Overview
This session provides a practical guide to using the Viper Go foam roller (and 2.0 version) for targeted muscle release in clients, emphasizing proper technique and safety.
Equipment Overview and Settings
- The Viper Go and 2.0 foam rollers both feature a power button and three vibration speeds.
- First speed is recommended for most clients; higher speeds only for clients with dense muscle structures.
Calf and Soleus Release Techniques
- Begin with client face up, targeting the calf using vibration over tight spots.
- Maintain plantar flexion to maximize muscle relaxation and effectiveness.
- Move down to the soleus, using side-to-side motion to break up tightness.
Hamstring and Posterior Chain Release
- Viper’s wider surface allows better access to the hamstring.
- Client can be supine or prone; maintain plantar flexion to avoid engaging unintended muscles.
- Roll over tender areas, focusing on client comfort and muscle relaxation.
Quadriceps Release
- Have client lie prone and position the roller under the quad, searching for tender spots.
- Assist by bending the client’s knee and facilitating internal/external rotation.
- Stand on the same side as the client for observation and comfort monitoring.
Latissimus Dorsi (Lats) Release
- The roller’s width enables effective work on the lats, difficult with narrower tools.
- Client lies on their side, rolling from the arm down towards the hip until a knot is detected.
- Gently roll back and forth over the tender area to address tightness.
Upper Back and Thoracic Spine Release
- Position the roller between the shoulder blades with the client supine.
- Instruct clients not to roll below the thoracic spine to avoid lumbar discomfort or risk.
- Client hugs themselves, lifts hips, and rolls from the top of the shoulder blades to the last rib.
- Avoid rolling the entire back if discomfort increases; focus on small, targeted movements.
Safety and Client Comfort
- Always prioritize client comfort and monitor for pain or discomfort.
- Do not push down on the client; guide and support movement.
- Pause on especially tender areas for up to 30 seconds, then finish the session.
