FLASH - Lesson Three, Reproductive System Option 2

Do Now Activity

  • Task: In Google Classroom, list all the parts of the human reproductive system you remember.

Agenda

  • Objectives:
    • Name parts of the human reproductive system.
    • Describe the path of an egg during the menstrual cycle.
    • Describe the path of sperm during ejaculation.
    • Recognize the wide range of normal anatomy.
    • Name the three main components of the sexual response.

Purpose

  • Reproductive System:
    • Involves body parts for starting a pregnancy.
    • Involves egg and sperm joining through vaginal sex, sperm donation, or medical technology.
  • Sexual Response System:
    • Involves body parts responsible for sexual feelings.

Reproduction

  • Process where a single cell duplicates genetic material.
  • Involves two special cells: sperm (male) and egg (female).
  • Cells join through fertilization to form a zygote.
  • Ensures perpetuation of the human species.

Male Reproductive System

  • Parts: Cowper’s Gland, Epididymis, Penis, Prostate Gland, Scrotum, Seminal Vesicles, Testicle, Urethra, Vas Deferens.
    1. Testicles
      • Primary male sex organ.
      • Produce sperm and male hormones.
      • Contain coiled tubes for sperm production.
    2. Scrotum
      • Holds testes.
      • Regulates temperature for sperm production.
    3. Epididymis
      • Stores mature sperm.
    4. Vas Deferens
      • Long tubes for sperm travel.
    5. Seminal Vesicle
      • Adds seminal fluid to semen.
    6. Prostate Gland
      • Secretes fluid to activate sperm.
    7. Cowper’s Gland
      • Secretes mucus for lubrication.
    8. Urethra
      • Carries urine and semen outside the body.
    9. Penis
      • Contains sponge-like tissue that becomes erect during arousal.

Female Reproductive System

  • Parts: Cervix, Glans of Clitoris, Fallopian Tubes, Fimbria, Ovary, Shaft of Clitoris, Uterus, Vagina.
    1. Ovary
      • Produces ova and female hormones.
    2. Fimbria
      • Guides ovum into fallopian tubes.
    3. Fallopian Tubes
      • Site of fertilization.
    4. Uterus
      • Where fertilized egg implants and fetus develops.
    5. Cervix
      • Connects vagina and uterus.
    6. Vagina
      • Passageway for menstrual fluid and childbirth.
    7. Glans and Shaft of Clitoris
      • Provides sensation.

Egg Lifetime

  • Fetal life: 6-7 million eggs.
  • Birth: ~1 million eggs.
  • Puberty: ~300,000 eggs remain.
  • Reproductive lifetime: 300-400 eggs ovulated.

Sexual Response System

  • Components: Emotions, brain, hormones, senses, entire body.
  • Aspects:
    1. Desire: Wanting sexual closeness.
    2. Arousal: Sexual excitement.
    3. Release: Reduction of sexual tension.

Homework

  • Choose one of two assignments: Individual or Family.
  • Review Questions:
    • Ovaries and testicles produce sex cells and hormones.
    • Sperm and egg are both sex cells needed for reproduction.
    • Fallopian tubes and vas deferens are pathways for egg and sperm.
    • Penis and clitoris have a shaft and glans, become erect, and are sensitive.
