Conjugating AR Verbs in Preterite Tense

¡Hola!, in this video, we'll be learning how to conjugate "ar" verbs into the preterite. If you've never heard the word preterite before, it is a way to tell past actions in Spanish or past tense. So you might call it the past tense, If you're not much of a grammar guru, though, the present tense would be I talk. The past tense I talked. Usually we accomplish or do the past tense in English by adding an "ed" to the verb. So in Spanish it's a little bit more complicated, but still fairly simple once you get the rules down. So let's review a regular "ar" verb "trabajar" (to work) "Yo trabajo", "Tú trabajas" "Él trabaja" "Ella trabaja", "Usted trabaja", "Nosotros trabajamos", "Ellos trabajan", "Ellas trabajan" "Ustedes trabajan" Now in the past tense the endings are a little bit different, but they follow the same pattern of groupings. That is, if you notice that "él, ella, usted" still a group, "ellos, ellas, ustedes" still a group. So for I worked. You worked. He worked. She worked. We worked. They worked. You all worked. We'd have the following. "Yo trabajé" "Tú trabajaste" "Él trabajo", "Ella trabajó" "Usted trabajó", "Nosotros trabajamos" "Ellos trabajaron", "Ellas trabajaron", "Ustedes trabajaron", notice The "Nosotros" form is exactly the same as in the present tense. We can tell what you mean by the context with sentences. Okay, let's try another one. "Cantar" (to sing) the present tense I sing, you sing, he sings, she sings. "Yo canto", "Tú cantas", "Él canta", "Ella canta", "Usted canta" "Nosotros cantamos" "Ellos cantan", "Ellas cantan" "Ustedes cantan" in the Preterite I sang, you sang, he sang, we sang, etc. "Yo canté", "Tú cantaste", "Él cantó", "Ella cantó", "Usted cantó", "Nosotros cantamos" "Ellos cantaron", "Ellas cantaron", "Ustedes cantaron", third time's chart. How about "Bailar"? (to dance) in the present tense I dance, you dance, he dances, she dances... "Yo bailo", Tú bailas" "Él baila", "Ella baila", "Usted baila", "Nosotros bailamos", "Ellos bailan", "Ellas bailan", "Ustedes bailan", And the past tense. "Yo bailé", "Tú bailaste", "Él bailó", "Ella bailó", "Usted bailó", "Nosotros bailamos". "Ellos bailaron", "Ellas bailaron", "Ustedes bailaron", Your turn. Now, what I'm going to do for you is give you a little cheat sheet up here. So the formula is then "é" to form, "aste" "Él", or "Ella", or "Usted", or "Nosotros" "amos" And "Ellos, ellas, ustedes" "aron" Okay, I'll give you the present tense form. Now, I'd like you to change it into the preterite, or past tense. Okay, so give you the present tense. And I want you to change it into the past tense you can use cheat sheet. "Yo estudio" "Yo estudié" "Él baila" "Él bailó" "Ella canta" "Ella cantó" "Tú ayudas" "tú ayudaste" "Nosotros trabajamos" "Nosotros trabajamos" same thing. "Veronica no escucha música" "Veronica no escuchó música" "Pablo y Enrique tocan la guitarra" "Pablo y Enrique tocaron la guitarra" ¡Muy bien! Now translate these into Spanish. Make sure to check the word bank if you're not sure what something means. Okay. I visited my grandmother. "Yo visité a mi abuela" We talked a lot. "Nosotros hablamos mucho". The boys swam. "Los muchachos nadaron" the female teacher taught. "La profesora enseñó" Did you need the money? "¿Necesitaste el dinero? hopefully this was helpful.
