Life in Mumbai's Deonar Dumping Ground

All these houses here... All these are built on a dumpyard. This is a house... and there is a sewer right in front of it. This one scene will tell you that why... the life expectancy is lower here compared to India. It's lower than the entire Mumbai. A person residing here can't live longer than 40 years. Our life is similar to a dog's. Do you understand what that means? As easy as it is to find intoxicants... It's not as easy to find water. It's not just India's, but the entire Asia's largest dumping ground. It is also India's oldest dumping ground. Formed during the British period. Today it's larger than 200 football fields. This is our Mumbai's 'Deonar Dumping ground'... which is also home to 2,00,000 people. The houses here are made of blue tin. which can break anytime. and even during drip during monsoons. The rooms of these houses are quite small. But six to seven members reside in most of these houses. Most of the people living here glue tiny mirrors to fabrics. Even the kids. And manage to earn Rs 6 - Rs 8 for each fabric. The roads have become sewers here. It means the dirty water from the canal has seeped into the roads. Hence, people have placed woods, doors to form a makeshift road. The people passing through this place face issues. We face issues, too. The water is filled from all four sides. Where should a person walk through? Everyone is facing issues, whether they are an adult or a child. Childrens face a lot of issues. Because they have to go and come back from school. My leg has been paralysed since I was 1.5 years old. - What happened? - Polio. It happened due to polio. What are the struggles faced by a handicapped or disabled person? There a lot of issues. Look at the pipes and the dirt. And insects, worms keep roaming around. There are a lot of rats. Several places are dug up. There are a lot of issues here. I have fallen here a lot of times. The canal is also broken. My brothers have also fallen. Was this a canal since forever or was it ever clean? It was clean. The water was quite clean. And I have told you before. Two huge boats used to pass through this place. Now there is nothing left other than the garbage. Is there a drug problem here? A lot. The major problem is drugs. And crimes happen because of drugs. There are more drug addicts here than castes. Ganja (cannabis), sulli, Whitener, white drugs, etc. Drugs has reached here too. The problem is primarily with drugs. People will talk properly if they do not consume drugs. They will go to work. If they are intoxicated with drugs, how will they be able to see drugs? How will they be able to talk properly? What happened to your eyes? My husband hit me when he was intoxicated and broke my eye. Husband broke your eye when he was intoxicated. People pass through these dirty canals everyday. The kids play here. Also, since there are a lot of mosquitoes, it's obvious that people fall ill a lot here. I got a fever one day when I was young. Then we visited a doctor. He gave me a polio injection. My legs got paralysed because of that. I wasn't able to walk the next day. Eventually, the police arrested the doctor and sent him to jail. - The doctor? - Yes. And said he will be kept in jail until I get better. Assalamualaikum There is a major water issue. Sometimes, we don't even get water. We get dirty water. We get dirty yellow, pale water. Drinking water is passed through these pipes, just for two hours everyday. But these pipes... are placed next to the dirty canal pipes. Everything has become so expensive. We presume in a few days... we might have to purchase water at the same price of petrol, in this area. What do you do, sir? I stitch. I am a worker. Sometimes, it so happens that. We bathe at the company. Because there is no water here. Odoo helps us to convey stories of such places to you... which is an all-in-one business platform, with 45+ applications. I created my website with this. That too for free, within 30 minutes. There is a website builder app in this. Choose your website type in this. I wanted to create a business website. And my business is categorized as 'infotainment'. Then I selected an objective, 'Develop a Brand'. I selected certain colours from this colour palette. Or I simply uploaded my brand logo, through which I was able to find it's colour palette. I selected the pages that I wanted. I selected a suitable theme from all these AI generated themes. All the work gets done easily with the drag-and-drop option. To create such columns and to change photos and texts. I can generate text with the help of AI. I can also add new pages easily. See, how easily I can develop a website. So, Odoo's website builder link is mentioned in the description below. Check this out now. Now let's get back to the video. I still beg today. I have built this house with donation. What's the definition of a house for you? What's a home? The one's who are rich and wealthy. Their dreams are quite big. Our dreams are smaller. Our house broke down in 2004. We started fighting for our rights after 2004. So what I am trying to say is... If you want to break... If you want to devastate the poor, then kill them sooner. We are dead anyway. And because of these mosquitoes, I've to get admitted in 10 days... in the hospital. If mosquitoes bite, I end up getting diagnosed with typhoid or malaria. Every time. Why are you crying? That's the condition here. I live alone. I have diseases. I had a son. He died by committing suicide. He was very young. And the one's who are alive, they are by themselves. I only have God. And we have y'all. That's all. Nothing else, child. Come here. This is my house. A poor person's abode. This is a house... close to the Deonar dumping ground. Aunt stays here alone. She cooks her own food. She conserves water in these containers. There is a toilet here. And this same place gets filled with water during monsoons. Yes, it does. It's happened for the first time that I turned on the camera. And a person started crying as soon as it was turned on. It shows that, no one heard what she was trying to say. Neither her family members nor the country. And then you will say, why do I create such videos in these places, in these lanes. These are dirty. But, aren't the people staying here humans? These lanes have provided homes to a lot of people who've come from across India. However, these lanes state that... Mumbai is a city that... No matter how much it gives... It takes a lot more than that. Are there intoxicants in this? Of a whitener? Whiteners, drugs, etc. And several other intoxicants are available in these lanes. You will find a lot of them in this area. And you will find a lot of people consuming it? When did you start taking it? It's been around... 