I'm Caroline, a Senior Growth Marketing Manager at Bark, a parental controls company. Today I'm going to show you two different tools that can help you protect your child while they use their iPhone. Apple Screen Time and Bark are our two recommendations.
Apple Screen Time comes built in and is free, and Bark is a comprehensive tool with many powerful features. Part 1, Apple Screen Time. To get the most out of Apple's parental controls, we recommend updating to the latest software version, which you can find in the settings on your child's phone.
You can also set up family sharing if your child has more than one device, so that all the settings you make will transfer. This also lets you manage settings remotely. Keep in mind though, the Apple Screen Time works best when both you and your child have Apple devices.
From your child's phone, tap Settings and then Screen Time. This is where you'll be able to add parental control settings. First, set a passcode that only you know so your changes will be locked. Now you can get started. Let's go through what you can do.
Downtime. Scheduling downtime means the only apps you choose to allow at a certain time will be available. This is a good option for encouraging focus or rest.
App limits. Here you can choose how much time your child can spend on different apps. Communication limits. This lets you manage who your child can text, FaceTime, and call. Content and privacy restrictions.
Here's where you do all the blocking from apps and iTunes purchases to multiplayer games and screen recordings. When it comes to website blocking, though, you only have three options. Unrestricted access, limited adult websites, and allowed websites only.
Part 2. Bark. Bark is the perfect choice for blended tech families. That is, families in which a parent has an Android device and children have iPhones.
But all families are great candidates for BARC because of the additional parental control features we offer. After you download the BARC Parent app, follow the on-screen instructions to get started. Here's an overview of what all BARC can do. Screen time.
BARC has screen time features you won't find anywhere else. From the dashboard, tap Screen Time. Here, you'll find our approach to creating a healthy balance centers on the idea that different times of the day call for different screen time rules.
For example, when your kid is in school, you can block access to everything but educational websites. At bedtime, you can only allow apps that help them wind down for the evening. And because all kids deserve to blow off a little steam, you can designate free time hours just for the fun stuff. Blocking. From the dashboard, tap screen time, then tap rules, then default rules.
This is where our world-class web blocker lets you select exactly which websites and apps your child can access on their devices. You can block specific sites or even whole categories like streaming services, online gaming, sexual content, and more. Content monitoring.
From the dashboard, tap monitoring. Here's where you'll connect your child's device and accounts to Bark. Our advanced technology can then scan for potential dangers like bullying, online predators, depression, sexual content, and more. If we find something concerning, BARC sends you an alert so you can check in and make sure everything is okay.
Content monitoring not only helps keep your child safe, it also gives you greater insight into their world and what it's like to grow up in the digital age. Location alerts. BARC also helps you keep up with your kids no matter where they roam.
