How to Tie a Windsor Knot

Introduction

  • One of the most popular knot styles
  • Also known as:
    • Double Windsor
    • Full Windsor

Steps to Tie the Knot

  1. Preparation

    • Start with your collar up.
    • Position the tie around your neck:
      • Wide end in the right hand.
      • Narrow end in the left hand.
    • Remember:
      • The longer the wide end, the lower the tie will hang.
  2. Cross the Ends

    • Cross the wide end over the narrow end.
    • Leave approximately 4 inches (10 cm) on the narrow end.
  3. First Thread

    • With your left hand, take the wide end and thread it through the back of the opening.
    • Pull it all the way through.
  4. Wrap the Tie

    • Wrap the wide end around the back of the narrow end.
    • Switch hands so the back of the tie is facing outward.
  5. Second Thread

    • With the wide end in your right hand, thread it through the front of the opening and down.
    • This completes the hardest part of the knot.
  6. Creating the Knot

    • The inside of the knot should look triangular.
    • Place your left index finger on the knot to hold it in place.
    • Wrap the wide end around the knot from right to left, grabbing it from behind.
    • Keep your index finger in place.
  7. Final Thread

    • Push the wide end through the tunnel created by your index finger, threading it down.
  8. Tightening the Knot

    • Adjust and tighten the knot by alternating pulls on the long and short ends.
    • Shape the knot as desired until it is a sharp, symmetrical triangle.
  9. Final Adjustment

    • Pull down the collar to complete the look.
    • Result: A full Windsor knot.
