Maguayan: Diyosa ng Underworld at Kultura

So this of course led to her evolution in myths as a goddess of the underworld pantheon. Pictured as a woman wearing grieving clothes, her face covered with dark cloth, and functions as a fairy woman who ferries the souls down to Sulad in her majestic balangay. Okay, dahil nga diba sinakop tayo ng mga negrito in the Nesmalay, Ang mode of transportation na ginamit ng ating mga malay people is yung balangay. So, her transformation is sometimes credited to the fact that in the creation stories, her only daughter Lidagat, which she gave birth by herself as compared to Lihangin, in which came out, of Captain's divine breath, has died of brokenheartedness. Ayan So, parang virgin dito si Maguaye. Like, in our present times, sa... Christian world, we have Mama Mary as the Virgin Mary of Christ. Yun yung symbolism or yung representation or the other image of other beliefs and systems. Magwayen was so grief-stricken that she even followed her daughter's souls to Sulad and accompanied her for a long time. So abandoning her duties as a sea goddess and instead delegating it to various water deities who took her and Lidagat's place in the world. Ayan, so gineve up niya yung responsibility niya as a sea goddess. Para maging goddess of the underworld and death. So, and instead took up the role as the fairy woman of souls to be near her daughter. Ayan Mas binaba niya yung role niya or yung responsibility niya. Instead of being the goddess of death, she became the fairy woman of souls. So, magwayan also had a role in the creation of the first man and woman. So, ito yung isang myth ng first man and woman. So, captain gave her the divine seed, which was a mix of captain's power and a piece of lisuga. So, he created and instructed magwayan to plant it and care for it. She did her work diligently and cared for the plant as if it was her own child. Maybe because... she misses Lidagat and her four grandchildren who were slain by Captain. She watered the plant, guided its growth and even talked to it to relieve her loneliness until one day the plant, which is very big bamboo plant, splits open and she was greeted by si Kalak and si Kalak, the first man and woman. So, diba? On our grade 7 Philippine Literature, ayan, English natin, may story tayong mababasa na ganito. Yan, the story of the first man and woman, kung saan, dun sa pinagbiyak na bambu, ay merong nakitang man and woman. So as the evolution of importance through Spanish influence, Maguayan was also highly venerated as Mother Goddess of the Sea and as a great provider of ancient Visayans all over the central islands of the Philippines. But when the Spanish came and introduced Christianity, the worship for Maguayan was inevitably replaced by the veneration of the Blessed Virgin Mary as the great Mother of Humanity and the Mother of Christ, of Jesus Christ. And in the end, she suffered. She suffered by same faith as Captain, whose worship disappeared as time went by. And yun na nga, sadly, siya ay hindi na minaworship and being replaced by the Blessed Virgin Mary as per Christianity being introduced to us by the Spaniards. So, yun, hanggang doon na lamang ang existence or yung belief ni Maguayan mula sa mga Visayan. people. Her fame, however, endured the test of time and is very much alive in the stories of the Visayan people and eventually she became one of the popular gods of the Philippines who originated from Visayas that was known all over the Asia just like Captain and eventually word wild. Ayan, so she is also known of the few female deities who were taught to have everlasting control of the sea. Since the sea is very much a man's world, if you compare it to the mythological traditions all over the world. So, dito nga ay parang ikinatutuwa ng ibang mga people or ibang citizens or races dahil si Maguayan, siya lang yung nakapag-control, siya lang yung nakapag-take ng responsibility ng dagat yan. So, dito pinatunayan na wala sa gender identity yung... pag-take responsibility ng ating mga states of earth. Ayan So, yun nga. So, Maguayan had many magic shells. So, this is a fun trivia about Maguayan as the first generation of the gods, which later on replaced by the Blessed Virgin Mary. So, Maguayan had many magic shells when she was a sea goddess. When the dagat died and she turned into a goddess fairy woman. She took that part of the ocean and buried it deep in the Panay Islands so that her treasures would remain safe. Today, there is body of water called Tinagong Lidagat in Panay. It is a sea that looks like a lake and it sits atop the high mountains bordering I think Iloilo and Antique. Ayan So, and there are fishes there that That cannot be seen in a normal sea. And when you taste it, the water is salty and it is indeed sea water. So, yun yung iniwang alaalar simbolism ng mga Visayan people to be offered kay Maguayan para hindi siya totally makalimutan. Hindi man siya maphrase or maworship today, siya naman ay naaalala natin sa mga mythologies and myths like this. Mama Yen may have been the ruler of the sea but it was said that she was always contested. Okay, so Bakunawa was won and also by other giants of the deep. She said to keep a budyong, a conch shell, kabibe that has magical properties to ward off these monsters. So narinig natin sa Tagalog mythology or Bricolano mythology na si Bakunawa ay isang sea serpent na nakatira sa dagat wherein kinakain niya yung mga buwan. Nagmumukbang siya ng mga buwan. And then whenever she was challenged, she would blow it three times and she would change her shape into something much more bigger to defeat their enemies. So Bakunawa tried to steal this magical conch but it turned out that if others try to steal it, it renders itself immovable. So dito si Bakunawa yung nag-introduce ng theft. or yung pagnanakaw sa ating origin story or sa origin ng theft. So, for this part, we've known Mag-Nayen, Mag-Wayen. Nakakalala natin si Mag-Wayen, yung contribution niya on bakit nga ba siya tinaguri ang goddess of the sea and the death. So, for our next video, we will... We will be proceeding sa ating second generation gods at meron din tayong dalawa doon. So, sino-sino nga ba sila? So, maybe we have the clue. Siya na yung God of the Wind and the son of Captain and he later married Lidagat and had four children. Thank you for listening.