10 to 12 years. Ok, you've been consuming these for the past 10 to 12 years. Only whiteners or something else? Only whiteners. How much does it cost? It's for 60. - For 60? - 50 to 60. And how long does it last? It lasts for three to four hours. How much do you consume in one day? I consume 1 or 2. So you consume bottles worth Rs 120 every day. 100 Rupees for this bottle and some extra for tobacco. Does your mother tell you to leave this? Yes, she hits me for it. Does she hit you? My family members scold and hit me. Are you unable to leave it? Yes, I am unable to. I try leaving for one or two days, but then resume again. I end up purchasing it. So it's clear that it's deadly and dangerous to live here. But the irony is that the government has decided... that the 300-acre hill (dumped with garbage). Half of it, i.e. 124 acre will be cleared. From Dharavi, i.e. people from another slum will be sent here. It means, instead of relocating people from here. More people will be brought and put into danger. This garbage hill is 14 meters tall. i.e. higher than 12 storey building. It would take 12 - 14 years to clean it. You will find both the wet and dry waste together... which people living here segregate it and earn 100 - 200 rupees. But it's not an easy work. A lot of people lost their lives while doing this. Few people have come under bulldozers too. A lot of them have been injured too. I got hurt and I am unable to fold my legs completely. You are unable to fold it. No. But earlier, I couldn't fold even a little, but now I can. And when did you get hurt? It's been six months. What were you doing when you got hurt? I was working. Did you visit the hill to pick? - Picking and segregating. - Yes. I am unable to work. I can't walk either. I fell down and broke my limbs. We think people from other cities come and stay here. But it's not like that. There are several communities in Mumbai, whom their own members don't accept. The society doesn't accept them. So these houses give a roof to them. One of them is Mumbai's transgender, i.e. 'kinnar' community. God has sent us to earth to make people laugh and smile. He didn't send us to break people's heart. People shoo us away, curse us, look at us evil eyes. But we don't care about any of that. We live on the mercy of Allah and God. Our own people didn't accept us. Neither the family members. Nor siblings. Eventually, I visited her and she supported me. Spoke to my family members. So now since you have a house. What's the definition of a house for you? As per my understanding, We don't have our parent's house, either. Why? We still tend to talk about such things. Oh! He is a transgender, right? How will he be able to give us a kin? If you look at it. This is our house. All of us transgenders together. It's all us. We are family members, parents, and the support system to ourselves. Even If we live in a slum together. It's still a palace for us. As there are a lot of issues. There are also people who write songs about these issues and create a rap. And share these issues across the world. Started from the ground Now we are heading for the sky. An art by the pen It's peace to the soul In a life filled with darkness Rap is my sunshine Won't let me stop My mother's support It's not about the age I keep a distance from people People talk behind my back And I don't say a word today Keep asking me questions But are not ready for an answer I do know a lot But I won't disclose the secrets Ever since I was 5 years old, I started writing in a diary ever since. Because I was alone. I had no friends. After that, I started creating an artform out of it. The way I used to write in the diary. I started writing poetry. Eventually, I started rapping. My father is very proud of me. I am like a son for him. He always comes to pick me up at night. After the performance is completed. He doesn't watch my performance. And I think it's good. I meant that he should not attend my performance... until something huge happens. Until there are lakhs of people gathered. It's Ramadan month currently. It means more than 70% of the population, fast here. It will be so difficult to live without drinking water, without eating for the entire day. From morning 4 am... until breaking the fast at 6 pm in the evening. It's not easy to do that in such a place. Is the fast 'Roza' broken by eating dates? Because this is our Prophet's first and most favourite meal. It's a tradition as well. People presume that we only consume drugs in the slums, crimes or violence happen. But it's not like that. There are a lot of talented people in our slums. Our movies often show us that we find a lot of gangsters, crimes and drugs here. And we could find them too. But movies don't tell us that tuition centres are run in these very lanes. And this is one of them. Which is run by the youth for the youth here. More than 100 children visit this tuition centre. They study with hope. It's very important for kids to learn, so that they are able to think about their lives, about their parents and their community. So they help their families, their neighbours. Hence, education is important. I would like my children to become strong with each other... instead of weakness. There are a lot of kids who have great talent. They either can't step out due to their condition or people. And If someone does, people outside start stating... The individual has come from an area where violence and drugs are involved. He must be doing the same. Eventually, pushing such individuals back. Most of you in the comments might have already written that, People staying here have been the same and they won't change. So I would like to ask you. Doesn't a lotus grow in a mud? The kids were born and brought up here. Despite that, they hope for a change. So why can't we? Why can't we ask our government, our country... Isn't a change possible here?
