Delete, Switch, or Add Users on Nexus Devices

Overview

  • You can share your device by creating a user profile for each person.
  • Each profile has a personal space on the device, including Home screens, accounts, apps, and settings.
  • Some steps require Android 9.0 and above.

Delete or Switch Users

Delete User

If you're the primary user:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Go to System > Multiple users.
    • Search for 'users' if the option is not visible.
  3. Tap on the user's name.
  4. Tap Delete user > Delete.

If you're not the primary user:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Go to System > Multiple users.
    • Search for 'users' if the option is not visible.
  3. Tap More options.
  4. Tap Delete [username] from this device.
    • Note: This action cannot be undone.
  5. Device will switch back to the owner's profile.

Switch User

  1. Swipe down from the top of the home screen.
  2. Tap the user icon.
  3. Select the user you wish to switch to.

Switch Users on Android Go

  1. From Home screen, tap Switch user.
  2. Select a different user.

Add or Update Users

Add User

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Go to System > Multiple users.
    • Search for 'users' if the option is not visible.
  3. Tap Add user > OK.
    • If not visible, try Add user or profile > User > OK.
  4. Enter a name for the new user.

Set Up New User

  • Tap Switch to [username].
    • If new user is present: Tap Set up now to configure Google Account.
    • If not present: Tap Not now; user can set up later.

Update User

Update Your Own Profile

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Go to System > Multiple users.
    • Search for 'users' if the option is not visible.
  3. Tap your name.
    • Change profile name or picture as needed.

Enable Calls and SMS for Other Profiles

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Go to System > Multiple users.
    • Search for 'users' if the option is not visible.
  3. Tap the user's name.
  4. Tap Turn on phone calls.

Types of User Profiles

  • User: Regular non-owner profile, ideal for frequent users.
  • Guest: Temporary profile for short-term use, easy to delete.
  • Account: Enables use of services like Gmail.
  • Restricted Profile (Tablets): Controls user access to features/content.
  • Child User: Allows parental controls using Google Family Link.
