DNA Extraction Experiment Lecture
Presenter
Dr. Jeffrey Tro
Senior Vice President of Operations at Mir Genetic Labs
Overview
Simple kitchen-based experiment to extract your own DNA.
DNA is the code of life and codes for everything you are.
The process involves five simple steps using common household items.
Materials Needed
Table Salt (Sodium Chloride):
Required for creating the salt solution.
Water:
Use a clear glass or beaker.
Measuring Tools:
1/4 cup and 1/2 cup measurements.
Graduated cylinder for precise measurement.
Containers:
Clear glass for saltwater and gargled solution.
Disposable cup for gargling.
Dishwashing Soap:
Two drops needed.
Rubbing Alcohol (70% Isopropanol):
For the final step.
Steps to Extract DNA
Salt Solution Preparation
Combine 3 teaspoons or 1 tablespoon of table salt with 500 ml (approx. 2 cups) of water.
Stir until the salt is completely dissolved.
Gargling Step
Measure 50 ml of the salt solution using a graduated cylinder.
Use a disposable cup for gargling.
Swirl and gargle the solution in the mouth for 1 full minute.
Spit the gargled solution into a clear glass.
Add Dish Soap
Add two drops of dishwashing soap to the gargled solution.
Stir gently to avoid creating bubbles.
Add Rubbing Alcohol
Pour 100 ml or about half a cup of rubbing alcohol into the solution.
Observation
Wait for 3 to 4 minutes to see the DNA precipitate.
Experiment Execution
Volunteer:
Michelle is the guinea pig for this demonstration.
Outcome:
In about 3–4 minutes, you can observe the extracted DNA, described as the "code of life."
Conclusion
This experiment is a fun and educational way to visualize your own DNA using simple household materials.
Encouragement to try at home.
