Understanding Oxygen Flow Meters and Their Connections

Notes on Oxygen Flow Meters and Connections

Overview

  • Flow Meters: Devices delivering oxygen, connecting to a 50 psi hookup in hospital walls.
  • Chemtron Hookup: Technical term for the back connection piece.
  • Oxygen Adapter ("Christmas Tree"): Screws onto flow meter; oxygen devices attach here.

Connection Process

  • Wall Connection:
    • Pressurized gas system with two holes: large (oxygen outlet) and small (latch).
    • Insert flow meter by aligning and pressing firmly.
  • Operation:
    • Turn knob counterclockwise to open valve and deliver oxygen.
    • Standard flow rates: 1 to 15 L/min; "flush" mode delivers up to 40 L/min.

Measuring Oxygen Flow

  • Ball Indicator: Measure flow rate by the center of the ball aligning with marked lines.
  • Compensated Thorp Tubes: Technical term for flow meters with compensation for back pressure.
  • Flow Interruption: If flow stops (e.g., from a pinched tube), the ball drops, indicating no flow.

Emergency Situations

  • Without a Christmas Tree:
    • Emergency devices can connect directly to flow meter threads.
    • No need to find a Christmas tree in urgent situations.

Detaching Flow Meters

  • Removal:
    • Push button on top to release.
    • Control the flow meter to prevent it from falling.

Safety Considerations

  • Color Coding: Green indicates oxygen; ensure correct hookup.
  • Medical Air and Vacuum: Don't connect oxygen flow meters to air or vacuum outlets.
  • F2 Delivery: Ensure oxygen, not medical air, is delivered to patients.

Important Notes

  • Ensure a secure connection to prevent dislodging or incorrect gas delivery.
  • Always verify gas type and pressure settings before use.
