Overview of Cranial Nerves

This lecture provides a recap of cranial nerves, exploring their origins, structures supplied, fiber types, functions, sensory/motor/both classifications, and their passage through the skull.

Cranial Nerve I: Olfactory Nerve

  • Location: Roof of the nasal cavity (olfactory mucosa)
  • Structures Supplied: Nasal cavity
  • Fibers: Special Visceral Afferent (SVA)
  • Function: Smell
  • Classification: Sensory
  • Pathway: Through olfactory foramina of cribriform plate of ethmoid bone

Cranial Nerve II: Optic Nerve

  • Origin: Retina
  • Structures Supplied: Photoreceptors (rods, cones) in retina
  • Fibers: Special Sensory Afferent (SSA)
  • Function: Vision
  • Classification: Sensory
  • Pathway: Through optic canal

Cranial Nerve III: Oculomotor Nerve

  • Origin: Midbrain
  • Structures Supplied: Extraocular muscles (superior rectus, inferior rectus, inferior oblique, medial rectus, levator palpebrae superioris), pupil (sphincter pupillae), ciliary muscle
  • Fibers: General Somatic Efferent (GSE), General Visceral Efferent (GVE)
  • Function: Eye movement, eyelid movement, pupil constriction, accommodation
  • Classification: Motor
  • Pathway: Through superior orbital fissure

Cranial Nerve IV: Trochlear Nerve

  • Origin: Midbrain, level of inferior colliculus
  • Structures Supplied: Superior oblique muscle
  • Fibers: General Somatic Efferent (GSE)
  • Function: Eye movement (depresses and laterally rotates the eye)
  • Classification: Motor
  • Pathway: Through superior orbital fissure

Cranial Nerve V: Trigeminal Nerve

  • Origin: Pons, with nuclei in midbrain, pons, medulla, and trigeminal ganglion
  • Structures Supplied: Facial skin, mucous membranes, muscles of mastication, tensor tympani, tensor veli palatini, etc.
  • Fibers: Special Visceral Efferent (SVE), General Somatic Afferent (GSA)
  • Function: Sensation (touch, pain, temperature), mastication
  • Classification: Both
  • Pathways: V1 - superior orbital fissure, V2 - foramen rotundum, V3 - foramen ovale

Cranial Nerve VI: Abducens Nerve

  • Origin: Pons
  • Structures Supplied: Lateral rectus muscle
  • Fibers: General Somatic Efferent (GSE)
  • Function: Eye movement (lateral rotation)
  • Classification: Motor
  • Pathway: Through superior orbital fissure

Cranial Nerve VII: Facial Nerve

  • Origin: Pons
  • Structures Supplied: Muscles of facial expression, stapedius, digastric muscles, stylohyoid, glands (lacrimal, nasal, palatine), anterior 2/3 of tongue, ear
  • Fibers: Special Visceral Efferent (SVE), General Visceral Efferent (GVE), Special Visceral Afferent (SVA), General Somatic Afferent (GSA)
  • Function: Facial expression, secretion, taste, sensation
  • Classification: Both
  • Pathways: Through internal acoustic meatus and stylomastoid foramen

Cranial Nerve VIII: Vestibulocochlear Nerve

  • Origin: Pons-medulla junction
  • Structures Supplied: Vestibule, semicircular canals, cochlea
  • Fibers: Special Sensory Afferent (SSA)
  • Function: Balance (static and dynamic equilibrium), hearing
  • Classification: Primarily Sensory (some motor fibers)
  • Pathway: Through internal acoustic meatus

Cranial Nerve IX: Glossopharyngeal Nerve

  • Origin: Medulla
  • Structures Supplied: Stylopharyngeus, parotid gland, carotid sinus/body, tongue, pharynx, soft palate, ear
  • Fibers: Special Visceral Efferent (SVE), General Visceral Afferent (GVA), General Somatic Afferent (GSA), General Visceral Efferent (GVE)
  • Function: Elevates pharynx, taste, sensory from tongue, pharynx, BP regulation
  • Classification: Both
  • Pathway: Through jugular foramen

Cranial Nerve X: Vagus Nerve

  • Origin: Medulla
  • Structures Supplied: Pharynx, larynx, thoracic and abdominal viscera, ear
  • Fibers: General Visceral Efferent (GVE), Special Visceral Afferent (SVA), General Somatic Afferent (GSA), General Visceral Afferent (GVA)
  • Function: Parasympathetic regulation, taste, sensory, motor involvement in pharynx/larynx
  • Classification: Both
  • Pathway: Through jugular foramen

Cranial Nerve XI: Accessory Nerve

  • Origin: Medulla (cranial part), cervical spinal cord (spinal part)
  • Structures Supplied: Sternocleidomastoid, trapezius
  • Fibers: General Somatic Efferent (GSE), some Special Visceral Efferent (SVE)
  • Function: Neck movement, scapula elevation/retraction
  • Classification: Motor
  • Pathways: Spinal part through foramen magnum, both parts through jugular foramen
