a cruise on Symphony Of The Seas never been on a cruise and why not go on the biggest ship in the world hits all the high notes oh that was [Music] amazing but for the crew there's no room for letting your guard down it also comes with high stakes I got to make sure that the performers are you feel like you're trying to thread the needle and high expectations the choreography of it is super intricate I want to make sure that everything is really perfect we have four guests missing if they're not here we [Music] sail it's the biggest cruise ship in history 362 M long 66 M wide and 72 and half M High Symphony Of The Seas has features that even rival the biggest resorts on land I'm actually looking forward to a lot of the shows like the aqua Show the ice show and then of course the ports people are really amazed because there's things on board they've never seen anywhere else more than 2700 State rooms water parks Broadway style performances spas and gyms an ice ring and 23 different restaurants it would be hard to miss the Symphony of the Seas being the largest cruise ship in the [Music] world for Captain Rick Sullivan and we're going to go manual steering manual steering okay take over the wheel hard support the technology that's being used is the latest the greatest being the skipper of this modern masterpiece is a Quantum Leap from the cargo vessels he sailed on North America's Great Lakes four decades ago these ships handle better than the smaller ships that are half the size you think Titanic was big it's not even close by comparison symphony is twice as tall twice as wide and almost 100 m longer and that adds up to a ship that's five times the size of that legendary Titan the price tag was $1.5 billion but I also think we've got the most amazing crew on board as well over the next seven days Symphony Of The Seas will sail from Barcelona to the Spanish island of mayorca and the French Port of mar then it's off to Italy with a stop in chibia outside of Rome and a visit to Naples after that there's a full day at Sea sailing back to Barcelona it's 4:30 a.m. Captain Sullivan is bringing the gigantic ship through a narrow channel into the port of Barcelona to start the cruise 010 to Port a tugboat P Port B speeds 6.35 and dropping and we can move over to the starboard side starboard side to for thank you docking this ship is not for the faint of heart it's as big as an aircraft carrier 10 m to go ahead 10 m to come [Music] ahead position in position in position in position the bridge Cru stands down welcome to Spain and 2 hours later the work ramps up for the rest of the ship staff today is turnaround day of Whirlwind for hotel director januca Carelli welcome aboard how are you hello hello today is the day it's my busiest day million things in my head most of last week's passengers disembark and 40 500 new guests start to board hello hello how's the gangway doing everything is okay I just checked with a pier right now yeah the numbers are good on all systems up are up so far no concerns at the moment januca obsesses with every detail of the guest experience today is all about check-in so quite a lot of actions today that I need to juggle balls in the air making sure everything is Flawless making sure all the food Outlets are ready hey Chef how are you everybody ready State rooms we need to turn that very quickly the first impression especially today is very important so I want to make sure that everything is really perfect and all the details are attended to that's going to be their home for the next 7 days so we want them to feel at home home for one lucky family will be the ultimate family Suite of course with all the amenities this room will take um a little longer to inspect it even comes with a dedicated concierge this in the room is our Cinema room up in the master bedroom as you can see the fun never stops in the suite through a rabbit door and then slide back down woo looks like we're ready to go on the pier Provisions manager Ola Roswell has less than 8 hours to load a city's worth of food and drink he give you the paperwork already we have normally about five full trailers of fruits and vegetables and another two trucks with local goods and a couple of small ones so about 80 to 100 tons today enough for everyone on the weekl long cruise including 2200 crew 7,700 people uh that need to be fed three times a day at least plus Ola has to juggle the port's security requirements we just need a k9 to check it for for explosives in all the pallets once they say it's clear then that's where when we got and the ship's health and safety standards his team's thermometers are their most important tools it comes all temperature control 41° the weak supplies include 60,000 eggs 400 L of chocolate ice cream 2300 fresh oysters and 450 cases of champagne everything as you can see comes on wooden pallets and in the fridges we don't keep any wood pallets so everything has to re be repacked from the wood andto the steel pallets and all that has to be done by hand this is the hardest part because the fruits are very heavy the Watermelons are very heavy one box is coming like 65 lb 70 lb and it's very hard to lift one person to pack it in Ste and we are getting almost 5 to six pet of watermelons and uh pineapples around four pets some items will spoil if they're not refrigerated right away the oyers once they come on board we take it down right away to the box and they store it on the de one Jason all good yep next door in cold storage for tomorrow I'm going to need about 300 or 400 of this Executive Chef Lee Goble is carefully checking the produce we going to do some grilled Tomatoes we're going to do some um some uh grilled peppers for that so that's why just make sure we got enough on that he's reviewing the ingredients and planning ahead for his culinary team I'm cooking about 30,000 meals a day we got to be organized but I'm going to look and see where we've been in the past ingredient wise or menu wise what a big seller so I can predict and I'll have Those portions ready while Chef Lee Designs the menus Captain Sullivan Ready's for departure ready ready butons go all syy of the SE for and after let go all lines and we're going to start our swing into the base four nuts speed four nuts four nuts the enormous ship needs to turn around to leave the harbor I'll be using a combination of uh aipods and thrusters to turn the vessel symphony's 3 azipod propeller units can pivot independently up to 360° in this case drawing the stern to Port meanwhile four thrusters muscle the bow in the opposite direction to rotate the massive vessel in place we turn on a dime but that I guess is a very large dime all the pods are rotating to 30° in just 15 minutes time Symphony Of The Seas swings 180° 188 I've stopped thrusting with the bow thrusters then it heads out to sea 4 and 1/2 knots ahead the skies are clear and the party is just warming up but the next morning approaching the first Port of Call there's a storm on the horizon just after 6: a.m. Captain Rick Sullivan and his Bridge officers are scanning the waters but the rain makes it harder to see in the dark essentially we're looking for anything that might be floating on the water after leaving Barcelona last night the world's largest cruise ship is approaching the smallest Harbor on its Voyage Palama de mayorca there's no room for letting your guard down not when small fishing boats stray into symphony's path sound our loud horn which will wake them up of course there's so many lights on because of the hotel side of the ship but we still have to exhibit navigation lights as well you are now 40 m port side of track keep an eye on the Sailing Boat over there sailboats altering course just keep your speed up so you don't have less than 5 knots entering to enter the harbor Captain Sullivan makes a slow turn between the break Waters then head straight to the Rain soak Dock 6 me Roger passing the corner of the Pier 60 thank you 20 M to come ahead the ship's bow thrusters push Symphony sideways Roger we're in position with the lines tied excursions manager Tiana Mich is immediately on the pier hi folks morning so you will need to get the shuttle ticket get the shuttle here behind you 9 and 10 this way today's a juggling act the rain this morning put a damper on many of the guests plans to head to the beach so my guys are trying to help and to speech them to do city tours or something Nick Nick Tiana do you have update for number 14 what was the final but then sun came out so these couple of guests this morning who decide not to go to the beach will be disappointed because they decide to change their mind on the island of mayorca you can get almost anywhere in about an hour some will visit the city of Palama but the real attraction is the beaches and there's none better than ileta a secluded Cove that's a little taste of paradise it even offers a view of the ship meanwhile back on Symphony Hotel operations don't stop two decks below the pier executive housekeeper Henrik Archer's laundry team is coping with an avalanche of towels and linens our smallest workload is during the week we car we do about 15,000 kilos and a turn around there we're doing over 30,000 kilos it's one heck of a launder mat capable of washing drying and even folding automatically on a massive scale every day we go through around uh 5,000 shets we do around 20,000 T every day so it's a US operation we running even when the ship isn't moving the hotel facilities demand serious power from chief engineer St Erikson we on average using about 11,000 kilow per hour for the hotel lot but that also includes all the auxiliaries the service power um air conditioning ventilation systems to deliver that load they only need one of the ship six diesel electric generators the rest of symphony's power capacity is dedicated to propulsion in terms of the total capacity we having we can probably power a a little city of about 880,000 people the big job today is cleaning out the air conditioning unit to optimize the efficiency of the chillo we are now tube cleaning as we call it as the AC's condenser unit heats up seawater passes through all of these tubes to cool it down but over time debris builds up and the chief wants those tubes to be clean as a whistle he's running a rotating brush through a water pressured host back and forth in order to clean the tubes inside the condenser while the engineers work to keep the ship cool things are pretty chill for the guests who remained aboard there's plenty to enjoy all over the ship it starts above the bridge with an elegant Solarium there's a skating rink with Ice shows the Royal prominade for shopping and snacks Central Park an open air [Music] Atrium further toward the stern the the boardwalk complete with Carousel and an aquatheater but the sun has drawn everyone outside climbing up the rock wall slipping down one of the three water slides or ziplining is this your first time uh yes perfect okay so if you go on your tip toes for me all the way up perfect hi above the boardwalk the zip line is where it's on level 16 of the ship 10 levels up we have a harness that goes on full body harness around the legs and their chest everything like that and then we have our safety lines so at all times are clipped in at no point are they unclipped and no point can they like step out of where we are right now take a big step forward there we go but yeah a lot of the time people come they just step up and they go and it's like a take off the pocket list oh that was amazing 12 decks below the zip line professional skater Lexi verol and her team are hard at work rehearsing in the ice theater real ice it is real ice the ice rink is about a sixth of the size of a normal rink so we have to adjust everything accordingly even the ice resurfacing equipment has to adjust the smallest ambon in the world got tiny little one they'll uh scrape it and they have to shovel the snow up and then they'll flood the rink but it's just a crazy concept of having a rink here almost as crazy as using a flock of tiny drones in the ice show it's probably only going to last for about 3 minutes but the wow factor for the gas just like they they don't expect to see it Outdoors drones like the ship use the global positioning system or GPS to navigate the drones are now fitting off of these antennas and that's where they're getting their rding from but GPS doesn't work inside so the stage crew uses antennas to create an indoor positioning system within the theater we have two on the floor we have them up in the rig and there's about 40 of them in total so we created a system in a box they carefully calibrate All 48 drones with the system signaling system before tonight's [Music] show by 3:30 everyone is supposed to be back aboard for departure but right now we have four guest missing unfortunately it's all aboard time and two couples missing right now we cannot make contact with the with the security Bridge we copy it four guest outstanding no children on board so Pilot's on board pilot onard call for engines 30 minutes later Captain Sullivan has a schedule to keep with or without the stragglers they were supposed to be back on board at 3:30 okay thank you so at 4:00 if they're not here we sail that was 30 minutes grace period for the four tardy passengers this relaxing day is going to end with a stressful surprise unfortunately looks like we're going to have to leave these four guests behind it's a tight R to the next Port of coal it's 400 p.m. in Pama de mayorca Spain four passengers are missing for departure they had Grace Spirit everyone else was aboard 30 minutes ago given the ship's tight schedule Captain Rick Sullivan has no choice but to leave for the next Port the company policy is a ship sales on time it's like an airplane you go to the airport late and they've closed the gate that's it we will assist them in making arrangements to get to the next Port of call and we'll be waiting for them there we are here to V we're clear to sell from Pama to mayorca the Ship Sails through the night at 19 knots or 35 kmph to make the morning arrival in Marseilles with hazy sunshine gracing the hills of provance Captain Sullivan and local pilot Stefan Rivier prepare to enter between the breakwaters no more than 5 knots is uh five five and a half um passing the corner of our Pier will be down to four knots and then slowing down from there I'll do the maneuver the ship is 66 M wide and there's only 65 M clearance on either side so I suggest you to maintain Vel closer to the red and to the green taking manual control of the ship's azipod propeller units the captain will pivot the stern of the ship about 45° to starboard then he's going to thread the world's biggest cruise ship through a 200 m wide gap for 1 and 1 12 km to come alongside the pier we're still well inside the Turning Circle I'm bringing the stern up to the course line before I start to increase the speed speed 4.7 and I said no more than four knots passing the corners yeah after 5 minutes and we're in a good position two hours after docking some of the ship's guests are pedalling around Sita pance in the countryside Northwest of marsill it's not easy Bing is not the easiest but it's been fun hopefully it'll be downhill the rest of the way yes but it's super fun because we we've never been to France so this is exciting the the area is famous for cheese olive oil seon de provon soap and most welcome to this group wine Ros all day the views were beautiful it was just the uphill was that's why the wi we are so excited thank you so much welcome cheers get into your position over here we're going to do this associate choreographer Jacob to is taking advantage of a nearly empty Royal prominade on Deck five to teach a new routine to some new team members turn right right right right right step on your right pivot turn step back on your left step back on your right and you're going to flip your hair shoulder shoulder swing to the right he's preparing the entire entertainment team for the parade that celebrates the end of the crew we're having a rehearsal for the parade it's going on to be on the C Day the cast includes dancers divers skaters and musicians there this one this one some of whom haven't yet learned all the steps it's a little rough right now but we're getting there we're going to it's going to be amazing full costume in Just 4 days time flip your hair we nailed it [Applause] by 6 p.m. everyone is back aboard including the guests who missed the ship in Palma Symphony Of The Seas leaves the port of maray on time the spotlight now turns to the Ice Theater starting with a computer programmed swarm of drones the choreography of it is just like ours it's super incate the indoor positioning system orients the synchronized aircraft in the theater so they don't crash into the walls or each other they all fly together and then they go around and come back together and it's really cool the way they move then ice Captain Lexi verol and her team of pro skaters squeeze a big show into the tiny rink [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] ladies and gentlemen giveing up the stars of T show the night's not over there's a party in the Royal prominade 2 [Music] 1 but it's no party on the bridge the next morning the harbor pilot is late and until he shows up Symphony Of The Seas is going [Music] nowhere it's early morning on day four Symphony Of The Seas is nearing the busy Italian port of chiia the gateway to Rome our speak is still coming down you want to start thrusters yep I was just thinking cuz he's got hard over there so he's having trouble steering we 5 m Port Captain Rick Sullivan is stuck waiting for the local Harbor pilot we've slowed down to allow the ship ahead of us to move into the port the pilot arrived 26 minutes late it could affect the folks who are disembarking today the sunrise in chiia is spectacular but the delay in arriving means the rest of the morning will be frantic green condition Condition it's usually a busy morning for them dispatching but at least they've got a little heads up everybody will go have a great day in r on the pier this way number one call the bus for next two minutes and then if guys don't show up we're going to send the bus the excursions team is scrambling to get tours to Rome out as fast as possible lots of people are coming to cruise just to see Rome it's the busiest Excursion day of the cruise okay let me just