Overview

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely removing and replacing the fingerprint reader in a Framework Laptop. It covers necessary preparations, disassembly, installation, and reassembly steps.

Preparation and Power Down

  • Power off the Framework Laptop via Windows or Linux shutdown options.
  • Unplug the power cable from the USB-C Expansion Card.
  • Close the lid and place the laptop upside down on a soft, non-marring surface.
  • Use a T5 screwdriver to unscrew the five fasteners on the Bottom Cover (they remain attached).

Removing the Input Cover

  • Flip the laptop over, open the lid to around 120 degrees.
  • Carefully lift and flip the Input Cover, keeping the Touchpad Cable attached unless necessary.
  • Avoid excessive force; only lift from the bottom right corner.
  • Wait up to 30 seconds after shutdown for full power-off (LEDs stop flashing).

Fingerprint Reader Removal

  • Use a T5 screwdriver to remove three fasteners from the silver bracket holding the Fingerprint Reader.
  • Carefully lift and set aside the silver bracket.
  • Disconnect the Fingerprint Cable by flipping up the black latch and pulling the cable out.
  • Use the PH0 bit to unscrew the fastener holding the Fingerprint Reader.
  • Gently lift the Fingerprint Reader from the Input Cover.

Fingerprint Reader Installation

  • Align the new Fingerprint Reader module's notch with the corresponding notch on the Bottom Cover.
  • Place the module in the correct position.
  • Use the PH0 bit to secure the fastener in the new Fingerprint Reader.
  • Insert and secure the Fingerprint Cable with the black latch.

Securing and Reassembling Components

  • Place the silver bracket back over the module and fasten it with three T5 screws.
  • Ensure the Touchpad Cable is fully inserted and secured with the black latch.
  • Flip and align the Input Cover on the Bottom Cover; use light pressure to fit (covers are magnetic).
  • Close the laptop, turn it upside down, and re-tighten the five bottom fasteners (do not over-tighten).

Recommendations / Advice

  • Avoid disconnecting the battery connector unless replacing the battery, mainboard, or speakers to prevent accidental damage.
  • Do not use powered screwdrivers to avoid damaging fasteners.
  • Confirm all connectors are secure before reassembling the laptop.
