Overview

The Certified Dog Trainer Exam (CDT) is administered by the International Association of Canine Professionals (IACP) and is designed to evaluate the knowledge, skills, and abilities of professional dog trainers.

Applicant Goals

  • Evaluate dog temperament and issues effectively while educating the owner.

Tips for Completing the CDT Portfolio

  • Ensure all writing, including Case Studies and Client Handouts, is typed in English, clear, and descriptive.

Application Requirements

  • Application fee: $249.99 for members.
  • Three letters of reference.
  • A resume or bio.
  • Consent to a criminal background check.
  • Affidavit confirming no convictions of animal neglect, abuse, or cruelty.

Application Process

  • Once applications are approved, candidates receive an email with start and end dates for a 6-month period to complete the CDT Portfolio.
  • A unique CDT Applicant ID is provided to complete the CDT Portfolio v 4.0 and submit Client Feedback Forms.

CDT Portfolio Elements

  • Three Case Studies: Each with seven sections.
  • Portfolio completion is online; it is recommended to save all documents and narratives separately.
  • Original photographs must be submitted; stock images are not allowed.
  • Elements include:
    • Intake Questionnaire (from IACP form in Resource Manual).
    • Two photographs of each dog.
    • Three Resource Photographs showing items and tools used.
    • Educational Materials (handouts, audio, video materials).
    • Writing Narrative for each case study with 3-5 lessons.
    • Client Feedback Forms submitted electronically.