double check today we have 30 buses uh it's about 1200 guests that's 1,200 guests for Tiana's team plus another 2,000 making their way to Rome on their own [Music] okay you have to really run because bus is waiting just for you you have to really run it's going to be quite a challenge as as you can see everybody are coming at the same time follow me this way please this way this way thank you Rome is more than an hour away by bus or train the captain will wait for any passengers delayed on Tiana's tours but the other guests will have to get back on time on their own it's a long day to travel to bring them back all on time morning gentlemen morning everything okay the stop in Port gives Hotel manager Jan Luca cornelli time to make another Mad Dash around the ship you okay you want to come with me Robert let's go first task checking in on his hotel staff of more than 2,000 so we had a few of our crew going on medical this morning correct we did we had uh six people going up this morning for um medical check so they're off and gone we had crew signing on today as well a number of crew members are duee to rotate on and off the ship today from all over the world I saw this email about the the typhoon in the Philippines how's that uh impacting our crew coming from the Philippines well we'll find out today we've got 25 crew that are supposed to sign off in 20 they supposed to come beautiful how's the app going so far so good any uh major issues this week here this is how I see word frictions and take action while the hotel director troubleshoots a team of performers rehearses at the aquatheater there's a lot of diving dancing like a lot of things going on at the same time tonight's Outdoor Show is demanding for everyone so we need to be careful of where we stand underwater so if there's diving happening we need to make sure that we hug the walls they even have underwater support we've got a little trick uh down there there's actually scuba divers that are there to help us we have a system with Regulators who come breathe under water for a long period of time some of the riskiest acts take place high above the audience world champion High diver sesily Carlton practices on a 10 m platform but tonight she'll perform a showstopper from a tiny platform 17 m above the small pool when you look down you feel like you're trying to thread the needle we're diving from 55 ft into 14 ft of water it's by far one of the scariest high dives I've done and I've done quite a few high dives in different places around the world we're in the dark already cuz we do our shows at night plus the water that surrounds the ship can affect the water aboard the ship once waves start hitting the ship it causes our pool to start losing a little bit of water you know it may not seem like a lot but when I'm doing a high dive and I look down and I see that there's 14 ft of water and then I hit the water and I could be diving into 12 ft also Making a Splash today the famous sites located all around [Music] Rome hey everyone's here bye early evening all the guests are back from visiting the Eternal City and they've worked up an appetite okay how's it look yeah okay good so Executive Chef Lee goal is reviewing all of the dishes for the main dining room this is that last chance that you're going to get we're going to open for service in like 30 minutes from now so it's just a recap you ready you're first let's go Showtime each plate has to meet with his approval next we have our season salad and Shri c chicken and mushroom pie topped with a crusted puff pastry or fish of the day also with mashed potato broccoli and string bean cherry tomato looking good it's just about pulling the dishes together and just to check the color and the height of the dishes and thenan people eat with their eyes right I just want to make sure that the configuration on the plate looks good and that the garnish looks good and it all works together we're all good for service yeah soon The Galley ramps up like a well-oiled machine we've done the tasting so we've laid out all the dishes we know they're complete I'm looking now just to make sure that the batches are cooked we're going to do about 5,000 Ms tonight I think the steak is going to be a big one this evening cooking and serving is nonstop how many you going to serve tonight about 4 100 about 400 yeah nice caramelization there two backto back dinner seatings for up to 2600 guests won't slow down until 11:00 p.m. for the next 4 or 5 hours Full Throttle and people are going to have to concentrate because the first dish and the last dish has got to look identical hey I'm on my way by 9:00 Cruise director Bobby Brown has a lot on his plate hero was du to go at 9 and du to go at 11: but um we're picking up with a little bit of movement and that's why I'm swinging on over there's a problem in the aquatheater and no one knows if the show will go on the wind speeds picked top and we didn't have movement on the ship we don't feel the movement here but we got movement in the pool slashing water in the pool could pose a dangerous risk for the aqua Show High divers thought to make a safety call I got to make sure that the performers are safe it's showtime in the aqua theater but choppy water is threatening the safety of the high divers hero okay you're going to come with me Cruise director Bobby Brown heads backstage to consult with the performers your theater on land doesn't move even modest crosswinds find a lot of sail area on the side of this Mighty cruise ship tonight there's a crosswind of 30 knots or 55 kmph but it's the way the winds are churning up the sea that is the problem those waves are causing the ship to roll very slightly the water in the pool magnifies that movement even with a barrier wall do designed to reduce the sloshing and that poses a terrible risk for the high divers if we get a movement just when it's time to do that dive your 15 ft could become 12 ft and we are at complete [Applause] risk Bobby has no choice for the safety of our performance this evening and the forecast over the next hour the decision has been taken that tonight's performance will be postponed and I do apologize cuz I know that you're here and you want to see a full show that was a very tough decision to make tonight because we have 800 guests sitting there in the atheer ready for the show the Army ons everything's there the pool would sit very calm and then all of a sudden we would lose some water and the water comes out over the side but now I've got to think of the performance and the safety also I want to give the guest it's the best show I can give them Bobby can only hope for calmer nights to come we already got the guest services team now asking from guests when we're going to reschedule the show perfect thank you very much appreciate it thank you [Music] bye-bye by 6:00 a.m. on day five of the Mediterranean Cruise Symphony Of The Seas is backing into the birth in the port of Naples the last stop in Italy keep on heaving the spring he up once the moing lines are secured SL first it's the guest's last opportunity to step off the ship for a little local flavor from Naples there's no end of sites to visit from Mount vvus and the ruins of Pompei to the serrento peninsula and the island of Capri but for passengers obsessed with food there's also a Hidden Gem outside sarento one of the pioneers of the farm totable Trend the elegant Inn and Restaurant of Don Alonso yako we use only our oliv soil olives are like grape you must know everything of your wiers I say you have to talk with the trees you have to talk with the ingredients if you never talk then never give you the best that they can the Master Chef and organic farmer is passionate about all the ingredients he uses like the lemons and tomatoes this is a very special quality Pomodoro am Maran this is very good for sauses tomatoes for us that we live in Mediterranean is one of the most uh things that use everyone doesn't this look amazing the restaurant is an irresistible destination for two Foodies Susan and Scott Kenny we're very excited beautiful now in Gourmet Heaven oh it's incredible any better okay we're spoiled that is amazing wow I don't know that there are words to describe that experience when we came here on this trip we really wanted to experience the culture and the food and meet the people and drink the wine and it was just amazing as the day in Naples wraps up some enjoy a tail on the outside decks While others raise a glass on the rising tide it's an elevator bar in the engine control room connecting starboard as chief engineer Ste Erikson's crew Ready's three engines for departure hello good afternoon so we have one big engine and two small online once the ship is set to leave they hand engine control back to the bridge prop is connected we'll give you control now and you can start the throw stairs whenever you need it okay good thank you transferring control to the [Music] bridge okay propulsion on the bridge Captain Sullivan will soon have his ship at cruising speed cast off and heaving cast off and heaving on the St [Music] Symphony Of The Seas now heads to Sea for a 33-hour sale threading the channel between the islands of Corsica and Sardinia and cruising directly to Barcelona with all the passengers on board for the next day and a half every location promises to be busy starting tonight in the aqua theater where High diver cesal and the other performers are hoping to get the green light for their eagerly awaited rescheduled show but that will only happen if the Seas stay calm it's the final leg of the journey for Symphony Of The Seas tonight is a go for the rescheduled performance of hero the aqua Show to be able to bring the audience to a different world for like 45 minutes to an hour for me that's the most like fulfilling [Music] part it's a Japanese inspired show fused with hip-hop featuring Synchro swimmers combat dance acrobatic Slackline performers 2 3 4 bring it and 17 m above the water it's right in the center is the best place for me it's the safest a breathtaking plunge from cesy Carlton you're going 50 m an hour when you hit the water oh [Music] yeah for the widey audience the show is worth the wait all [Music] [Applause] right the last day of the cruise means a full day at se today is all about activities we have shows we have activities by the pool [Applause] we're constantly providing different activities for whatever you want to do today with every part of the ship humming pools Hotel facilities and propulsion power use is at Peak demand but the chief wants to meet that need as efficiently as possible when we are at Sea we could run all the engines and run up to about 24 knots it's a high speed but not very economical so the best speed for us to run at is about 18 to 19 knots that's when we are kind of having the highest speed for the least amount of power used the ship's new Hull design has made a huge energy saving difference the reshaped bulbous bow helps it cut better through choppy Seas new low friction paint reduces drag through the water and between the bow and midship thousands of tiny holes produce micro bubbles that create a thin air cushion enabling the hull to ride on air rather than water with far less resistance there's plenty of energy on the Royal prominade as the parade gets underway Pirates Vikings a Queen of the Seas and more most have mastered the dance steps some are even driving [Music] Segways the sea day gives all the guests the opportunity to find their own slice of paradise on board the [Music] ship it also offers the chance for them to mingle with the officers oh you were down in the uh Captain's Corner nice to see you you seems to know a lot about that region do you live around there I'm a Welshman oh yeah you are a Welshman oh you want to get a picture to you yes abely with me would be honor for us there goes all right on the world's largest cruise ship it seems the possibilities are endless I think it's been you know one of the best cruises we've had and the weather's been fantastic I think really we're offering the best vacation we have the best entertainment uh great food great Port of calls you're going to see some grandparents with the parents and the little kids you're going to see couples people from all over the world is really a really fun vacation for Captain Rick Sullivan hotel director Jan LCA cornelli and the 2200 crew members of Symphony Of The Seas hosting 6,000 guests has been a challenging around the-clock effort and worth it that's what I love to hear at the end of the cruise our guests really having a good time that's music to the yearsss of the crew of this ship on this Cruise every one of them has played their own little part after all that's what a symphony is all all [Music] about everything about this ship is bbar let's go everything a party atmosphere with a precise German timetable delay h no your delayed from highflying entertainment to daring excursions there's always something for guests to sink their teeth into at the helm of it all feel to get rid of those a captain who never forgets who really rules the waves no matter how modern the ship is how big the elements if they don't want you to be here then you won't be here AA Nova is a boatload of fun from stem to stern guests can party in 23 different bars and lounges feast in their choice of 17 restaurants swing and slide through an ocean-bound amusement park or just kick back on the wideopen top deck and at every port there's a new Island Experience just waiting to be explored the options you have as a passenger you know they're almost unlimited so the biggest challenge is actually to find out what is your favorite commanding Aida Nova is a high point in Captain Vincent safa's career they're basically two career paths nautical and Technical and I chose a nautical one the well it was Bullseye he's always happy to brag about his ship it's brand new and it's really packed with the latest technology and good morning stand by we're in the briefing it cost a billion dollars to build Aida Nova the world's fifth largest cruise ship featuring state-of-the-art facilities for up to 5,200 [Music] guests we have a lot of prototype systems in every Department technical nautical Bridge equipment uh guest service department entertainment you name it but it's what you can't see that makes Aida Nova the prototype for Cruising Into the Future this is the very first large cruise ship built with uh LNG fuel technology liquefied natural gas is the cleanest burning fossil fuel producing almost no toxic particles and 80% less nitrogen oxides than the heavy fuel oil most cruise ships run on this ship runs on clean natural gas over the next 7 Days Aida Nova will sail from Spain's Canary Islands northward to the Portuguese island of Madera then they'll return to the canaries visiting tenar and the Eastern Isles of fuera Ventura and lerate before returning to Grand Canaria we got three engines no technical limitations so far reported it's 9:50 pm in the port of Las Palmas to Grand Canaria AA Nova's Bridge team is eer to pull away from the pier I don't see them I see that one pickup yeah but but right now this ship is going nowhere where could they be some key personnel are missing God damn it welome well I don't know the Ming men are late pilot is kind of late so uh the captain can't leave without a local pilot on board and he needs the Ming crew to set the lines free so departure should be 2200 so there's no way I'm going to make this now at 9 957 there right and there he is the moing team shows up oh oh please don't hurry up not the liveliest Bunch Germans have to clocks the others have to time so this is a ship tailored for the German speaking markets and that's the issue with no time to spare the pilot finally makes an appearance welcome aboard Mr pilot you know that I have departure in 20 seconds yes so what happened anything delay or no to delay no you're delayed I was expecting you 15 minutes before departure the priority is to get Aida Nova on the move away and out to sea as soon as possible Roger off like all pulling the 337 M long ship away from the dock and moving forward is simple enough but maneuvering past the vessel ahead of them is a little tricky you can have some Gusty winds here when you go into the wind shielding of the other ship you know let's say your forward part is shielded but the half part is not and you know she could start angling up and actually you're heading towards the ship so you have to be careful to balance remaining wind Force which still attacks your Stern while you go ahead so that she's not going to turn to Port towards the other ship the bridge team threads it it way through the congested Port then turns left into Open Water all right secure the anchors for [Music] SE day two of the cruise is spent at Sea hello it's the perfect opportunity for guests to jump into all the ship has to offer in the four elements playground an active crowd tackles the water slides and tries to strike the right balance on the jungle climbing ropes I just did the Rope park it was really exciting with the hide and uh the ship is moving and it's really a good fun it was like wobbly but it was like fun and you were climbing and then you saw the whole and down there there's a more relaxed Vibe outside on the top deck we left the job and N Cru by 11 a.m. a boisterous crowd is already putting the y in the OA as you can see it's really busy please make sure that the service is organized and everybody is Happy Head of food and beverage Patrick schle and doll's team is serving up about 100 kg of chicken and 40 kilos of Bavarian white sausage the big is busy of course the service is busy and we have to manage in only a few minutes that everybody is getting the food fast the drinks fast and this is the biggest challenge for us general manager Nicola gulen is the go-to guy for passengers and crew alike never getting Glory go ahead hi morning hello this morning he's running his rounds of the ship first stop the beach club on Deck 16 this afternoon we be pretty back so we need to make sure everybody get a nice place okay sure no problem can you take care yeah yeah I can organize thank you the membrane roof protects against cool weather and wind but still allows guests to bask in the sun let's say you have bad weather or it's gray or whatever you will hear have the impression that you're on a Caribbean Beach is enjoying the Sun On Deck 18 and make