[Music] hello and welcome to this virtual presentation on the a through g requirements what you need to know my name is miss vasquez and i'm going to be going over what a through g means why it's important how it's different than the high school graduation requirements and how you can track your atg progress for yourself and for other students using something called uc doorways let's get started so what are the a through g's you've probably heard of these before and if the university pendants in the background are making you think that this has something to do with college you're right the atheist are a list of high school courses that you need to complete with a c or better in order to be eligible for admissions or acceptance into you uc's or the university of california campuses which are listed here such as ucla uc san diego uc riverside and my alma mater uc santa barbara and csu or california state university campuses listed here such as cal state university northridge cal state university monterey bay and all the way to the top cal state university humboldt just to name a few because there are 23 csu campuses private schools have their own application process but many follow a3g requirements as well or they have something similar you should always double check with each private university that you're interested in to see what their requirements are you can do this by checking their admissions page online or speaking with your high school counselor if you need help locating this another thing to remember is that the a through g's are only one part of the application process in some cases specific majors require additional classes to be taken sat and act scores may be required and schools will want to see what extracurricular activities you have been involved with and again if you have any questions on a specific school or major requirements you can always find these online but speak to your high school counselor if you need some additional help now let's dive into what the through g's are each letter is used to represent a specific subject area and each letter has a different yearly requirement so let's go down the list a is for history and social sciences which required two years b is for english which requires four years c is for mathematics which requires three years but four years recommended d is for science which requires two years but three years recommended e is a language other than english two years required three recommended f is visual and performing arts one year and then g is college preparatory elective one year which we'll get into later i do want to point out that these requirements do share some similarities to the john burroughs high school requirements for graduation but there are some differences to consider such as the 20 credits of pe that are required the 10 credits for a health and career class and the 10 hours of service learning remember you also need to successfully graduate from john burroughs high school by completing all of their requirements in order to apply to any university or college so it's important that you plan accordingly also remember that to graduate from john burroughs high school they require that you have a d in all your coursework but to enroll in campuses that are using a through g requirements you need to have a c or better in all of your a through g coursework so let's get into the a through g's the first one requirement a is history for section a you need two years completed and this can be fulfilled with one year of world history and one year of u.s history in order to see which classes john burroughs high school offers that meet these requirements we're going to be using a website called uc doorways and later on in this presentation i'll show you exactly how to access this on your own if you have your transcript handy you can check off the parts we have already fulfilled and which ones you still need to plan for as we go through the rest of the a3gs but for now here we can see which classes can be taken to fulfill section a at john burroughs high school as you go through these also notice that ap classes can be used to fulfill a through g requirements requirement b is english for english you need four years that's every year of your high school career for any esl students up to one year of esl english can be used for this requirement again also notice how you can use an ap course to fulfill one of the requirements such as ap english language and composition requirement c is mathematics three years are required but four years are recommended this is especially true if you're interested in applying to any majors in the stem fields some majors make this mandatory for the application but the more years of math you have the more competitive you will look when you apply also remember to graduate john burroughs high school you must complete algebra and geometry section d science similar to the c requirement section d requires two years but recommends three again if you're interested in going into the stem field it's highly encouraged that you meet three years and if you're applying to any csu campuses they require that one of your science courses comes from a biological science such as biology or anatomy and one comes from a physical science such as chemistry and physics requirement e a language other than english two years are required but for a more competitive application 3 is recommended requirement e is a little different as it goes by level of instruction meaning that if you speak the language and test into a higher level such as spanish 2 or spanish speakers too that would fulfill the two-year requirement speak with your counselor for more information on this requirement f is visual and performing arts one year is required and it has a variety of options for you to choose from such as art drama choir band or dance which brings us to our last requirement requirement g college preparatory elective i like to think of this one as a free space as you can choose any additional course from a through f that hasn't been used to meet the additional requirements this can be an ap course another science math or second language course a visual or performing arts course or any of these now that we went over what the a3g requirements are let's go over what the uc doorways website is the uc doorways website is what i was using throughout the presentation to show you what john burroughs high school courses could be used to meet specific a through g requirements you can get to the uc doorways website by using this address or you can just type in uc doorways onto google and click a through g course list which should take you here next we're going to type in the name of the school where you took the course in this case we'll search john burroughs high school then you're going to click on the name of the school once it pops up make sure to double check spelling and that you have the right location next we're going to click on the blue button that says course list that will take you here you can use this site to see what courses meet which a3g requirements make sure you spell the course the same way that it appears on your transcript another way to use this is to search by subject area you can select a b c d e f g and see which courses are offered for that section just like we did during the presentation lastly make sure you're searching under the correct school year in which the course was taken which brings us to the end of our presentation today we went over what the atheist are why they're important for college applications and admissions how they're different than the high school graduation requirements and we explore the uc doorways website to see which classes at john burroughs high school meet our a through g requirements remember that you will be completing these requirements starting from your freshman year all the way up to your last semester as a senior so aim for c's and above i hope you all found this presentation helpful and i encourage you to speak to your high school counselor in order to plan out your a3g courses or to answer any questions that you have about a through g's or the college application process good luck to everyone y'all got this [Music] you
