Introduction to Rhythm

  • Definition of Rhythm: The regular flow or recurrence of music through time.
    • Considered the life of music.

    • Guides movements in dancing.
    • Helps in clapping, swaying, or stomping along with music.

Music Sheets and Symbols

  • Music Sheet/Score: Contains symbols describing a song, including rhythm.
  • Musical Symbols:
    • Notes: Represent sound.
    • Rests: Represent silence.

Types of Notes

  • Whole Note:
    • Time Value: 4 beats.
  • Half Note:
    • Parts: Stem and Head.
    • Time Value: 2 beats.
  • Quarter Note:
    • Time Value: 1 beat.
  • Eighth Note:
    • Parts: Flag, Beam (when two eighth notes are connected).
    • Time Value: 1/2 beat.
  • Sixteenth Note:
    • Parts: Two Flags, or connected with Two Beams.
    • Time Value: 1/4 beat.

  • Whole Rest:
    • Time Value: 4 beats.

Note and Rest Equivalents

  • Note Pyramid:
    • 1 Whole Note = 2 Half Notes = 4 Quarter Notes = 8 Eighth Notes = 16 Sixteenth Notes.
  • Rest Pyramid: Follows the same pattern as the Note Pyramid.

Dotted Notes

  • Effect of Dots: Increases duration by adding half of the note's original value.
  • Examples:
    • Dotted Half Note: Original 2 beats + 1 beat = 3 beats.
    • Dotted Quarter Note: Original 1 beat + 1/2 beat = 1 1/2 beats.
    • Dotted Eighth Note: Original 1/2 beat + 1/4 beat = 3/4 beat.