sure everything is tied a few final touches in the secluded Cabanas they're going to enjoy a very exclusive time here in the Sun and following uh that everything is getting right the Beating Heart of AA Nova is the theatrum a three-story entertainment venue which sits right at the center of the ship just press the button and everything is safe and then we go up with the stage that's where Gabrielle link aa's manager of Premier Productions is pulling together a brand new Extravaganza steam circus is invented for our passengers as the big Family Show of NOA the show will Premiere later in the [Music] voyage how do you feel almost ready almost ready almost ready yeah right now Gabrielle is focusing on a strenuous routine performed by acrobats Anton Cera and Siri clco make it more spectacular It's Tricky especially with those two guys hanging up in the thank you we have a ship's movement oh you also have to check that the technician up there and the two artists are interacting in a perfect way together that's basically what makes it the difficult you not allowed to have mistakes in there it's like one mistake is usually enough if the waves cause the ship to roll the smallest mistake could prove costly for this Balancing Act so is that the pilot um yeah passing the brake water now very good it's 5:00 a.m. on day three of the cruise Captain Vincent safala is guiding Aida Nova into the harbor of funchal on the Portuguese island of Madera approaching 10 the captain has three of the ship's four engines running for the entry but all of a sudden Yeah question particular reason why we are on MGO is one engine he spots an issue with one of them and calls down to engine control you know we got now three engines running for the maneuver and uh I saw there was one engine um on the running on diesel instead of LG aaya Nova is a Pioneer the first cruise shift to sail using cleaner burning liquefied natural gas with diesel as a backup if something happens it's not going to it's not going to affect our maneuver right the engine automatically switches from LNG to diesel fuel in less than a second don't Sail Without backups but the goal for every cruise is to sail start to finish on L alone okay thank you okay we're back to full LNG mode well they had this little hi cup for safety reasons you know they they switched to diesel to have a steady power supply but now it's switched back already so we have them all on running on l G morning Mr pilot morning H Captain nice to see you again the captain lays out his plans for arrival at funchal with pilot Jose Silva AA Nova will approach the harbor and swing the stern 90° in the Turning Basin then they'll back up to come alongside the dock this is this is our intended maneuver you know I pinned the bow there any particular questions from your side Captain safala is mentoring the junior members of his team I do like running a team I do like building a culture so he gives first officer Yan Hilbert the responsibility to Pivot the ship they take her to 355 356 don't be shy with that speed pattern is no problem you know she's doing exactly what we want her to do you know we're losing the speed she starts turning my Pivot Point is all the way to the forward just beautiful so basically right now it's hands in the pocket and just see what she does with the turn almost complete taking control turn the captain will steer Aida Nova back into its birth so we should see now the break water any second yeah there it is out on the break water there's a welcoming committee of one anytime when rain snow what whatever condition you got this uh this guy welcoming us into Port famous guy by 7 a.m. slide step on The Brak should do the trick Aida Nova is tied up at the birth the swing was almost perfect and also good cooperation with the pilots as usual in FAL you know today I'm quite happy passengers are quick to head out and explore this popular cruise ship stop is a 600-year-old settlement known for its harbor Botanical Gardens and Madera wine you control your descent R and here and the other hand below the Carabiner JP bagach is the ship's activities manager today he's taking his guests 1500 m above sea level for a thrilling adventure going to sit down here okay walk this but SC but it's very they're repelling down the sides of watery Gorges at FAL ecological Park very good excellent this is one of the great European hotpots for canyoning don't try to shoot your way we're going to be more sleepy I've never done anything like this before I'm feeling good a little bit nervous excit this is definitely um lifetime experience for our guests it's a great adventure the guests enjoy it because they don't have that in Germany [Applause] guys see what we find in downtown funchal at the food market Chef France schne and Sue Chef Denise Weller are on the hunt for Creative culinary ideas is the most better banana we have in the island because the more sweet one this is why we are coming on the market also that to try what we get and then sometimes this is when I go back to the to the ship I go in my kitchen in my galley and then uh I create some new dishes and for the main course something to really bite down on wow okay this is asara is 1,200 M under the water as on the sea you have to angle it in the night times when it's coming up this fish is especially here for Madera I know the guests ask me always ah I saw the fish the ugly fish on the market how is it taste very nice as the day winds down high up in the hills of funa general manager Nicola gulan and security officer Robert Bartel have come asore to stretch their sea yeah you know for a c PO is where you drop the anchor it's very important that you have some some distance on the ship you're living on the ship you're you're working on the ship you you're doing always the same stuff and so so it's it's very important that you that you get out sometime and just find some inner peace so now we're hungry huh yeah now let's go eat I didn't that lunch so now it's time to go for back on the ship in the Rini restaurant kitchen Chef bronze is about to work some culinary Magic on that ugly fish the maras please I have a new idea we put it directly in the pan Mara so it dis sa a little bit warm he stirs some local passion fruit right into the pan while Sue Chef Denise caramelizes those fresh local bananas Madera is the island of flowers so we give also some flowers on top voila and that's for us Madera on the plate in the Rosine a little bit taste from the island on the cruise ship okay I will tell you when we are through and then you can go on it's been a really full day in funchal but there's one more treat for the guests so we expect tonight um about 1,000 people head of entertainment Eva Pororo and her team are transforming the beach club into a nightclub there's a Twist to this Gathering we not allowed to have uh real loud music and special PS that's why the guests will hear these music over special headphones these colorcoded headphones allow party goers to choose music from one of three different DJs so everyone dances to their own beat every guest is who has these headphones is like and you like oh my God what's going on here it's the quietest dance party you'll ever see so this is really [Applause] [Applause] funny when midnight rolls around Captain safala casts off at the next Port she's really she's really shaky the bridge team will have to perform some tricky moves of its own Raj that morning Romy it's go to godamn early it's 4:00 a.m. on day five of the cruise AA Nova is entering the port of Santa Cruz DET tener and coming alongside on this approach staff Captain Michael Schmidt will back the ship up to the dog it should be a breeze we start now closing in uh with the stern towards the Bison at the same time we start getting the ship um slowly parallel all right actually 3 m 3 m to go three to go and then 3 me to go why the hell is she still creeping a certain she the wind maybe I guess a little that ship is always a tight fit but now uh you know we we just experiencing some headwinds there's a strong wind funneling down the mountains onto the ship's bow pushing it past the bird so we have to go a couple of meters ahead again three to go for half station Spring Light startles one me to go one to go for you know this is our tolerance 40 cm on the 337 M ship finally after duking it out with the headwinds okay she's creeping nicely oh for station uh keep TI Lions vessel is alongside in position finding a position with that uh huge lady can be can be challenging so uh welcome to tene tener is the largest of the Canary Islands it's a favorite holiday spot for Europeans with its temperate climate and golden sand beaches activities manager JP bukachi and his girlfriend Ken Hartman may just have the sweetest jobs on the cruise today we want to try out stand up pedling at the new beach for our guests I think that's quite a quality time working on this ship because of we can go outside we can explore all the destinations but at the same time I can explore all that with my boyfriend together done that makes it really really special for me this is a busy day for the rest of the crew 2,000 guests are disembarking and 2200 new guests will be coming on board that's approximately 1,100 cabins to prepare making sure that the sheets are clean it's a cardio challenge for executive housekeeper janal Cavit and and her team because of the massive size of this ship is walking every embarcation day I normally walk around 30,000 steps okay guys how are we here okay here she comes the most important job today is to fuel up or bunker with liquefied natural gas it's a lot more complicated than just sticking a hose in your car we have several stages for the bunkering so uh right now we're on stage one Waring off the [Music] barge 24 hours ago the engineers began preparing the system drastically cooling down all the pipes and tanks that will carry or store the LNG I will go on okay communication over yep sh to remain a liquid LNG has to be kept really cold at- 162° cius in a liquified state it is absolutely impossible to have an uh let's say to explode or to ignite the gas risk with LG operation is since it is so extremely cold that uh you know if you don't uh treat your system properly you can have cold shocks a cold shock is when super cooled LNG from the bunker barge contacts a warm pipe on the ship causing the fuel to vaporize and expand so rapidly it could even rupture the pipe this can put a lot of stress on the system on the pipings a rupture would expose the natural gas to open air where the slightest spark could start a fire then you have gas inside the room and this is a a s h control is s NOA we are ready to take over the liquefied natural gas our lines are cooled down we are ready to start with the bunkering process with the bunker barge alongside Second Officer Eustace eart issues a warning to everyone on board dear guests this your officer of the watch speaking we will soon start bunkering of liquefied natural gas so basically the entire Seaside is now a restricted smoking area so uh you're not allowed to smoke on the balconies you're not allowed to smoke side on this side we have security guards in place we will start with tank number one the bunkering operation is underway on the pier side of the ship provision Master Michael vvo is loading Aida Nova with another kind of fuel can you put it on side please 120 tons of comfort food brought in from hambur Germany also meat is inside special German sausages this a typical German product R and Germans like it really we use it nearly every day German food is important and then there's the wine now we are in our wine tank store we can put 3,000 L of white wine or red wine inside that's 45,000 L but as everyone knows Germans really like their beer well having a brewery on board of a ship that's a very special thing in the Brew House On Deck 8 Stefan Danner is making a fresh batch of Suds 800 L worth it begins with seawater sea water is being disorted in a reverse osmosis um machine which essentially removes all of the irons all of the minerals all of the salt and um leaves us with almost distilled water and then we have excellent Brewing Quality Water Stefan's Brew gets two Steins up from the guests [Music] perfect control over we are finished with our bunkering operation we are now disconnecting the horses after 5 hours they've taken on 850 tons of liquefied natural gas enough to power the ship for the next 2 weeks it's been a long day for Aida noa's crew and once the ship is safely out to sea again it's time for a bit of well- earned relaxation in the crew only bar a Cru is much more than just a workplace you know you live there for several months sky going alarm here as you can imagine you know uh you need a kind of a sanctuary you know the crew can be amongst themselves you know so it is extremely important okay guys as you know this is one of the drawbacks I'm buying the drinks but I'm not drinking cuz I'm driving so I I leave you to the fun stuff 8 hours later the captain is about to put those driving skills to the test going into a shallow area at low tide and it's quite windy on this next entry the bridge team faces a triple threat V current 11.7 knots it's 7:00 a.m. on day 6 a vaida Nova's cruise around the Canary Island we have some current very well pushing current they've sailed overnight from tenar to Porto Del Rosario on the island of Fort Ventura they got a tanker at this peer getting to the dock is the easy part tying up is another matter at most ports the crew would use an equal number of moing lines at the back bow and Stern with the bow lines keeping the ship from moving backward and the stern lines keeping it from moving forward but here there's nowhere to secure the last two Stern lines and if the wind blows too hard the massive ship could run a ground in the shallow water off the bow we will have available only two bower for the St line the bridge team will have to work closely with the more crew to lay out the ropes actually today will be a little bit tricky because we still don't know our position so we don't know where we will ends up anyway so it's a plan but have to be discussed during the operation from the bridge they use the ship's bow thrusters and rear propellers to wiggle Aida Nova into position so uh both soon question the side case clear give me the okay off station question 2 m ahead is that still okay it seems to take forever wind up to 24 [Music] kns it takes another 15 long minutes to maneuver the ship so the lines they can use can be L secured Roger Noah so vessel in position he keep tied both Springs yes forward station also keep tied to our alliance vessel is alongside after a lot of fussing AA Nova is docked was a bit of a you know um played by years so to speak but um it worked out so this is all about you know make it easier in the future now that you did it for the first time the island of Fort a Ventura is all about spectacular scenery and lots and lots of sand my task for today is to check out the vehicles and the agency the whole the whole Excursion for the guests and let's check this out JB Bachi has joined some guests on a 4x4 Adventure first stop a wideopen nature reserve that covers 27 Square km thanks to the trade winds the dunes constantly change shape hello prki today will be the premier performance of the steampunk Circus the ship is moving a little bit today so we will do it full out but you have to take care that it's really Gabrielle link has called for a last minute rehearsal with acrobats Anton and Seri okay and now Ben she wants some safety adjustments in case the ship rolls a bit during the show I like that it's final run of course we nervous anything else no okay then uh can you up on the bridge it's Second Officer Eustace eer in the spotlight so how are you doing today pretty fine thank you you sure about that yes he's getting a promotion Mr eart formerly known as Second Officer yeah it is uh Now official that uh you received your promotion to First officer mhm yeah feel free to get rid of those yeah and um here we go now that already looks much better you've just been promoted thank you very much take care well that's a big deal oh yeah it is don't forget to sanitize afterwards congratulations all the best as the day winds down the final stop on the 4x4 tour is a coastal lava formation where guests watch the sun set across the Atlantic I think this is the view why I'm doing my job actually so this is um one of the moments I realized that I'm doing all right that's amazing [Music] Now by 900 p.m. it's time for the first officer to show off his new Stripes he's taking the ship out to sea under Captain safa's supervision so he's actually driving you know hands on the sticks so now we start ramping up the let's say a bit the difficulties of the Maneuvers today we have a bit stronger wind conditions of 25 with winds gusting up to 30 knots or 55 kmph now the wind is gusting up a bit more um yeah and first time reversing it basically out of this port Eustace is in for one big test a NOA forward off station let's go everything Captain safala is watching over the newly promoted first officer UST eart as he eases a NOA away from the do wind is not not constant you just have to pay attention to the B will have to move the bow to starboard 90° to point the ship out to open water stop the stop the B Thruster the B Thruster because like I don't want it to move too F down actually I'm not happy with the movement yeah we just increase on the ball again because you know the thing is the V raser has even more momentum With the Wind so if you stop it too early yeah you're you will you will move the entire ship that way ship if if you would let her run for three 3 minutes four minutes that way so not problem that's not an issue Eustace battles the wind for the first half of the turn rate of turn the wind already crossed your bow your bow does not have a problem with the wind if you're checking the speed you're helping with the stern and uh you know about 10° more and uh the wind will push on theall the wind will be your ally actually yeah she starts turning the first officer has successfully maneuvered the big ship out of port actually we are clear so we can both both okay so both pots are running ahead Pitch Four both thrusts are stopped proceeding to the center he then takes control at the center console okay and I take hustace practiced this departure before in a