them or passing on them if it wasn't obvious I say buy them overall I'm very happy with the mods they're packed with a lot of features at a reasonable price point which allows them to be accessible to a lot of people not only that but they sound great so if you're in the market for new earbuds but don't want to break the bank the Skullcandy mods are definitely worth looking into thanks for watching if you enjoyed this video go ahead and slap that like button and let me know your thoughts in the comment box down below
