Overview
This lecture reviews the changing interactions between American Indians and various European nations—Spain, England, and France—during early colonization, highlighting contrasts in policies, relationships, and long-term effects on native populations.
Spanish and American Indian Interactions
- The Spanish established a racial caste system with American Indians near the bottom.
- Spanish colonizers viewed American Indians mainly as sources of labor and religious conversion.
- Coercive Spanish efforts to convert Pueblo Indians led to the Pueblo Revolt, temporarily expelling the Spanish from Santa Fe.
- Spanish reconquered Santa Fe 12 years after the Pueblo Revolt.
English and American Indian Interactions
- English settlers arrived in areas without large native empires, so they lacked a major labor force to enslave.
- English colonists, especially in New England, migrated as family groups and rarely intermarried with natives.
- Initial peaceful coexistence involved cultural exchange (manufactured goods, iron tools, farming and hunting techniques).
- Increasing English settlement led to land encroachment and conflicts such as Metacom’s (King Philip’s) War (1675).
- After Metacom’s death, native resistance was effectively crushed and English settlers continued forcing tribes off their land.
- Key difference: Spanish subjugated natives; English forcibly displaced them.
French and American Indian Interactions
- The French focused on trade and military alliances with American Indians rather than colonization.
- Maintained better relations, sometimes marrying into native groups to secure trading rights.
- Established trading posts for the fur trade instead of large settlements.
- Allied with tribes like the Huron against others such as the Iroquois.
Outcomes and Native Responses
- Europeans generally did not see American Indians as equals.
- Lack of native unity made unified resistance to Europeans rare.
- Some native groups allied with different European powers, others migrated to avoid settlers.