marine simulator but pulling it off for real is a whole new Triumph fail the simulator well it's just you know insert coin push one player but here if something goes wrong um bad idea working with the wind uh was more challenging than expected um yeah but felt happy and thank you for the opportunity okay so ready to take the charge I'm ready to take the charge later that evening with the ship out to sea another skill set is about to be put to the test what we finally can present it to the audience a bit a bit shaky excited a lot excited after 2 years in development and 6 weeks of rehearsal the curtain is going up on the premiere of the steampunk circus have a good show finally after weeks of work for you we are there guys listen up everybody guys oh so since it's a premere break a leg have fun [Music] [Applause] ladies and gentlemen boys and girls children of all ages we bring you the cice it doesn't take long for the guests to be caught up in the show [Music] for the climax Anton and Siri take to the heights [Music] during the performance the ship rocks a little but the acrobats just roll with it [Music] [Applause] now we're so happy now release every motion stay calm now and just keep on do it keep on do it do it do it the artist did a great job even though ship a little shaky I'm completely freaking out [Music] now proceed yeah it's only a 4-Hour Journey overnight to era on the island of lanzer the final Port they'll visit on this Cruise heading set course um gentlemen usual maneuver so we do the approach we make a 180 turn and uh and we go in backwards three at first the arrival planning goes as expected we approach to our birthing position and then uh we find our position now the challenges um just stand by we just are on one engine now say what we on one engine for whatever reason this is not good news without warning the ship has gone from running on two engines to only one was the engine already in yellow or red many uh not yet yeah hello so um what happened just outside the harbor of Arif aaya Nova is unexpectedly running on only one engine so shall I keep her on uh the minimum RPM set for the moment after using two engines to sail here overnight one engine has suddenly shut down we have an issue we are just rning on DG number three down in engine control they trouble shooting uh we let to know when we are ready uh we don't know yet we don't know exactly what happened it's just that you know uh we lost one engine it just disconnected and um started shutting down Captain safala wants three of Aida Nova's four engines operating to maneuver the ship to the dock okay so they're getting the engines back online one by one for the moment we keeping on minimum RPM yeah we keep it on minimum until further notice I could even do it with two engines if necess NE but that kind of limits your power reserves so speed wise we're still coming down 10 minutes later from all the generators are back in service man with and it turns out a minor sensor failure caused the momentary engine loss with three engines up and running Captain safala lays out his backup plan and another uh let's say goes wrong uh let's say I I lose my B thrusters we will go straight uh right out of again if I lose my propulsion then uh we stop the ship either with the anchors or by the wind once in the harbor the captain turns the ship around I'm taking the wind pretty much at a Stern uh which is going to make it easier to get the ship into the port then he backs toward the dog forward off 202 position with his teams on the bridge and in engine control monitoring the engines the entire time the wind is pushing us back I just give her a NCH with the engines just give a kick with the engines and here she comes she is now she's moving no matter how modern the ship is how big how powerful the elements if they don't want you to be here then you won't be here and you have to respect that on day seven of aaya Nova's Cruise many of the passengers are up early eag here to head out on tour the Canary Island of lanzer emerged from the sea following volcanic eruptions that started 15 million years ago the result is a paradise of tiny Coes and beaches that stretch around the shoreline but these guests won't be spending much time on land they're heading out for a very different kind of cruise this submarine was designed specifically for tourism at a cost of more than $4 million it has room for 48 passengers and [Music] crew and can dive to a depth of 60 [Music] M there are 700 different marine species in the waters around the Canary Islands [Music] it was a great idea to drive with a submarine it's wonderful fantastic [Music] by 700 p.m. everyone is back above the waterline and aboard the ship St ready ready okay well shall we station as Captain safala set sail for the return to Grand Canaria can you uh just advise the stations we are pushing actively alongside so because of the wash and with the lines that they careful he takes a moment to reflect so you got a beautiful sunset you're just sailing towards the Open Sea after a pretty successful week actually these are the moments which also let's say fuel your motivation to you know start over again for a new cruise this has been a cruise p packed with [Applause] memories but this captain and his ship aren't looking back we try to keep our working environment clean I'm not talking about the ship I'm talking about you know the oceans out because otherwise there is nothing to to show to our customers with its cuttingedge use of LG technology AA Nova has its sight set on New Horizons and a cleaner way of fueling all cruise ships in the years to come on a ship who's very name means Wonder wonderful amazing the crew of MSC mavilia goes above and beyond it's like a a machine that is at his maximum speed cruising through tight navigation here have to think that it's not a car we cannot stop like that to keep this brand new ship running because has more damage can give a Bigg D and leave its passengers immersed the time of the laugh relax and have fun in Wonder they're expecting the best of the best MSE marilia is the biggest ship ever launched by a european-based cruise line 316 M long 43 M wide with a towering 19 deck there's a water park at the stern of the ship and MC's first ever ropes course the ceiling of the two deck prominade features animations played on an 80 M long LED screen the longest of any at se and there's a $23 million theater Lounge sit back and enjoy sonar custom built for a first ever series of C toay shows at [Applause] Sea it's amaz ship it's uh something [Music] unbelievable Captain Rafael Pon corvo started with Mediterranean Shipping Company when the company only operated container ships and was on MC's first ever passenger ship in 199 90 it's already pass one century but now mea vilia is his life guiding this new ship and leading its crew of 1500 through their first few cruises it's a giant but you can move like a speedy boat on this five night cruise MSC mavilia will sail from Genoa to the the neighboring Italian ports of Naples and mesina from there it's a visit to the island of Malta and a day at Sea before finishing up in [Music] Barcelona it all begins with a challenging early morning entry into Port speed 6 notes 6 notes okay well powerful for the start of Maria's second Cruise ever with a local Harbor pilot aboard to assist captain ponticorvo now as usual we keep some water starbor then we return to B they plan to rotate the ship 150° with only 30 m clearance on either end then drive mavilia backwards for more than a kilometer passing within 50 m of land on either side before coming alongside the dock but the captain can't pull off a maneuver like this without a reliable team of officers alongside him 3.5 3.5 we're on point led by staff Captain mikelo good person must every time he show me something that they didn't know and they I think this the right way to be must position it's quite perfect with the ship lined up for the turn perfect in the middle my compliments get the captain transfers controls from the center console to the Portside Bridge wi 15 M away from there he calls mavilia sophisticated steering tools into ction okay forward's being clear below the water line two powerful propeller pods turned to different angles working in tandem to swing the stern of the ship using the bow as a pivot point we done using only the pods without using the Tres so she has a quite strong power on a with the turn complete the captain remains on the port wi giving him a clear view down the side of the ship to drive backwards through the narrow channel the bridge team watches for signs that the wind might be picking up threatening to push the ship off course wind is uh the enemy everywhere sometime can happen that we are expecting 20 25 notes and will come at 30 35 40 minutes after entering the harbor 702 70 M to Captain ponticorvo slides his mega ship alongside the pier like he was parking a minivan at the mall sometime uh for me it's uh more easy to park the ship that's my [Music] car with the ship tied up alongside the rush is on to provision mavilia for the next week we start 7:30 and we finish around 4:30 in the afternoon without stop food and beverage manager masim Mo lazar's team is Relentless today is our main Port is our Port of loading 32 pallets from each truck must be transferred onto the ship by forklift then race to a variety of storage areas on marilia Lower decks we usually we have uh 60 7 track only fruit and vegetable is 45,000 Kil this is our biggest and busiest day while food and other Provisions blow onto marilia there's a steady stream of more than 4,000 passengers moving off the ship some departing after a week's cruise but many leaving only for the day on most cruises all guests start and end their vacation in the same port but on this Cruise passengers can check in or out at any [Music] port oh my gosh I'm super excited wonderful amazing I love it look at the ceiling most guests opt for one of more than 1200 balcony cabins at a price of $1,350 for the cruise those looking for a little more space upgrade to one of eight duplex suites with a master bedroom upstairs and a living room downstairs there are even two Wellness Suites complete with an exercise machine right in the room by 10 :0 a.m. most of the 16 provisioning trucks have arrived but with lunchtime approaching Nimo is growing concerned one truck hasn't shown up and its goods will be needed in the next hour okay but did we receive already the TRU it's done some of the items are important ingredients for the lunchtime so there are some category of food that absolutely must come when the ship arrive if mimo can't locate the missing truck in a hurry the first meal of this Cruise might be a bust at the Port of Genoa food and beverage manager masimo lazari is on the hunt for a missing truck I'm looking for uh actual fruit vegetables because today the truck arrived too late I mean we got just one it's 10:30 a.m. and the produce in the missing truck is crucial for today's fresh lunch [Music] buffet saying that he came with two trucks okay one it was for us another one it's for another ship that is coming tomorrow so I believe that there is a a mistake even if the truck is found right away the galley will have barely enough time to wash cut and serve the missing fruits and vegetables maybe there are a lot of traffic uh too many trucks and so they decide to send him here for mimo finally finds the truck now we need to find the driver say it's like a treasure jackpot perfect I find it what I'm looking for which is all my fruit and vegetables that I need as soon as possible to get in over the next 6 hours the guests fuel up and the ship fills [Music] up by 5:00 p.m. okay let go forward up let's go everything [Music] mavilia slides away from the pier and heads out of port right on time it's a good start it's very good start the cruise has begun with plenty to enjoy through the night and into the next morning just before 10:00 a.m. on day two MSE mavilia approaches the port of Naples Italy Captain pontac corvo knows this Harbor well his home in sarento is just a 90-minute drive down the coast from Naples we can you can go to pompe to see all Roman Empire to Capri and Naples Naples is a really nice city Down On Deck four at the bow a boat delivers the local Harbor pilot to the ship the pilot knows every detail every little challenge this port can present and when he arrives on the bridge he's given a warm welcome everything okay everything okay are you happy yes there very very one espresso no then the pilot and the captain get down to business wind at moment it's about 16 knots on saor be length over the pi 390 M maximum draft 10.5 so you like to swing about P about Port they bring marilia into the harbor just like yesterday Captain ponticorvo engages the propeller pods to drive the stern to starboard this time though he also calls on two bow thrusters to push the front of the ship to port rotating mirabilia how many me 25 modess and sidling up to the pier okay start S the spring line we are clear so the people they can start to go out to enjoy Naples okay can you give me an update in two minutes down on the pier excursions manager Paulo Cena has his handsful we have the groups from the Y Club ready you cannot let them go like this okay so please start calling the cabin Paulo has 12 guests heading out on guided tours today we have the vus coming down now exion to vus and Capri is leaving and we're getting ready for Pompei where we have uh around 500 people 25 buses four private tours for a few of the ship's VIPs and 300 guests stepping off the big cruise for a much shorter one to the island of Capri these are our biggest day it's crazy with the traffic in Naples known to be notoriously bad sending all these folks out on tour is only half the battle my biggest war is just having the guest coming back to the ship on time by 6:30 p.m. most of the buses from Paulo's excursions at least those from the tours around Naples have made their way back to the ship those who' ventured further away are a bit more of a worry biggest concern is when we have exion going to sento those places where there's just one road one accident could really shut the whole Road and then we week even the clock rolls past 700 p.m. maravil is official All Aboard time the Excursion buses even those from sarento are all back okay now with only 10 minutes until the ship is due to sail the bridge looks to the ship's immigration officer John Luca Evangelista 7:30 is our cellway so the bridge is waiting for my ort but by John Luca's count seven guests are still missing that means the captain May soon be forced to make a costly Choice delay departure or leave the missing guests behind it's 7:20 in the port of Naples MSC mavilia is due to leave port in just 10 minutes now is almost 720 so we 20 minutes late more than 4,000 passengers are aboard but seven are still missing all the excursions organized by the ship have returned so there's no obligation to wait usually it's all about uh traffic Captain Rafa P corvo isn't eager to leave anyone behind but delaying departure means High fuel costs racing to the next Port if we lose time we have to speed up all the time that we lose we have two game after a few tense minutes at the gang way the missing group finally returns just in time there 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 on Captain Pond corvo doesn't waste a second he makes a beline for Open Sea sailing through the night toward the port of mesina on the island of Sicily for the third morning of the cruise the bridge team is on high alert with the staff Captain watching out for anything in the ship's path you have to think that it's not a c we cannot stop like that so no with that speed we need about uh 1 [Music] mile but today the straight is unusually clear with the local Harbor pilots on board the captain steers marilia into MSA Harbor and toward the pier with ease 100 me 1 0 0 okay but as the captain rotates the ship to come alongside the dock 45 M okay after thr Bridge checking swing on port side from forward the clearance on the swing will be around 35 40 m one of the pilots grows concerned he's convinced the captain hasn't left enough room off the bow to get past a warship parked alongside the pier come [Music] from the Pilot's perspective it looks as if the boughs of the two ships are moments away from colliding but the captain knows his ship better the same view grants him confidence that there's actually plenty of room bridge I confirm the swing is clear on starbur side for it's clear from the warship they don't understand the uh that the point of view from the bridge it's different of the reality only 15 minutes after he started the turn all clear all clear Captain panoro cozies the ship up to to the pier just as he planned very while the guests head off to enjoy the sights morning how about you staff Captain Mikel Moro has plenty to see himself need to replace need to replace yeah and we cannot close totally call the hotel engineer mik's sharp eye doesn't miss a thing a little bit thinner to remove because still Scotch tape from the art from bits of tape or drops of paint left over from the ship's construction everything is clean but the the still deep the small drops that don't give the right impression to installing some padding in the aqua Park some protection like this sponge protection it's a an area always is uh it's full of children kids they are running everywhere can be slippery and then can be an injury for them to the brand new ship's NeverEnding battle against rust if we don't do the properly maintenance in the morning uh we will have the rust it's all about the details I want to catch a little thing before that becoming a big thing for the engineers this day in for gives them the opportunity to fine-tune the power plant these new type over the engine marilia has two 16 cylinder engines and two with 12 cylinders they're diesel electric generators capable of producing more than 67,000 KW of power that's enough to power a large town when you factor in all the gleys restaurants pools and common areas on the ship that's exactly what marilia is we see if the roller are in good condition roller for push it's chief engineer Antonio yakin's job to keep the generators running like new because a small damage can give a big damage but today a problem you a small scratch on a roller that helps open and close one of the