CNA Catheter Care Procedure

Introduction

  • CNA introduces herself as Patti to the patient, Miss Jones.
  • Explains the need to perform catheter care.
  • Ensures patient consent and privacy.

Preparation

  • Curtain: Closed to ensure privacy.
  • Handwashing: Hands are washed before gathering supplies.
  • Supplies Needed:
    • Barrier
    • Four washcloths
    • Towel
    • Chucks (absorbent pads)
    • Privacy blanket
    • Basin
    • Soap
    • Gloves

Setting Up

  • Water Preparation:
    • Water temperature checked by the patient.
    • Washcloths placed in water to stay warm.
  • Privacy Blanket:
    • Used to cover and keep the patient warm.
  • Arranging Bed:
    • Sheet pulled down to knees.
    • Chucks placed under the patient to keep the bed dry.

Patient Positioning

  • Patient is asked to scoot and roll to assist with placing the chucks.
  • Care is taken to ensure catheter tubing is not pulled.

Cleaning the Catheter

  • Gown rolled within the privacy blanket.
  • Cleaning Steps:
    • Soap applied to the washcloth.
    • Catheter cleaned by holding it and wiping away from the body.
    • Procedure repeated four times.
  • Rinsing Steps:
    • Same method as cleaning using a rinsed washcloth.

Perineal Care

  • Cleaning Steps:
    • Labia and surrounding areas cleaned using a five-leaf system.
    • Process includes holding the catheter out of the way and cleaning from top to bottom.
  • Rinsing Steps:
    • Repeat cleaning steps with clear water.
  • Drying:
    • Area gently patted dry from top to bottom.

Final Steps

  • Covering Up:
    • Patient covered back with a blanket, gown adjusted.
  • Checking Catheter:
    • Ensures tubing is coiled and not kinked or on the floor.
  • Cleaning Up:
    • Soiled items and gloves disposed of properly.
    • Basin cleaned and stored correctly.
  • Patient Comfort:
    • Offers magazine, ensures patient comfort.
    • Provides call light for patient assistance.

Completion

  • Opens curtain and washes hands.
  • Reflects on the procedure and makes any necessary corrections.
  • Skill completion reported to the evaluator.
