What is a Patient Care Technician (PCT)?

  • Responsibilities:
    • Treat patients with respect and dignity
    • Response to patient and team needs
    • Perform EKG and phlebotomy
    • Measure and record vital signs (blood pressure, respiration, weight, pulse, blood sugar, intake/output)
    • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality
    • Listen effectively and communicate with patients, nurses, and doctors
    • Assist with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)

  • Eating

  • Dental care
  • Transferring
  • Walking or moving around
  • Dressing
  • Toileting

Training Program Details

  • Skills Covered: Basics of phlebotomy and EKG (no certification)
  • Exposure: Needles, blood, bodily fluids
  • Environment: High-acuity hospital requiring quick thinking
  • Required Traits: Friendly, compassionate, caring, positive, patient, non-judgmental
  • Shifts:
    • 8-hour day shift (7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.)
    • 12-hour day shift (7 a.m. - 7 p.m.)
    • 12-hour evening shift (11 a.m. - 11 p.m.)
    • 8-hour evening shift (3 p.m. - 11:30 p.m.)
    • 8-hour overnight shift (11 p.m. - 7:30 a.m.)

Participant Requirements

  • Desire to work with adults and children
  • Professional attitude
  • Intermediate or higher English speaking skills
  • Commitment to full-time work post-training
  • Flexible with 8-hour and 12-hour shifts, including holidays and alternate weekends
  • Full-time work at MGH after training
  • No heavy lifting restrictions
  • Employed at MGH for more than 6 months

Required Documents

  • High school diploma, GED, or foreign diploma
  • Valid passport, employment authorization, or permanent resident card
  • Social security card
  • Valid photo ID (MA ID, driver’s license, U.S. passport, etc.)
  • Proof of childcare or letters of support (if applicable)
  • Immunization records (including valid COVID vaccination)

Training Program Schedule

  • Duration: June 12th - July 28th (7 weeks, full-time)
  • Locations: JVS office (downtown Boston), Quincy College (Quincy, MA), and MGH
  • Costs: None (covered by MGH including training, materials, clinical placement)
  • Commitment: Full-time PCT work at MGH for at least one year post-training with a flexible schedule

  2. Complete simple reading and math activities
  3. Talk with Andrew at MGH about placement
  4. Submit notice of resignation to current unit upon program acceptance
  5. Complete the training program
  6. Begin working full-time as a PCT at MGH

Reading and Math Activities

  • Purpose: Ensure success in the program
  • Format: Timed activities (reading - 30 minutes, math - 25 minutes)
  • Instructions: Complete in one sitting, no calculators or external help allowed