valves we can damage the roller and the valve not open anymore in good condition and we can have a big damage on the cyinder it's an important catch one that should be solved by a little sanding if the next inspection we detect the a deep scetch will be necessary to replace all these inspections touchups and fixes by marav vila's 1500 crew members are crucial to the ship's operation even if the guests have no idea they are taking place kind of like the work that goes on in rehearsal to produce a successful theatrical show good that was beautiful but tomorrow night when when an actual show takes the stage there can be no last minute fixes sir to at se is about to [Music] debut it's just before 700 a.m. on day four of MSE marilia Mediterranean Cruise the ship has sailed overnight from the Italian island of Sicily and is approaching the capital of the island nation of Malta valeta it's one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean a trio of tight turns at the entrance to the port makes for the most difficult part of this morning's navigation you have to come and then turn to subo then very quick turn on Port going inside and turn fast to sub so it's like a snake it's only the second time the ship has ever entered Veta the biggest hazards are underwater marilia Hull sits 8.5 M below the water line steer outside of the channel markers and the ship could run a ground in waters less than 8 m deep report to the bridge when the C will be a beam of a green light but entering theeta is about far more than the Maneuvers it's a very nice place it's historical City and uh it's you can feel history there the fortifications here are up to 3500 years old over the last 7 years they've been the focus of a massive red restoration effort to remove old plant growth and pollution stains and clean and repair the Limestone and that makes for the most stunning Port Entry in the Mediterranean can start turning now of you okay you see Captain now you are yeah all clear [Music] very very good job thank you while the guests head out to enjoy the sights Down On Deck seven at the stern of the ship a group of dancers and acrobats is preparing a brand new production by the world-renowned cir tole let's go through these sixes with counts especially created for MSC marilia 5 the Carousel Lounge is nothing like the soaring circus tents and big Vegas theaters where the troop made its name that is a huge Plus for us I find it fascinating when I watch artists and they're so close I can see the sweat beat out of them but that also forc stage director Susan goodro to think differently we're going to do one spin right do we have enough time to go spin stop and look we have other stunts we could do instead of that okay I got more creative as a director because all a sudden I didn't have this height for instance silks they're usually on one point they go up they go down they stretch them and they fly but I'm using them in a rotation it's a different approach to how you see aiel staging the show on a ship also called for a different type of performer in terms of Designing the show like the story line of the show in the acrobatics I made sure that I had acts that I felt could do well on a nonflat Surface a constantly moving surface it's kind of a big head trip on how you can find different ways to do it great [Music] guys in the galley executive Sue Chef pasquali P and his team when you do this press top okay are preparing a three course meal that will be served to those attending the Show excellent on the menu a green apple and lobster salad garnished with basil we fried basil in oil is a crisy is a is a ni [Music] testing for the main course seared salmon with barley and mango chanelli we have a sweet salting spicy they going to be amazing or slow roasted ve Shank great job guys just you the Sal we have to fix just Sal both the dinner and the show will debut tonight is a more than dinner is a all of experience and both are looking for ra reviews it's the brand you know C they're expecting the best of the best right now though marilia guests are more interested in encountering history than making it strolling through the ancient walled city of Medina visiting the Gilded Baroque arches of St John's Co Cathedral and generally soaking in the courtyards laneways and cobbles of Veta by 5:30 p.m. the passengers are all aboard the moing team is preparing to reel in the [Music] lines and Chef Pali is checking in at each of the five specialty restaurants around the prominade on decks six and seven yeah good see bigger medium and smaller see they look [Music] different wow very good Chef a sexy your this is the right one sexy sexy yeah the must to be sexy must be sexy guys then pasquali joins the service for the pre-show dinner you see everyone is here bu bu bu bu buim yeah let's go guys how many you need With A Little Night Music the servers circulate through the lounge and upstairs the cast prepares for its first ever performance of a brand new show called sonar after almost an hour squali and his team have just one course left to serve they're going to put the caramel on top on this one they going to e is wow how many how many how many how many six can I have a six the first dinner service for the new show has gone exactly as planned if we starting well we have to finish well but even p admits that his team's work is just an appetizer thank you for the guest this is just a beginning of the experience the real main course is about to be served sit back and enjoy [Music] sonar it's night four of MSE mavilia Mediterranean cruise but it's opening night for sir dle at se and the brand new show sonar the sound system was so incredible so I could really play with with how people experience sound but the sound is just the start we have a lot of toys here we have uh the big stairs that opened and the weight of the stairs themselves it was a big challenge for the engineers to be able to tie this to the ship structure I have this rotating Carousel so I can fly this point and it's in constant motion we needed to get the movement horizontally since we didn't have the hide that's why we went with the turntable which gives us the movement on stage I've got the performance tracks of the audience as they travel so they're looking at the stage and all a sudden comes in from [Music] behind it's a huge L screen because of the length and the ship that flexes they had to design the support with rubber mounts so it it's not flexing cracking so these elements that are big and heavy they need to sustain the storm conditions of the [Music] ship tonight though it's safe to say no one is wondering how all this is done on a [Applause] ship most are just suspended in wonder [Music] [Applause] itself day five Dawns with MSC marilia spending a full day at sea sailing from Malta to Barcelona for hotel director jepe Pan and the crew staff today is all about entertaining the 4,000 guests on board it's the most challenging day of the cruise because we have everybody on board you know all activity are here on board nothing else than the ship the Sea and the passengers it's like a a machine that is at his maximum speed now at the stern of the ship on the top deck Bon Williams is rigging guests for a trek through the brand new Himalayan Bridge ropes course we'll involve well over 100 people generally just in the Himalayan Bridge some people get afraid some people love it they go three or four times if you have a fear of Hearts that's the only thing that will stop you really and for those looking to cool off a drink from the [Music] bar a cup of gelato in the prominade well gazing up at the Led [Music] Dome or a rump through the water park over here we have our biggest kids pool this is where the kids come Splash around with their parents it's really fun they come turn just to relax up top here we are have three slides these two are our biggest over here we have a Champagne Ball you shoot from the top you spin around twice or three times depending how fast you go and behind us we have uh the mini slide where the young children between one and four will come play around everyone loves this part have 500 people coming through the gates at one time it's a lot of work for us but for the guests this time of their life to relax and [Music] f after a full day and night at sea captain Pon Coro and his team are up early the next morning for the last Port Entry of the cruise [Music] Barcelona sa 20 sa 20 I have the entry into the harbor is silky smooth and the mood on the bridge is [Music] light all that's left now is to set the propeller units to rotate the ship then drive mavil backwards to the Pier from the port side bowing but there's a problem the controls on the port wi aren't working back at the center console with the ship in mid rotation the captain again tries to send control to the port [Music] wi no no no suddenly what looked to be a simple doing has become a lot more complex msse marilia is completing a rotation in Barcelona Harbor and the controls the captain needs to drive and dock the ship have failed there are three sets of controls on the bridge one in the center one on the port wi and another on the starboard Wing no no no Captain pontac corvo had planned to drive the ship backwards from the port wi looking down that side of the ship with a clear line of sight to the dock now the only controls that work are in the center and on the starboard Wing but neither position allows him to clearly see where he wants to go there's no time to panic together the captain and harbor pilot guo Diaz form a plan the captain will steer the ship backwards while the others is on the bridge direct him when is a normal situation you are on side you can see everything in one side and you duck without any problem the middle of the channel is clear for now but there are cruise ships docked on one side of mavilia and cargo cranes on the other while Captain ponticorvo navigates Chief electrician Angelo gulo looks to repair the port wi controls but there's no quick fix we can't stop the engine and uh everything Take 5 minutes to reset the best option now complete the docking on the port side using the controls on the opposite side of the ship we'll try to pass in 50 m to the passengers steering clear of the docked cruise ships on the port side on side and there was like a his size on the on for side the bridge is all business this moment you can show to everybody which experience as a master that's very important for us almost an hour after the controls on the port Wing failed [Music] Foria is doed was the first time that I saw something like that he knows very well how to drive the ship and not the car congratulations to the captain it's amazing man very good everybody knew what they had to do if there is a panic we have to change kind of w not not s on ships with the ship alongside the engineers quickly diagnose the problem now lose the the signal because uh lost the power on this panel now we reboot the system and then we adjusting the power supply to increase just a little more power to the port bwing is restored in less than 20 minutes now we fix the problem it's okay the guests head into Barcelona to enjoy the sights [Music] without a clue as to the work it took to get them there safely but the same can be said of every task the crew of MSC marilia has performed on this Cruise everything that we offer I think it is not enough because never will be enough but uh we are in the right way to give everything to our guest for this bread brand new ship whose name actually means wonder the future is bright with the ship like Mia and the way the weather that we found this trip they must be always happy I cannot imagine a job better than this because it allows us to travel around the world we are dealing with people that are on holiday people that work all a year to spend one week on a ship where we spend our life so for us it's I think really a dream job after just two weeks at Sea the crew of MSE mavilia has already taken that dream job to Heart doing whatever it takes to deliver a dream vacation no [Music] wonder on its first ever season in Alaska oh it's just breathtaking it's absolutely beautiful Norwegian Joy by aims to Thrill yeah go on and off the ship oh my God that is amazing kind of mind blown sailing through daunting Waters we cannot risk anything we are on our own up here for a cruise you'll never forget this is what we came for it's a Ry good time this ship has everything that we could dream of if you're looking for an adventurous cruise through everything Alaska has to offer there's a lot more to explore here it's glorious this is unreal it's hard to find a better ship than Norwegian Joy built at a cost of $1 billion with another 50 million in customized features this ship is tailor made to face the challenges of navigating the Inside passage and to show off the spectacular scenery to its 3800 guests if you like uh nature you are in the right place Captain Carl gunar hammerin is starting his 11th season in Alaska sailing in itinerary that never fails to Delight this just for scenery and also see the wildli you will see by yourself a lot of whales coming up from the water you have to keep your eyes open then we can have bears walking on the beach Moses and everything like that this ship has a buttload of toys on board hi Martin speaking but general manager Martin ianov knows it will take more than that for Norwegian Joy debut season in Alaska to be a success okay so are we ready here the first impression is very important we are welcoming all our guests with a smile with the exceptional service we want them to remember us we want them to be back with us it all starts in Seattle Washington from here Norwegian Joy will sail up the coast of Canada entering Alaskan Waters to visit katakan Alaska's capital city Juno and icy straight Point turning South they'll make a stop in Victoria British Columbia before returning home to Seattle it's a half hour before departure going to check the weather on the way up Captain Hammer's team has gathered on the bridge you take the left seat the left seat we'll go to number one I we take the right ship when I come back yes anything they're running through last minute details and the plan is thatas LIF her out to give it over to the con to the pilot sounds good with Puget Sound pilot Michael Anthony tugs no B thrusters is 100% absolutely by 400 p.m. right on time station one and station two let go all lines let go all lines Norwegian Joy pulls away from the pier for clear clear and sets out from Seattle four ahead go Center Line Captain yeah cockpit stand by take the controls in the middle underway at this time eventually building up to about 177 and 1 half through the water top and day Swedish weather up on the top deck ladies and gentlemen welcome to the C celebration it is a joyful day my name is David I'm your cruise [Music] director the excitement is building for the voyage ahead 1 2 3 everybody jum it is our first time uh going to Alaska we've been looking forward to this for the past 15 years I'm telling you we've been talking about it this ship has everything everything that we could dream of and [Music] more by 7:45 in the evening Norwegian Joy has sailed from Seattle through Puget Sound and entered the straight of wuka not far from the pilot station at Port Angeles Washington Bo approaching a small boat is on its way to pick up the pilot you're turning now so you have 10° rate of turn to starboard it's going up and the speed going down 10 knots so everything's match so to say and the pilot Bo will come on the side and pick him up it's a routine operation okay Captain have a good trip we'll see you next time thank you but today the waves are making this anything but routine you see now he started rolling and if you go alongside with that condition he can damage himself this be risky for them a high risk and many Pilots have been hurt and even dead they fell between the boats and down to the water and drone we take very serious safety first Captain hammerin turns the ship to block the [Music] wind so we want to have it as smooth as possible otherwise the P will be bumping and there can be accident the water on the starboard side settles down enabling the pilot boat to make a smooth safe approach I see that the boat is not moving up and down it looks very nice now before he was moving but now he's not moving I both the alongs side one more thanks guys it off it's very smooth then it's gone perfect scale from 1 to 10 10 now we're heading north to [Music] Alaska day two of the cruise Dawns with a full day of sailing ahead time for things to rev up on some of Norwegian Joy's main attractions guys let's hurry up 20 minutes we have guests at the stern of the ship Calvin Chaw and his team are getting things set to go on the first ever go-kart track at se and trust me it's going to be a busy day we have four bookings all day the carts can reach speeds of up to 50 kmph on the 230 M long track basically everyone onjo wants to try this Speedway they run on electricity which might make for a quiet ride but speakers in the back rests let drivers experience every R and vibration of an old school go-kart in the Galaxy Pavilion other guests are driven by virtual reality with 3D visuals and games that Shake Rattle and Roll see you woohoo but the biggest thrill on this ship supered ready yeah actually sees guests swoop out off the side of the ship on the ocean Loops water slide she's awesome this is one of the best slide that we have on board here when the floor drop you don't know what going to happen you just feel like everything come right and you your stomach kind of drops and your heartbeat start C it's a fast ride 60 m in just 6 [Music] seconds for Captain hammerin it's all a far cry from the ships he first sailed on 47 years ago there's so many things I don't know really what to start when I first started I could not even think about things things like this I was on a cargo ship and it was not like this but that hasn't stopped him from indulging in some of Joy's greatest toys really nice really nice I have tested many times maybe wish we have a [Music] race it's a beautiful morning it's 4:30 a.m. on day 3 three of the crews we are going to ketan this morning pil mod approaching a local pilot is coming aboard he's coming up he's like a local adviser I brought a nice weather for you ni Sunrise morning Pilots are themselves qualified ship captains in most