Spanish Nouns and Definite Articles

Overview

  • Spanish nouns are either masculine or feminine.
  • Nouns are also singular or plural, similar to English.

Masculine Nouns

  • Typically end in 'O'.
  • Examples:
    • Libro
    • Perro
    • Gato

Feminine Nouns

  • Typically end in 'A'.
  • Examples:
    • Pluma
    • Oveja
    • Mochila

Definite Articles

  • Definite articles are used to say "the" in Spanish.
  • There are four forms of the definite article:
    • El: Masculine singular
    • Los: Masculine plural
    • La: Feminine singular
    • Las: Feminine plural

Rules for Using Definite Articles

  • Definite articles must match the noun in gender and number.
  • Examples:
    • El libro (The book) - "Libro" is masculine singular, use "el".
    • La mochila (The backpack) - "Mochila" is feminine singular, use "la".
    • Los gatos (The cats) - "Gatos" is masculine plural, use "los".
    • Las plumas (The pens) - "Plumas" is feminine plural, use "las".
