Tom, very gentle, you know, very gentle and kind. He was a crazy fan. yeah. He was a very sort of pleasing figure. You know, he liked to do just like, You know, he wanted you to sort of like him. right. And he had a, And he had a... he had a naive type of a sound. He had a naive type of persona. You know, But, you know, he wasn't... he wasn't, as naive as he behaved. he was much different. I mean, he was much hipper. He held auditions for a drummer and a bass player. He held auditions for a drummer at the bass player. And he seemed very shy and polite. He was a very shy, bright, calm guy. You know what I mean? So we went up and had our pint of beer, This is the Renta. We're about to visit a band meeting that's been at the house since October. talked about music, went back down to the club. And Chaz said, And so, they're coming back tomorrow. can you come back tomorrow? And, also, they've been doing some cheering, And I said, if you give me ten shillings, so they're coming back tomorrow. I'll come back tomorrow. The pay was about $30 a week. To be a star, the bass sounds... I suppose. Decca turned them down, Turn them down. but London overflowed with DJs and rock stars crammed into a few square miles of Soho. And there, the buzz was all about Hendrix. He was unique and completely different. A dynamo, a monster on stage, a giant. The End The Beatles and The Who went to see him play. dancing and play. But we were going to sort of, we were going to try to get it by him. you know, if it didn't go into the charts, Once he had a toehold in the charts, we'd have to buy it in. You know, oh, hello, and he just, Mr Hendricks. you know, I spoke to him a few words and then he said, And he just, you know, I spoke to him a few words. And he said, look, look. you see, He said, my boy's in England. my boy's in England. He said, He said, you tell my boy to write me. um, can you tell my boy to write me? I'm not paying for no first, I'm not paying for no, of course, no collect calls. no collect calls. I'm about to put the phone down. And I thought, well, Hi there, I don't Brian Matthew here in London with news of your fave brave old star. There was no going back. There was no going back. London seemed to run on sex and drugs. You know, he's been, you know, he couldn't fly to the time where he used to. You know, You know, he never gets up till midday anyway. he never gets up. up to midday anyway but um she was frantic and i told her to just um walk him around you know coffee uh splash some water on his face you know sometime later dannemann called again to say that hendrix was getting worse he She was frantic. Had a nice, um, dinner round. You know, coffee, smashed some water on his face. Sometime later, Dannemann called again to say that Hendrix was getting worse. He was throwing up, was throwing up regurgitating in his sleep i regurgitating in his sleep. I said, I said, turn him over, turn him over, turn him over. turn him over. And I started to pull on my clothes and rush over to her place. And I started to pull on my clothes and rush over to her place. Burton says he told Dannemann to call an ambulance. Burden says he told Dannemann to call an ambulance. I can't get an ambulance. I can't get an ambulance. There's hashish in the place. This is how she should embrace me, And I said, you know. There was a monitor on, which was dead. Hendricks had taken an unknown number of German sleeping pills prescribed for Dannemann, powerful barbiturates. He'd also taken amphetamines. The nurse came out and said that they thought they had saved him. A nurse came out and said that they thought they had saved him. Could he have been saved? Could he have been saved? No, No, I'm not too certain he could have been saved because certainly by the time I saw him he wasn't, I'm absolutely certain he couldn't have been saved, because certainly by the time I saw him, he wasn't savable. he wasn't saveable. So So I insisted to see him. I insisted. I received a resource, So I was in hand and that beautiful turquoise ring that I gave him there. and I had a beautiful trip. I said to her, I said, I said, okay, he's gone. he's gone. In the apartment, In the apartment, Burton found what he first thought was a suicide note. And I was going to make a serious sorry by jumping out of my window. And they want to commit suicide by jumping out of my window. A little hysterical. Not necessarily. But I was so shocked. I'm sort of shocked, you know. The body was sent home to Seattle. The body was sent home to Seattle. He told me he wanted to be buried in England, He told me he wanted to be buried in Haiti, which is the reason why I didn't go to the funeral. which is the reason why I didn't go to the funeral. I have to respect his wishes above anybody else's. I have to respect his wishes above anybody else's. Because he was ours. Because he was... ours. You know, You know, we felt like he was ours. we felt like he was ours. When Jill came down from heaven yesterday, Angel came down from heaven yesterday. She stayed with me just long enough to rescue me. she stayed with me just long enough to rescue me. But I think he was a tragic figure. He was a tragic figure. The man who is looking for approval.