places they come aboard only for Port entries and exits not here as long we are on the way inside Alaska water they have one on the bridge all the time okay you want to have the con sure okay pilot has the con with narrow Straits wildlife and even ice ahead the Pilot's local knowledge and Captain Hammer's experience will be essential as Norwegian Joy guests aim to check off a Bucket List full of [Music] Adventure early in the morning on the third day of the cruise Norwegian Joy has entered Alaskan waters on route to the first Port of Call keten early risers are already making their way to the observation Lounge to take in the spectacular sunrise and surrounding scenery it's beautiful dropped that gorgeous unreal unreal it's only been like 3 days and I if it's already this gorgeous can't imagine what the rest of it's going to be like the observation Lounge takes up the entire four third of the ship on Deck 15 wrapped in Windows stretching from floor to ceiling there's no better place to enjoy the view you can see a lot from the side but when you're in the very front you get everything one deck below staff Captain Andreas carlstrom and his Lookouts keep watch they will see a smaller boats floating objects which might cause trouble for a propellers and similar but mostly small boats fishing nets by 6:00 in the morning so we have 300 M to go Captain Carl goodar hammerin is at the controls to bring the ship alongside the pier first line yesing th na miles in the end is if we could get one ahead for this storage store that would be perfect so just one okay 100 more CM very good welcome to caten katakan is one of the wetest places in North America on average more than 3 and 1/2 M of rain falls here each year but today there's not a drop in sight down on the pier how many pounds of salmon is coming 2,000 lb of salmon okay for the dinner hey Tony how are you general manager Martin Ivanov and executive chef pervine Maas are looking for some of ketchikan's other claim to fame [Music] salmon oh that's great that's what we are looking for wow that's great huh the s is caught locally then gutted and flash frozen within hours for Peak freshness tonight it will be on the buffet and getting a fresh fish is amazing even uncooked these fish are already drawing a crowd this is for you it's for you you want it now or you want it later on the buffet across town on the grounds of the old Spruce Mill some of Norwegian Joy's guests have stepped off the ship and stepped back in time ketan was an insane logging Town back in the day welcome to the Great Alaskan lumberjack show we have a great competition for you here today who's ready to meet their Lumberjacks the point of The Lumberjack Show is basically to recreate the Old Timber Carnival that used to happen in ketan Alaska every 4th of July we do 13 events we're chopping we're sa speed climbing log rolling and boom running we do it all it's a Ry Good Time Boom Shear Kyle settle and the other Lumberjacks aren't just performers we're always competing we're always trying to warn up each other for bragging rights they're competitive athletes and professional [Applause] loggers yeah it's definitely harder than it [Applause] looks it's hard on your back but it's a lot of fun what are you doing warming up oh you're warming up I don't care what even made you think she wanted you to come up there and sit on her lap well she's been waking at me the entire show I hope the crowd falls in love with it and they have a good time two the best rers out here who's going to take this win go for the helmet it's [Applause] slipping thanks for coming everybody enjoy the rest of as the day wraps up enjoy departs catch a can noran Joy now taking in Line's birth three young we're free okay free to sail there's another performance about to get underway 3 minutes to top of show everybody pleases please for the top of elements in the joy theater stage technician Lauren efforts and her team are m a complex production called elements it's got a lot going on we've got aerial we have levitation all kinds of different magic the show pays tribute to the four elements of nature earth air water and even fire we use pocket lighter fluid for a lot of the elements and then a couple of the Illusions use this mixture that we're making right now which is a combination of pocket lighter fluid and the kind of liquid charcoal that you would use when you're at home barbecue where did I put it even a small flame on board is a big deal there is a lot going on to make fire safe in any environment but particularly on stage on a cruise ship after all fire is the biggest threat to any ship we have to have a fireman on standby with us as soon as this part of the show begins to make sure that if anything goes aai we have an immediate professional response to the fire that's happening on stage we have buckets of water located on both sides that anybody can grab and take but none of those precautions enter the mind of the audience on this night Joy's guests are Swept Away with a Flawless [Applause] performance by the third evening of the cruise Norwegian Joy is well into the Alaskan stretch of the inside passage sailing from katakan to the state capital Juno on the upper decks it's smooth sailing but down in the ship's water purification plant staff chief engineer blazo stanisich is checking in on a persistent problem guys how's it going man basically changing the filters around 30 filter box since yesterday after less than 24 hours in Alaskan Waters the filters in part of Joy's water purification system are clogging up as fast as the engineers can change them this is a basically a lot of planto we get here a lot of Dey as well it's a problem that can't be avoided around here the narrow channels that weed through these islands are filled with silts leeching off glaciers and carried by the rivers and streams that empty into the Inside passage and that's making it harder for the system to take on seawater and purify it for use all over the ship I'm there in 2 minutes chief engineer Patrick Olson is called to engine control okay what uh so we having the same issue with this clogan filter as we had before where blazo delivers some bad news for the moment number three is stopped we had to stop it f completely clog it looks like it's not going to be better tonight how about the rest of them the rest running as for now but we expect the same The Galley for example is a big consumers the water park we have is another and the laundry is the third one that is consuming a lot of water we are consuming 1200 metric tons every day and with our desalination plant we have we can produce 3,700 pet 24 hours but right now as we see now we have to shut it down it's going to be a long night changing filters in the belly of the ship we also need to take water from shoreside we need to Bunker water and that is what we're going to do tomorrow and an early start tomorrow taking on fresh water in Juno day four of Norwegian Joy Alaskan cruise sees the ship docked in the capital city Juno connecting a third one down on the dock chief engineer Patrick Olson and his team are looking to get their fill well we had some issues yesterday with the Water Production our Ros Moses plans the filter got clogged so we are a little bit low with water on board so uh we are uh filling up today in Juno how are we doing we just connected First Coast so we'll continue with the second hose so we are aiming to have more than 30 tons per hour how much are we expecting today approximately around 150 to 200 tons 200 tons is not so much but it helps us I mean you don't run a cruise ship without fresh water that's uh simple as that while the engineers top up many of the ship's guests are headed up top on the mount Roberts Tramway the tra itself takes people from sea level to 1,800 ft all in about 4 and 1/2 minutes it is one of the more vertical climbing trams in North America and so it makes it for a really smooth ride any single day we can get you know 5 6,000 people riding up and down the tram the main reason people come up is for the view from here you can see of course all the downtown Juno dagas Island where the cruise ships dock the view is the main number one [Music] reason down at the other end of town two couples from the ship are taking off for an even better view they say you want you go to Alaska go to a glacier you know if you have the chance do it they're riding first class to menen Hall [Music] Glacier out of this world amazing the glacier stretches from the Juno ice field a full 21 km to mendenhal Lake on the outskirts of the city it's almost unreal it's like we're not here yeah I've never seen anything like it it's so massive you feel so small in this area wow that is amazing I can't believe we're here all right we're standing on about 800 ft of ice right now we a little uh scale this mountain side behind us here is about uh how much ice we're standing on below us oh wow we could continue up Glacier here uh for about another 12 miles until we'd hit the Juno ice field so the Juno ice field is this big reservoir of Ice uh where all these Glaciers are stemming from and that Glacier Ice flows from the ice field down these valleys and these glaciers carve up these huge valleys this is unreal this kind of mind blown I don't know how to describe it I know we really want to do something like this beautiful day here you guys really left out you know that's what everybody's telling us and makes me feel kind of smaller right now you know you know just from landing on the glacier uh just finding how gigantic everything is the ice right here is 200 years old but the Juno ice field as a whole dates back thousands of [Music] years here in Juno Alaska it is a rainforest one of only three other places in the entire world where you can stand on a glacier and actually be in a rainforest you can take your water bottle and then just fill it up right and stream here it's really refreshing it's cold and replenishing I don't think water is ever going to taste this ve this is beyond imagination here I'm just waiting to wake up it's like it's magic there's a lot more to explore here I think this is one of the best experence we've ever been on I don't know how to go home and explain to people right by 1:15 the countdown is on for Norwegian joy to depart and for its sister Ship Norwegian Bliss to take over its birth here is a need to sail on time for our sister ship is coming they have to go alongs at 2:00 they need this Bo do we have any contact with anyone on the PA agent on the dock Norwegian Joy 12 but two guests are still out touring on their own and the captain has a strict schedule to keep if the people or the guest are out by themselves they have to blame themselves after all Norwegian Bliss is already in position to dock by 1:30 we have to sail Captain Hammer and can't delay any longer you can 8,000 people wait for for two people is late it not works that way especially when that delay will hold up not one but two [Music] ships yeah take the gangways absolute ABS no problem at all it's 1:35 p.m. in Juno Norwegian Joy is ready to to depart and leave too late guests behind its sistership Norwegian Bliss is waiting to take over Joy's birth at the pier but then security security hold for one second hold just there for one second I think we have two Runners here Captain Carl gunar hammerin is the only crew member to spot the late guests security is two coming running here up but with joy now holding position such nice color of the shoe she should be more faster excellent take the gang way let go secur secur Norwegian Joy now underway from the AJ dock southbound gaso channel it's Juno you never really know no no it's a surprise every time yes as Joy departs Bliss doesn't waste any time yeah if he is fast he can be alongside 2:00 MH 2ish and Joy's Captain knows he'll have some making up to do you have to send some uh cakes next time with everyone on board the bridge Team sets a course for what is expected to be the most spectacular leg of the cruise they head south and by 400 p.m. they've reached the mouth of a fjord known as endicot arm to wind their way through the ice flows that lead to Dos [Music] Glacier today we have the opportunity to sail an over 30 m glacial fur that reaches deep into the coast mountains and deep into our glacial path towards a beautiful Doss Glacier get ready to capture the beauty and joy of Alaska we're going to come starboard to 125 anyway we have about two miles up there so can keep it take it on coming closer very good here the skill and experience of pilot Barry Alver are called upon more than anywhere else on the cruise that is from case to Case and try to find the best way together with the pilot navigation officer to we find the most safe one find Gap yeah there is one there that low flat one right now probably put a starboard but we'll we'll see how that dials out I'm going to swing through that open Gap and back one deck above the bridge the observation Lounge is packed perfect view right here as you can see this is always a wonderful spot to be in but if you want an unobstructed view you go to the bow of the ship this is the only time that we open it up as well for the guests so been out here for 2 hours just waiting for this waiting for it it's absolutely beautiful just how surreal it is how blue the icebergs actually are yeah the different blues and stuff like that is amazing for the captain though the color of the ice has a different significance altogether you more blue they are the harder they are really hard like stone or like steel so I think the lane I like right now you can see the two lower pieces they're they're almost in the middle Norwegian Joy is no ice breaker so the bridge team steers the 41 M wide ship back and forth between the larger chunks of ice we cannot go in contact with the big pieces here then we make hole in the hull the really huge pieces here rubbing the side of the hull along some of the smaller ice flows is fine but the bigger ones are pure danger if especially with up to 90% of them hidden below the water line probably leave those just a p and there's kind of a gap right in the midd looks like a gap there that's kind of what I'm looking at scanning the waters ahead as far as he can see Barry plots his course aiming for gaps about 10 m wider than the ship you need to have about 50 m 5 Z it's heavier than I expected yeah if there's too much ice then we have to stop we cannot risk anything so it's it's too much then we have stop stopping is no quick decision sailing along at 12 knots it would take about a kilometer to Halt the ship turning around now would be a major disappointment but if that's what it takes to keep the ship safe so be it safety first we are on our own up here over the next couple of hours that's hardly a concern for the guests all over the ship they're caught up in the scenery look the water PS are coming down from like in the mountain oh that is nice sick and as they reach da Glacier a special treat my plan noise go further up and then turn around to starboard a full rotation of the ship to ensure no one misses out oh it's just breathtaking it's just you can't even you see it in pictures but then when you're here it's just it's all inspiring it's just peaceful and calm where you can just kind of enjoy the experience now that they've had their fill of Alaska scenery well this one looks very nice pal texture rice meat I'll put it here it's time to fill up on Alaskan Seafood we have around 1,200 lb of Alaskan crab legs Chef rine is serving up $30,000 worth of Alaskan crab to get the fresh ones in the Alaska is one of the best way to do it it's very nice to get all the things fresh how is it are you enjoying yes thank you is it good very good you like it yeah happy guest make me happy but if today has than anything it's that many of Joy's guests have an appetite for adventure for them tomorrow's Port of Call promises a whale of a time it's day five of Norwegian Joy Alaskan cruise after yesterday's Scenic sailing to do glacer the ship has sailed overnight to icy straight Point icy straight is all about big Landscapes and Wildlife and there's no bigger Wildlife around here than the humpback whales that roam the surrounding Waters I love the boat but this is what we came for this body water is very well known for whales because of the fact that it connects to Glacier Bay and Glacier Bay pushes out all this really rich water coming off the glaciers and this attracts the Plankton and the krill and that of course attracts the whales watch for tail watch for tail here it comes here it comes there's tail tail tail tail tail tail there it is yeah there it is there there that was autic this is why people come to I straight point to watch whales because it's always a spectacular show there it is oh nice goodness here we go breath oh baby baby so we've been really treated today to this whale and breaching it's not that common but what's happening here today because we have a young whale mother and Cath together they're doing a little bit of play absolutely incredible yeah I thought we would see a little tail I didn't think we'd see the whole whale and a baby here in Alaska it never gets old whether it's the first time you've seen a whale or you've seen it hundreds of times it just never ever get old I call it [Music] Timeless other guests are looking for a different kind of [Music] thrill today we're absolutely booked got a lot of people coming up here and it's about 5,330 ft long 1330 is the elevation currently right now you get up to speeds around 60 MPH on average the first half oh my God and then it becomes a nice cruising sort of ride towards the end with six different cables each running 1600 M long the icy straight zip Rider is the largest in the world take a seat all the way back arms underneath through the sides like a back back it's a blast this is is absolutely the hardest part here getting someone into the seats I'm excited now I'm little scared have fun enjoy yourself don't forget to smile after the first 5 seconds or so you start realizing it's not so bad the big gigantic playground slide then it's done and then you wish it lasted longer I did it that was pretty cool it took about 10 seconds to get like adjusted to like wow this is fast and it's high up but then I was just like hey I'll just keep looking forward and then just breathe woo and for those looking to unwind this is a port of call unlike