can you talk about how people can really voice their health concerns in alignment with their values so my mother as an immigrant she was born in the philippines came here when she was 18. i got sick as a child and what i'm realizing now is how difficult of the time that she had dealing with me being sick i have three brothers and one sister also at home two of them also have health conditions growing up and hearing my mom's story and knowing my side of the story i did not realize what she was actually going through in her communication issues with the doctors that she was talking to and as a woman who had come to this country she was still young she didn't have any experience she was basically going off of what these doctors had said and one of the times that i was sick i was 14 years old we rushed to the emergency room and they had told my parents to say goodbye this was going to be the last time that they had seen me and my mom said that she didn't even really understand that she had told me that doctors knew everything you know she'd come from this place usually they didn't seek out the help of doctors so we went through a whole long period of people praying over me we brought in you know people from different churches we visited things we you know everything we could acupuncture i had a doctor who's my primary physician who was very much into the holistic and so i think we have to look at the cultural differences where we communicate you have to look at how even your you know your family reacts to news i have friends whose families don't believe in modern medicine and so really dealing with trying to have an illness and without treatment and trying to find things that really agree with not only what they believe and what they want for their quality of life but also looking at how they incorporate their own family values i think it's difficult but again i think it goes to that opening up that honesty really trying to communicate with people and and break down those barriers but for a person i think it's being true to yourself into your beliefs knowing what you believe in and really sticking to those things you know culture is is hugely important to everyone whether you're black white asian and and it's important to keep your own core values intact but to do it in a way that's really going to benefit your care as well [Music]
