[Music] rincon de la VAR the old woman's corner at over 6,000 feet above sea level it's the tallest volcano in Costa Rica's Northwest region shrouded in mystery its name comes from an ancient legend that tells of a girl being thrown into the crater by her angry father she spends eternity walking the jungle as a recluse with the power to heal the sick the story has merit because simply walking this jungle and breathing this air rejuvenates and reminds us that no matter the circumstances life abide [Music] [Music] the rivers and waterfalls throughout the park feed one Acosta's watershed and in the wet season provide iconic tropical landscape [Music] it's an active volcano that last erupted in 2011 and it's life is apparent in the geothermal activity visible throughout the park fumaroles make visible the constant activity just below the surface of the jungle hot springs and mud pots churn boiling water and minerals into nature's volcanic soup this will help your cold either it's me or it's the steam coming out of there that smells but I am NOT taken about here because that mud pot boils at a hundred and six Celsius which according to my superhumanly fast calculation is about two hundred and twenty-three degrees Fahrenheit I am NOT going for a swim in there but I could use it the trunk of this huge kapok tree carves out a pretty big space on the jungle floor while the tall branches are a habitat for wildlife unto themselves there was a piercing sound coming from those branches and I looked up to see a flock of parrots taking off above us [Music] this is a mutt Apollo which means killer stick named appropriately because it survives in dark forests where a competition for sunlight is fierce by surrounding another tree and sucking the life out of it leaving a hollow shell behind and continuing the cycle of life [Music] it's interesting that these vines that go between the trees are actually a signal that it's dying because this is how these trees travel from one to another so what is a comfortable swing is also the death knell for this tree mother nature nothing wrong with it and that's the name of the game here the cycle of life and survival no doubt about it here nature always reclaims what's hers it's a law of the jungle [Music]