almost any in the world this is our favorite isn't it our favorite St it's totally natural here everything's the same we went on bear Excursion seen some beautiful brown bears we've seen whales we seen much killer whales and another on the same exursion I hope they continue to keep coming here every now and then maybe some years down the road we'll come back again really wish we could stay here more like longer after a day spent admiring the wildlife of Alaska things are about to get a little wild on board the ship first up a ridiculous dance battle in the [Music] [Applause] atrium I know D that take it up a notch but there is something in life that can't be unseen pretty scarred from that I'll never be able to not see that what do you say yeah I saw energy fine they were dancing I guess there's never going to be a doll moment so we got to keep going from one event to the next one ladies and gentlemen welcome to the show then a high energy glow-in-the-dark party in the social nightclub we always trying to get that energy up whatever we decide to do this is it this is the Pinnacle of their [Music] [Applause] Cruise after another full day at Sea Norwegian Joy is approaching the final Port of Call Victoria British Columbia Canada it's the most daunting Port Entry of the cruise it this can be difficult because it's so narrow if it's too much wind we cannot go alongside can then you have to cancel that Port stay at Sea Norwegian Joy can only dock in Victoria if the wind is below 25 knots or 46 kmph but right now it's way stronger than that 45 knots 45 knots how we doing there G Victoria pilot Tony steel has some explaining to do what have you done with the wind I know every time we do something there's some sort of a challenge yeah yes yes Victoria's notorious just for having a lot of Westerly wind it comes in through Wanda Fuca so right now we got a little bit more than normal it's a bit of a challenge of birth to come in because you really have to do a bit of a chicane to get in there to reach the birth they have to snake through a tight Gap a west wind blowing harder than 25 knots could take hold of the stern and push it hard enough for the ship to collide with the pier let's make her a 10° rate to turn to port and we'll just kind of wheel around this way with the wind as strong as it is there's no way they can approach the dock right now Victoria traffic Norwegian Joy Nori Joy Victoria traffic a little bit too much wind out here so we're going to just kind of Dodge around here so we'll stay west of the lanes and out of everybody's way instead they'll cruise around the harbor and hope that the wind dies down good morning ladies and gentlemen unfortunately we have to wait a little bit outside here there is uh do strong wind can canceling the final Port of Call is the last thing Captain hammerin wants to do to his guests they will not be happy for they have a lot of expectation to go and see things we want to be in the port that we have promised them but if it stays this windy he'll have no other choice it's just before 11:00 a.m. outside of Victoria BC Norwegian Joy should be approaching the pier but it's too windy to dock safely we're just going to wing it we're supposed to be there for 11 but uh once I start making a move here I'll give you a call so 40 so still actually more now captain hammerin and pilot Tony steel have been biting their time waiting for the wind to die down after half an hour sailing around the harbor the wind is from a Stern and it's going down we are okay to go in and we are on the way the wind is dropping down right now we have probably 20 to 25 knots of gusting wind behind us but that still puts the wind bumping up against the 25 knot limit for Norwegian joy to dock stady on z z we're just making our Final Approach nice slow safe approach coming straight in the 41 M wide ship would have to squeeze through a 70 M wide column between the dock and the Breakwater by snaking through the entrance the bridge team increases the margin of error by another 10 to 15 M we'll just poke our noses and so from this end of the dock to where the break water is is about half a ship so you got to kind of let the stern fall down and stick the bow in there creeping along at just two knots Captain hammerin eases the bow through the Gap then swings the stern slightly the st's going to fall in you like this and then it's going to and then we'll come in that 4 4 and as they come along side no further ahead no more ahead even the captain is impressed with his ship she do it by herself I don't need to do anything it's my ship you can't do it fa for than now Victoria is home to a pretty Waterfront and the second oldest Chinatown in North America but most of the ship's guests make a be line for The Butchart Gardens about a half hour drive across town from the port there are five different Gardens here with 300,000 bulbs in bloom more than 250 varieties of roses and 900 kinds of plants grown for the summer season alone oh it's way different yeah cuz the gardens you don't see this in Alaska we're looking for the Wildlife up there yeah and this is beautiful it's perfect it's [Music] calming the mood is a little different back in at the ship things are about to kick into high gear with a battle for bragging rights on the speedway my strategy is to burn the tie of the general manager are you talking to me this is number one I'm going to win today let's race you're going down okay you're going down they are [Music] losers after working hard all week it's time for this team to play [Music] [Music] [Applause] y it was awesome the captain bought me five times but he was so slow he hold me back all the timeck was so serious about winning my guys control the engines that's why and you'll never guess who won who else who else who else who else oh let's see the result I was the [Music] winner wings and beer [Music] overnight we still continue our Port yeah she's looking good Norwegian Joy sails back through Puget Sound returning to Seattle the best thing it is when we are saying bye-bye to the guest when they're living to see how they don't want to leave I was a reluctant Cruiser I didn't want to go on cruises this changed everything the level of luxury the crew were so friendly I'm a convert This ship's Alaskan debut has been both spectacular and Serene I love it you feel the nature here that you're very small even if the ship is quite big but with Adventures that Dazzle even the most veteran seaf farer I have been a SE for 47 years I've been Captain for 34 and 16 years old I want to see the world and I'm still roaming around Norwegian Joy will continue on sailing through a landscape that's as mighty as the ship itself she's the newest princess on the Seas the ship itself is beautiful sailing the Caribbean in search of ancient Treasures crystal clear waters it's like having a passport to another World an adrenaline filled Thrills I'm literally shaking but for the crew of Sky princess an unforgettable vacation calls for an allout effort it is like a magicat that never lets up this is the most dangerous turn staff is watching when you need to focus you need to [Music] focus if you're looking for a tropical Adventure the Western Caribbean is your kind of cruise is all about the white Beach beautiful water and beautiful weather and Sky princess is your kind of ship it's the newest vessel in the princess Fleet promising elegant State rooms please take it to the balcony sure sir and Next Level customer service let's get a drink yeah that turns a tap of your phone into your favorite drink thank you Amanda yeah thank you okay it's coming in pile Bo pile Bo Sky you can make your way in in command Captain Michael tuvo The Challenge on this particular Cruise are Port that are not easiest to get in or to get out with a long vessel and a wide vessel into a tight Gap from Fort Lauderdale Florida Sky princess will head south then West for four stops in the Western Caribbean cosmel Mexico B City Raton Honduras and Costa Maya Mexico after a full day at Sea they'll return to Florida having covered more than 3700 km over the week long cruise up on the bridge I'll be Navigator one staff is going to be ups and car is going to be a captain tubo lays out the tricky maneuver he'll have to pull off to sail out safely when we here we stop and we swing in clear going to switch into the center we have the the clear view of the channel and we see where we going he'll need every member of the bridge team on alert to get his mega ship through a tight rotation if you see anything that doesn't seems right you say all loud that's most important down at the very bottom of the ship in the engine room staff engineer Luigi granino team is checking on the ship's massive power plant we have four engines two of them are 12 cylinders and other two are 14 cylinders V shape I have H 10 mechanics which are under me and a team of 12 wipers which maintain clean and died the enre ship these engines are only a couple of months old but Luigi isn't about to let a small issue turn into a big problem sometimes even brand new ship can bring some problem so that's why we need to keep checking regardless of how old is the engine today that means measuring the crankshaft that helps Drive the engine's Pistons right now we are thinking if the crunk shaft is turning perfectly straight or it's bending for some reason get very rough Su condition you may have a like a deflection of the crunk shop the clock is ticking the engineers can only perform checks and repairs like this when the ship is in Port being checked all measurement are within the ranges so I'm happy with that no more than two hours the engine will be back again available there's plenty of action out on the pier as well high above the dock a crane is swapping out some of the canisters that contain inflatable life rafts this is part of our annual maintenance is a large life rra the weight of this is 1. two t and can hold up to8 survivors the raft inflate instantly when the lines securing them to the ship are pulled majority of the crew member they will Evacuate the ship with the life rra in an emergency the guests would Abandon Ship onto Sky princess's life boats a life boat which we use also as a water shutle the capacity of that is 2 for2 survivors so this is the last one on the top yeah yeah no issues all smooth everything is very well very well the life raft swap may be going well but it's thrown a ranch in the works for inventory manager Michael Ramos bung gag morning guys all good you got the lobsters already not yet lobsters didn't come yet his Supply trucks can't drive under the crane four or five trucks usually come at the same time this time we are only allowed two trucks at a time we we have about 175 tons of food beverage and hotel stuff coming in today more than 10,000 L of beer 14,000 bottled water about 42 tons of fresh produced vegetable and fruits there any any more stuff you're waiting critical stuff we are waiting for tomatoes Tomatoes we normally finish 230 I reckon today maybe we finish about 4:00 here's the hitch Sky princess is supposed to leave at 400 p.m. we need to move on maybe 3:45 that's where we need to really hurry up and finish everything over the next 6 hours every's in motion as more than 3,500 guests come aboard for the week-long cruise just you that's wonderful do you want to tap your a in there sir you can see how quick we can get him through we're hoping like within 45 seconds or a minute okay Henry you're fine Suzanne very good thanks very [Music] much by 4:00 the provisions are all aboard even the missing 3 and 1/2 tons of tomatoes all clear a thank you after all clear on the bridge captain tuo and his team start pulling away from the pier we ready yes we ready okay we can go two and twoing up to get out of the harbor they'll creep backwards then rotate the 330 M long ship clockwise before lining up with the exit Channel all Line's clear forward as well after all clear want to see what's happening and is see it can be the stern is opening or the bow is closing or both half now increasing while Captain tuo drives the ship shortly we start Evolution about starboard let me know if you have any concern his second in Command Staff Captain Joan carday keeps in touch with Lookouts posted at the stern and on the lower decks we can use both Thruster to to swing around below the water line the captain engages three bow thrusters to drive the front of the ship to starboard at the same time three more thrusters draw the rear of the ship in the opposite direction to Port together these six powerful propellers rotate Sky princess on a dime this turn threr is pushing the just turn this way the B thrusted that way so we create a momentum rotating nice and gentle local pilot Michael Cunningham coordinates with Port Authority and police boats to keep smaller boats away from the bow where no one can see them there's a sheriff's boat there holding the traffic protecting us with the bow lining up up to the exit Channel starboard 30 takes steering in the center the captain transfers the controls to the center of the bridge an engine 65 revon 2 take engine Sky princess sails out of the channel and enters Open Sea thank Youk see pleas than Captain with that Captain juvo turns Sky princess South on now way to C out thato is just coming up good the cruise is underway and the party extends deep into the [Applause] night it's absolutely pure [Applause] go but it's no party the next morning sounded anyway okay when an alarm sends some crew to their alert stations and others in search of answers the people are panicking now and there's no way for us to communicate Sky princess is spending a full day at Sea on route to coel Mexico by 8:00 a.m. with breakfast coffee and exercise the ship's guests are settling into their morning routines and Captain Michael tuvo good morning is making his morning Browns morning friends good morning how we doing good likewise oh I normally do that this is great here we go I try to walk around and see every guest so tomorrow is going to be sunny and then the day after is going to be sunny and then and then after that they're going to sprinkle a little bit of more sun on it good day captain in the ship now I'm captain in the ship if you come to stay at my house for a week I'll make the point to come and see you every morning and say oh good morning how's your day morning he a big ship H good morning good morning where you from cforia California where San Diego me too n what yeah I live in CB then around 9:30 an alarm sounds all over the [Music] ship it's chaos in the back office for guest services manager Gonzalo Martin sorry it is yes don't you worry ma'am we will stop it as soon as we can okay so you'll find that people are panicking now uh we do not know for sure what's going on but all the calls are coming through cuz the guests don't know what is happening so we just uh keep on answering the phones associate Hotel general manager Cara winter finds out it's a false alarm so I'm actually getting quite a lot of calls from the guests um yeah we can't we can't make a PA announcement this is the issue we're having issues with the PA service there's no way for us to communicate Comm of these guests that this is actually all under control hello uh there was this system glitch so we need to walk around and see that uh it's a system glit nothing to worry about now they have to get the word out to the guests in person everything okay Mar here you want me to go to the to the corridors to say the guys everything so if there was an emergency all our teams will come into position and from there on we will advise guests the PA system and the T channels as well the alarm should have shut off after about 5 minutes but it sounds on and off for almost half an hour then find finally the crew alert signal was sounded continuously there is no cause for an alarm this was due to a technical fault and there is no action required by our guests good after all there are far better distractions today everything has been pristine the ship itself is beautiful the drinks the food may I have one slice of pepperoni down in the galley on Deck six give me some of the fish please yeah a little bit oil so you need to flip it over and keep it a little bit more longer executive chef Guido jitco and his cooks are catering to whatever the guest's appetites desire we're producing around about to 18,000 dishes in the daily basis Chef Guido is in charge of the menus for 25 venues on board let's give it a taste it's a huge group to be managing and of 24 7 operation Good there are 14 gals with a crew of 287 people and some big machines to get the job done this is the hamburger machine which you we use uh daily this burger can do around 2,000 to 2,100 per 1 hour oh they love it they love it we have 3,500 passenger every day we have to serve them so this one help us to wash our vegetables and the fruits for everyday job every day around 65 to 70 cages of vegetables per day the high-tech doesn't stop in the galley down in the ship's laundry so we have a giant tunnel washer and basically this one is immense you can imagine um on a cruise ship of this nature you can go up to 5,000 people at a time right we're talking about 20,000 towels for showering facecloth towels all of these things throw it down the shoot comes down here so dear and his team then load it onto the trolley goes through the washing process they press it and voila up on the bridge up senior Second Officer K Anne Wright is preparing to take over the watch hey good visibility we have east north easterly winds and 18 to 20 knots be able to see technically I'd be fifth in command I went to sea when I was 18 as a beauty therapist and decided that I really loved life at Sea yes change Navigator you have the con I have the con you have the con Captain was really great to me and decided to let me um work in my time off with the Deb guys and then I'd run back to the cabin once we were alongside and go and do my actual job for the day okay so we're on route to coell for a 6:00 standby below tomorrow we're going to be keeping this speed yeah okay not happy very good so I started my C sh when I was 21 I qualified when I was 25 four years later I've managed to go from third officer to see Second Officer side visible port side okay very good Captain Maybe maybe Captain so for me yeah it's um something that's growing on me report anything you see and if you have