Lecture Notes: Playing Chords on Guitar
Introduction to Chords
- Chords: Three or more notes played simultaneously.
- Chord Box: A visual representation of the fretboard to show finger placement on the guitar.
Understanding the Chord Box
- Vertical Lines: Represent the strings of the guitar.
- Horizontal Lines: Represent the frets on the guitar neck.
- Sixth String (Low E): Thickest string.
- First String (High E): Thinnest string.
Finger Placement
- Finger goes between the frets, not on them.
- Frets are numbered sequentially: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc.
Visualizing the Guitar with Chord Box
- The chord box simulates the guitar neck.
- X's on Strings: Indicates the string is not played.
Playing a Chord
- Open Strings: Notation "0" means strum the string without pressing it down.
- Example Chord: G Chord
- Donβt strum the 6th (low E) or 5th strings.
- Strum the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd strings open.
- Use the third finger (ring finger) on the first string, third fret.
