Overview of Heart Meridian

  • Type: Hand Shao Yin Meridian
    • Hand Channel: Starts or finishes in the hand
    • Shao Yin: Lesser or smaller
  • Function: Least amount of Qi and blood
  • Clinical Implication: Heart and Kidney issues require longer treatment due to low Qi and blood
  • Timing: Activated between 11 AM and 1 PM (noon)

  • Midday Protection: Avoid overworking and stress at lunch to protect the heart
  • Advice for Patients: Sit down, chew food, avoid coffee, and be calm at lunchtime

Pathway of Heart Channel

  • Starts: In the heart organ (rare)
  • Branches: Internal and External
    • Internal Branch: Travels to small intestine, throat, and eyes
    • External Branch: Heart 1 under the armpit, runs along the arm to the pinky

Acupuncture Points of the Heart Channel

Heart 1, 2, and 3

  • Location:
    • Heart 1: Center of axilla
    • Heart 2: 3 cun above Heart 3 at the edge of the biceps
    • Heart 3: Medial end of the elbow
  • Functions:
    • Heart 1: Promotes circulation, treats chest pain, local swelling
    • Heart 2: Similar to Heart 1, assists with stress and headaches, local use for biceps pain
    • Heart 3: Clears heat, addresses manic depression and parkinsonian tremors due to heat in the blood

Heart 4 to Heart 9

  • Location: Relative to Heart 7 (wrist crease on the radial side of FCU)
    • Heart 4: 1.5 cun above Heart 7
    • Heart 5: 1 cun above Heart 7
    • Heart 6: 0.5 cun above Heart 7
    • Heart 8: Between 4th and 5th metacarpal bones on the palm
    • Heart 9: Radial side of the baby finger nail (0.1 cun at base)
  • Functions:
    • Heart 4: Nourishes blood/yin, treats anxiety, insomnia, sudden voice loss due to stress
    • Heart 5: Luo-connecting point to small intestine, treats cystitis, urinary inflammation, speech issues
    • Heart 6: Best for night sweats (with Kidney 7), treats chest pain, nosebleeds due to excess fire
    • Heart 7: Calms mind for anxiety, insomnia, poor memory, and is the yuan source point
    • Heart 8: Clears excess heart fire, treats canker sores, burning urination, and palm heat
    • Heart 9: Treats fainting, manic behavior, and general use for acute issues