any concerns at any time please do not be afraid to speak out day three the island of KMEL appears on the horizon like nice water to see the water when the light come up is there beautiful beautiful water at this port of call the Wonders extend beyond the crystal clear waters of the sea to the underground rivers of an ancient civilization 5:15 a.m. on the third day of the cruise good morning good morning morning good morning good morning Mr pal hi Sky princess is approaching the first Port of Call KMEL Mexico good everybody happy to proceed double check with ACR we are happy to go we are happy to go how we going down on Deck four in the engine control room go ahead okay 3GS propulsion all six thrusters will pass you control okay 3dg all six thrusters and passing his propulsion on the bridge yes chief engineer Fabio belli and his team pass control of the ship's power plant to the bridge everything from the four diesel electric generators to the thrusters and propellers okay propulsion of frosters tested correct on Bridge control Brides at the kind of a man down here with with this switch we bypass the control from the bridge and we can can we can take control down here directly coming towards the pier the current is pushing us on beautiful speed one one and half it's a straight shot into the pier 1.3 looking good we're looking very good second in Command Staff Captain joavan cardile brings the ship alongside the dock just the way Captain tuo likes it at the moment 3 302 go 3 0 increasing the engine yes gently drifting in or looking good beautiful beautiful water here beautiful place CU man always beautiful place as a little reward an order of espresso for two the passengers are eager to get out and explore the island good morning one group of guests takes the ferry over to the mainland for a short drive down the coast to the sacred Waters of the ancient Mayan [Music] people it became the main source of water for the Maya people and it also has a very important religious or spiritual relation for them the Mayans uh believe that the Cotes are the entrance to the underworld there are more than seven ,000 cenotes found in the Yucatan Peninsula they were formed over millions of years by water seeping through Limestone on the surface to create underground caves then Rivers eventually the Limestone dries out and collapses to reveal a sinkhole or in Spanish a [Music] Cenote awesome so the main activity here is we have a chance to enjoy the waters from yukatan and of course have that amazing cliff jumping we have in this place which is a lot of fun [Music] [Applause] too we have cenotes like this one that is half cave half open cenotes and we have Cotes that you can only go there by scuba diving they are floated with water they are all connected because thees are underground river systems that once you enter to aote it's like a maze each not has its own unique mix of freshwater and saltwater and its own combination of plants and Wildlife it's very clear a little chilly but refreshing because it's pretty warm out it's a glorious blue we have Cotes only in the peninsula of Yucatan nowhere else in the world no more senes like the ones we have here we just find them here so it's a unique experience and need some memory for for Life [Music] Time by 5:00 p.m. the team on the bridge is ready to depart and the last few guests are coming aboard two guests are still out standing tell me everybody's on board okay B safety officer Rafael LA on Sante will guide Sky princess out of Port St is opening okay the wind is prevailing here we pined about here the current is pushing backwards as well he's third in command of the ship so use the current to turn to startop it okay good moving in the center both rafhael and staff Captain joavan card hold Master's licenses that means they're fully qualified to drive the ship you wait for so long to do it and then when you do it the first time you want to do every time every time right of course no one ever forgets their first time first time I was three stri officer Navigator arrival SE and I had to stop the safire princess less than ft from another ship bow to Bow first time driving ever 285 I may spy of the [Music] day with Sky princess out to seea the guests relax using apps that link with wearable technology called the ocean Medallion the chicken clo they take advantage of service that aims for a whole new level guests can just lounge around on the outside deck order a burger if they want sunscreen they can even order that the medallions also link with a sophisticated Wi-Fi network to help guests find their friends oh she's by the pool and they help out the stateroom attendance when I I walk up to the room then I I check my device so they can clean the rooms without disturbing anyone if the rooms are empty then why while we're doing this room we can plan which room will be next the same technology can also help the bridge team locate passengers in an emergency so you can go and rescue them or or escort them there where they supposed to be is very big relief because one of the worst call is the one where you you know somebody's missing it all synchronizes with five state-of-the-art satellite domes at the very top of the ship that's why Chris Aon performs regular critical checks what we're trying to do is we're actually checking the tracking configurations we have 20 satellites that rotate around the earth they're about 5,000 Mi up in space as the vessel moves we have to be able to to point the antenna very accurately to keep that two-way communication going through more than 120 km of cable the network connects to thousands of sensors all over the ship to relay Wi-Fi and keep The Medallion platform running so Chris can't let even the tiniest issues slip by we can have belts Motors gears that can be worn out or break we'll check the fiber optics to make sure that we have our signal quality that looks good it's just after 5:00 a.m. on day four of the cruise after sailing overnight from kmal Sky princess is approaching Biz City on the surface it looks like nothing but Open Water to reach the harbor but the only way in is to follow a twisting Channel dug into the sea floor turn too late or too wide and in a heartbeat the ship will run ground in the shallow mud beyond the boys yeah this is what this is the most dangerous turn right here this is an Nest point about no one knows that better than B's pilot markk Rodriguez the wind is normally coming from the from a easterly direction and it with the area so small if you fail turn then you end up with the wind pushing you all the way and and that's a little bit dangerous with first officer Stuart Chapel in control they enter the first turn of the channel a hard left to the port side of the ship let's go to 18° turn the yes but in the middle of the turn Cadet Natasha McMahon sees there's a problem the washers on the sou side the ship's stabilizing pumps are failing and skyprint princess is leaning hard to the starboard side I don't know if the pumps are pump in the wrong way on approach to bise City Sky princess is entering into a hard Portside turn but the tanks designed to keep the ship level are malfunctioning we're using this tank for keeping the ship upu right during the alteration of course the water doesn't go to the right direction when the ship does a hard turn it naturally leans to the outside so they pump water to the tanks on the inside of the turn to counter the movement but now the pumps are doing the opposite sending water to the outside tanks causing the ship to tilt over even more we have an issue with the healing tipes the staff Captain troubleshoots with Cadet Natasha McMahon their voices barely above a whisper so it's been selected for but it's been pumping over to Star the pump malfunction is a serious issue but the tone on the bridge barely changes I always tell my younger officers the most important is not be afraid it's not how old you are is how mature you are and how focused you are on the job you're doing the staff captain and Natasha cut off the flow of water to the tanks and reset the software that governs the pumps she working that one's working a few minutes later the wind is Sing Us St onto the road boys so let's reduce back down to 15° rated turns they approach the tightest turn of the entry it's best to keep a little bit east the TRU am find in the Middle Ground here this time the pumps and tanks do their job and the ship stays level by 700 a.m. Sky princess is parked in bise City Harbor now it's time for a fleet of local catamarans to get to work shuttling the guests to shore they call it tendering today we have a huge operation carrying about six tender boats each one carrying anywhere from 100 to 250 passengers Shor side takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes okay well let me be the first to welcome you to my beautiful country welcome to Sunny Bly while Jessica's tenders shuttle most of the passengers to shore a lucky few scuba divers are on their way to check off a bucket list dive believe is one of the most beautiful place in the Caribbean to dive it's very hot very sunny very nice and calm The Reef here is part of the largest Reef system in the Atlantic Ocean it's home to more than 500 species she of fish and more than 60 types of coral it stretches more than 1,000 km making it second in the world only to the Great Barrier Reef off Australia the meso americ Reef here is absolutely gorgeous so to be able to do cosmel B Roan all along the same line is is unreal Casey Hogan and Colin Sim are diving at almost every stop on this Cruise it's like having a passport to another part of the [Music] [Music] world absolutely fantastic it's really nice to see a healthy Reef system that's so vibrant full of life [Music] it's not just what the divers see swimming around the reef that Thrills them it's the little surprises hidden inside the coral so many little lobsters lots of lobsters one fish seems quite eager to be one of the gang having that rora swim with us for pretty much that whole die was pretty interesting as well you kept nibbling out our tanks and trying to get at us so that was a lot of fun remoras have large SU on the tops of their heads so when one wants to stick around it really wants to stick around it was actually attaching itself to my leg for a while they're usually looking for a big fish to latch on to so that they don't have to swim themselves sharks and bigger fish we see them all the time the rora hitchhiking might be a little unwelcome but Casey finds a more generous friend in one of the shrimps a little shrimp um they'll come up and clean your fm I was trying to pretend I was a fish and it was kind of nibbling away at my finger a manicure at the bottom of the sea how about that today we're doing tender 11 15 and 17 on Deck five senior Second Officer Carrie Anne is checking one of the most important pieces of equipment on board part of our monthly Lifeboat Inspections just to make sure that the overall maintenance is and the lifeboats are ready for evacuation if need be if you want to start getting the inventory out Oliver we're basically making sure that all the power supply is good porn working okay so lighting okay very good so if the master was to give the order the abandoned ship then that's when we load all of our guests inside and we go away from the ship which of course we hope to never be part of two buckets with a boil boy and Bor and two sponges in a real disaster K Anne would be among the last few crew members to abandon ship I'm actually the one that's left to drive the ship in an emergency so I will go up to the bridge as a navigator I will be on the bridge until the last minute driving the ship under the Captain's Order this is our food rations probably not the most flavorful but it will do the job to keep you alive have you ever tried it I haven't no of you I don't want to to be honest with you yeah early the next morning the island of ratan Honduras comes into view we a day of sundrenched beaches exotic encounters and then and Highwire Thrills awaits it's the sixth morning of the cruise requesting six thers on bridge Sky princess is approaching the port of Mahogany Bay on the island of ratan Honduras so ratan arrival the challenge of this port is the current and the wind fresh very fresh Breeze 30 knots they'll start by rotating the ship counterclockwise 180° then they'll back up staying tight to the red boys and battling both a 55 kmh wind and a strong current moving away from the danger yes start moving a St one not a St I'm just looking at the Gap soon slowly we start bringing the stor into local pilot Vicente salarino Has Come Aboard to help guide the ship to the dock got wind from these in this channel you want to make sure you stay close to the righted side of not you be blown over there on it to the west side as we go vente is a bit of a legend in these Waters I've been sailing for 32 years actually I brought the first ship into the port of Moga B so I'm going into 11 years here watching I know I know I know you are so am I staff is watching everybody's focused below the water line Captain tubo calls on the power of all six thrusters to delicately push back against the force of the current and wind you see the St is gently gently coming now I control the speed because I don't want to go too fast right now you got wind waves and current pushing you to the West the wind is at 20 knot so you can see it's already reducing as they close in on the pier the land off the port side now blocks the wind and current if the captain's not careful the power he's applying could suddenly send the ship into the dock look at the difference when you're inside these are the moments this Captain lives for controlling every bit of his 330 M long ship as if it were part of his own body redu to five on the bow and reduceing to seven on the St for me you need to be happy in life you need to have a laugh and a giggle every day but when you need to focus you need to focus 45 5 minutes after starting the rotation there we go it's not an easy port to come in it was good a lot of focus you see at my age 21 you don't get silver hair without a bit of a challenge daily ah bra my friend stuffy coffe stuffy good job good job my friend Mahogany Bay is a bit of a rarity in the Caribbean hop on a airlift next door to the dog and you're at a full service beach in just a few minutes just the ticket for most Cruisers others head Inland for a trek through the woods and a visit with some pretty cool [Music] creatures lble limo Park is a eco-friendly Nature Park where you get to interact with Macos monkeys iguanas and there's the slot Sami he's a Treo species most of the animals come from the mainland Honduras there were pets people had as pets they couldn't take care of they are my babies the birds are all Native to Hur us including Tans and the Honduran national bird the Scarlet MAA their wings are not CLI so they go but they comes right back to the park the real attraction though is Monkey Town these are white-faced kosan monkeys there's 26 in total they go as far as 2 miles away from the park and comes right back to Monkey Town eight of the monkeys arrived here as rescue animals 18 more have been born here this is the highlight of the for the monkeys as the afternoon winds down back at Mahogany Bay assistant hotel director Cara and some of her staff are heading high up into the hills we're going ziplining get some Adrenaline Rush going and then take the ship back on later on bye the zip lines here stretch up to 480 5 m long enough to Thrill everyone and terrify a few all right I'm dying inside all right it won't turn right [Music] turn just look at my hands I'm literally shaking but that was an amazing experience it's been another full day on and off the ship we want more [Applause] [Music] SK excellent but the end of this cruise is already in sight tomorrow it's the final Port of Call and an opportunity to visit a sacred and ancient treasure that may soon disappear [Music] day six Dawns with Sky princess at the pier in costaa Mexico 3 hours Inland the ship's guests take a journey back in time to the ancient Mayan city of kahun lck the ruins here stretch out over 8 and2 hectares in the form of pyramids citadels and Courtyards this is a great experience and the kids love climbing so I think they're having a b to doing that the Mayans built these structures as far back as 300 BC the most treasured site is the 10 m tall Temple of masks built between 250 and 600 [Music] AD The Masks had been buried for centuries before they were discovered in 1968 [Music] preserving them has become a daunting challenge for archaeologist Sandra bellario and her team with a budget that allows them to work on the restoration only one month a year they will soon have just one option after that the original masks will be buried and covered by the replicas and these ancient Treasures will disappear Once [Music] More by 600 p.m. Sky princess pulls out of Costa the final full day of the cruise is spent at Sea sailing more than 1300 kilm back to Florida here's the vacation okay good okay that the P back 65 RPM 65 ahead on two by 4:30 on day 8 using speed up ahead on to 50 RPMs reducing speed 50 head on two Sky princess is creeping back into Fort Lauderdale 5.3 knots it's low on the B 25% rafhael takes over to bring Sky princess alongside the dock so what I'm going to do now I'm going to put the bow pretty much in the wind just before 5:30 we are in position for our Mark Sky princess is back where it all began look at that look at that running breast line celebration coffee for the guests it's been a week full of beauty fun and Adventure getting so lucky with the weather we had Sun every single day it was just really quiet beautiful Waters it's really it was like kind of amazing it's kind of out of like a movie we've loved it oh yeah jeez the end of the cruise has been a beautiful beautiful crew is we were blessed sunny sunny beautiful day beautiful ports for captain tuvo and his crew that's meant a lot of early mornings and long days most of the people don't realize how much work there is behind the scene to make everything happen but this team wouldn't have it any other way when you do something with a passion you do every day and you're happy about it and you are driven by by a a force that is inside of you so as Sky princess reies to do it all over again there's only one thing to say Ching ah [Music] he
