Guide to Setting Up Plesk on Linux

Hi there, in this video I'm going to take you through the process of setting up Plask on your Linux server. In my case I'm going to be using Ubuntu on a VPS edition 2, but these instructions should pretty much work for any installation of Linux and also pretty much any virtual server that you can come across. So, let's get to it. So like I said I'm going to be using one of our VPS Edition 2 servers and a good reason to use a VPS Edition 2 and to come with us at Fasos is that these servers come with a Plesk license key included so you don't have to worry about using a trial version or paying for your own copy of Plesk you get your own free of charge alongside your server so that's a really good reason to come with us.

So here we are on my control panel looking at my VPS Edition 2 and the reason I'm here is because I'm going to need some login details to get started with this whole process. Now Now to get started, I'm gonna need to get into SSH. So in order to do that, I'm going to use the program Putty, which will act as my way of logging into SSH.

Obviously, if you have another solution available to you, you wanna use that, by all means go ahead, but I prefer Putty myself. So what I need to do here is put in the host name and I can save this as a session if I want to, but just for now, I'm just gonna open. I'm going to accept this and then in a full screen, just for easy visibility, and we've got root. as my username and you are going to want to log in as root when you're installing plusk and let's just grab my password and there we go we are logged into ssh so the first thing you're going to want to do when you're logged in is make sure that everything is up to date especially if it's a new installation it might be using an outdated image so i'm going to do apt update obviously because we're in root we don't need to do sudo or anything like that so we can just go ahead with the commands without having to mess about. So we can just go ahead with the commands as normal.

And we can see here that there are some updates that need to be done. So I'm going to trust what it's saying. I'm going to do apps upgrade. Why? Just to speed through these updates, get them all done out of the way so that we can get started with Plask.

So I'm going to leave you here whilst we're waiting for these updates to install. And then once that's done, we'll get right back to setting up Plask on this server. Okay, and we're back and the updates are completed. And I've gone ahead and rebooted the server just to make sure that everything is working correctly. So Now that we've done that, the next thing that we're going to want to do is actually start to install Plesk.

So there's a bunch of ways that you can do this. And obviously there are also different ways depending on what distribution of Linux you're using. So the best thing that I can recommend you do if you're installing Plesk maybe onto a new distribution or you're not entirely sure of the process, come to the Plesk guides because these are really going to help you get through this process.

So you can see here they've got a range of different options. And the top one is actually one that's going to work perfectly for us, which is using curl to install Plesk. And all we actually need to do here is just... copy this command out and paste it into our ssh terminal and so providing that curl is installed on this server which it should be should just be able to run this command and there we go it's already starting the process for installing plus for us it's just going to go through the whole installation process and get it all sorted and so i know i just left you to get Ubuntu installed but i am now going to leave you again just let plus get installed properly and then once that is all done because and this really is that simple once it's all done you I'm going to come back to you and then we're just going to go through the final steps of making sure that Plesk is installed. So it's been about 10 minutes and I can see now that it's saying that the changes were applied successfully and it's taking me back to the command prompt.

So I know that the Plesk installation is now done. Perfect. So we're pretty much done here on the SSH terminal.

The only thing that you would potentially need to check, and this really depends on your server host and what you may have configured before starting to set up Plesk, you're going to need to check and make sure that your firewall is open, specifically for the ports that Plesk requires. Now I know that with the Fasos VPS Edition 2, there is no firewalls installed locally on the server for us. That's something we'd need to install ourselves. But I also know that in the default firewall policies, if I take a look, I can see that 8443 and 8447 are both open. And these are the ports that Plesk needs.

So what you're going to need to do is, if you're not using a VPS Edition 2, make sure that the local firewall rules are set so that these are open. Or make sure there's no firewall on at all. But I would only do that if you know you've got an external firewall. So if you're with Fasthost or another server provider that does that, come and check the external firewall.

Make sure that these ports are open as well. If you don't have an external firewall, definitely have a firewall installed on your own server. That is definitely recommended. Now that we've done that, we can now come out of SSH. We don't need that anymore.

Yeah, we can close that session. And now what we can do is go to our Plesk. page, our Plesk admin panel. So the way to do that is again if you're using a VPS edition 2 you can just come to this link in the control panel right here where it says admin panel.

That set that up for us when we've requested a Plesk license key. If you don't have a VPS edition 2, then you can actually get to the panel quite easily by taking your server IP address or host name if that's how you've got it set up and add in 8443 after a colon at the end and use that as a URL. Now I don't need to do that because it's a link for me right there.

I'm going to proceed through to that page. So here we are at the admin panel, we're on the sign-in page and what we need to do is just put in our normal server details. This is a default installation so it will take on the root login details to start with and we can always change these later as needed. So let's go into the control panel again, grab my password, go into here and then we're going to paste that in.

And so we're now logged into the Plastik admin panel we're just going to have to do the first time setup which includes entering in your contact information. So just enter in the relevant information that you need to put in. and set a password. You can also have a generator password for you if you want to.

You can also set it to reset the address password on next login if you want to. And then here is the important bit again, if you are installing Plesk and you're using a VPS edition two, you have a paid license included with your VPS edition two. If not, then you will need to go ahead and purchase a Plesk license or use the full feature trial license.

If you are looking to purchase a Plesk license, all you need to do is just go through to the Plesk website. and here you can actually purchase Plesk if that's what you need. So in our case we don't need to do that because we already have a license key right here and once you have confirmed that you've read and accepted the EULA I would definitely recommend you read that if you haven't done so before and then click to enter Plesk and now it's going to do the final setup, this is only going to take a few moments, going to do the final setup setting up the actual web server element of Plesk and also securing the server for us and then we can start to make use of Plesk. And here we are, it's done that quick.

We can see it's still initializing some elements, but it's now ready to explore, ready to start using. So I hope that's helped and I hope you've got Plesk set up and ready to go. If you are looking for more information on what to do with Plesk now you've got it set up, stay tuned because we'll have more content coming out soon. Bye for now.
