Hi everybody here, Doctor O here. In this short video, I’m just going to talk about the different range in the flagella you might see so ahh first. Just to remind you what flagella do ahh they are contracted down they are used for movement. So you can see one of them can see on the far left you can see a whole bunch of them. So actually the first group we don’t see here is called Atrichous so bacteria that don’t have flagella will be atrichous. Ahh then you see, so all bacteria that have flagella they are gonna be polar or peritrichous which will end with polar just one or both ends you will see the flagella. So first, group here we have here is a monotrichous that’s gonna be single mono, single flagella on one end. So amphitrichous , Amph means both, I think of like amphibians how they can live on water and land so amphibians means you gonna have umm flagella on both ends, you can have one or several but umm so amphitrichous flagella on both poles on both ends. Lophotrichous means a tufted of flagella on one end and then lastly we have peritrichous so peritrichous means all over the place now this picture doesn’t do a justice this could have umm hundred or hundreds of flagella even on the surface so ahh remember flagella are for bacterial movement. Because since they are so tiny, bacteria moving through water will be like you trying to swim through peanut butter. So just one last kinda a cool thing, the peritrichous flagella just all over the place. This is ahh is even being used in the movies like the matrix to to make like there umm i think they are called centenos these umm alien robot creature thing or whatever they are, but umm they are actually not only their structure but how they move they run and tamble which will cover in several videos, is a actually what they are modeled after so it’s kinda interesting okay. Atrichous no flagella. Monotrichous one flagella on one pole one end. Amphitrichous flagella on both ends. Lophotrichous a tuft of flagella on one end and then when you have flagella all over you are peritrichous. Okay have a wonderful day, Be blessed.
