Ideal Gas Law and Piston Demonstration

Key Concepts

  • Ideal Gas Law: Describes the relationship between pressure, temperature, volume, and number of atoms in a gas.
  • Piston as a Demonstration Tool: Used to show how changes in these variables affect the state of gas.

Demonstration Details

Initial Conditions

  • Constant Temperature & Number of Atoms:
    • As volume decreases, pressure increases.
    • Caused by an increased rate of collisions against the cylinder walls.

Changing Conditions

  • Constant Volume & Number of Atoms:
    • Increasing Temperature:
      • Atoms gain increased kinetic energy.
      • Results in increased temperature and pressure.
    • Removing Heat:
      • Kinetic energy dissipates to surroundings.
      • System returns to original conditions.

Adding Atoms

  • Constant Pressure & Temperature:
    • Adding atoms to the cylinder increases the volume.
    • Doubling the number of atoms results in doubling the volume.
