The human body is an extremely interesting thing. From evolution to bizarre facts about human body parts to crazy body features, there is a lot to learn about our genes and DNA. What do we know about the genes that determine who we are and what we look like? Genes are sections or segments of DNA that are carried on the chromosomes and determine specific human characteristics, such as height or hair color. Because every person has about 25,000 different genes, the number of possible combinations is almost endless. On top of these endless possibilities, we're also susceptible to genetic anomalies or mutations. There are just so many interesting things about the human body as well as human body parts that we don’t know, and researchers are learning more and more every day. A gene mutation is a permanent alteration in the DNA sequence that makes up a gene and differs from most people. Evolution just wouldn’t be possible without the endless possibilities our DNA offers or the mutations springing up now and again to bestow new attributes on living things. Distichiasis. If only every woman was born with distichiasis, they would no longer have a need for mascara, fake eyelashes or lash extensions. Distichiasis, otherwise known as double eyelashes, is a dominant trait, which means it’s passed down directly from a parent to future generations. This mutation isn't always easy to spot, as it may just appear like you have more lashes or a fuller set than the average person. Dr. Aaron Fay, an ophthalmic plastic surgeon at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston told NBC News, 'What happens in distichiasis is that a hair grows where there is supposed to be an oil gland on what's considered the wet part of the eyelid.' Many people could have double eyelashes and not even notice, having never heard of the mutation before. According to the biography 'Elizabeth' by J. Randy Taraborrelli, Elizabeth Taylor is one celebrity with double eyelashes. 9. Anisocoria. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, anisocoria is a condition in which a person has unequal pupil sizes. This can often make people look like they have two different colored eyes when they do not. Anisocoria, in most cases, is present at birth and the difference in pupil sizes is usually less than a millimeter difference between the right and left eye. It affects about 20 percent of the population, states the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Sometimes the difference in pupil sizes can be a lot larger, such as when anisocoria is due to a nerve palsy or a traumatic eye injury. The late singer David Bowie is an example of a more noticeable version of anisocoria. Bowie was born with blue eyes but got into a fistfight as a teenager, and after getting punched in the left eye, his pupil permanently dilated. The severe anisocoria made him look like he had a blue right eye and a nearly black left eye. Speaking of some of the most bizarre body features in the world, do you know the percentage of women who have ‘super vision’? Well, keep watching until the very end of this video to find out to find out this unique fact about the human body! 8. Werewolf syndrome. Werewolf syndrome is the nickname of the mutation that causes a person to be born with excess hair. This mutation, known as hypertrichosis, is a condition characterized by excessive hair growth anywhere on a person's body, states Wikipedia. The hair growth can’t be stopped, it can only be slowed down. You can be born with it or develop it later on, but those born with it usually suffer from more than one genetic mutation. Werewolf syndrome is a rare genetic disease so chances are you've never even seen this body feature before. 7. Webbed toes. Webbed toes or even fingers, also known as Syndactyly, are typically discovered at birth. According to Wikipedia, it’s when the digits become fused together and form a webbed appearance between the toes or fingers. This rare occurrence happens to 1 in every 2,000-3,000 babies. Geneticists haven’t really figured out why it occurs or how to predict when it will occur. It’s possible for two parents without Syndactyly to produce a child with it. Syndactyly can be dormant in the genes and passed down to later generations. Syndactyly doesn’t have to be inherited though, and can simply be a mutation of the individual. Keep watching as we continue to count down the most remarkable and bizarre body features and surprising facts about the human body in the world that you probably didn’t know about! 6. Short sleepers: For tired moms, or teenagers pulling all-nighters to finish their latest assignments, this next genetic anomaly might sound like a dream come true. There’s a genetic mutation that actually allows you to function with less sleep. Who in the world would have thought such a thing could exist, right?! Usually diagnosed in adolescence, short sleepers syndrome means you’re genetically wired to survive off less sleep than others. Nicknamed 'short sleepers,' people who have this mutation don’t need a lot of sleep to feel refreshed and ready to go. According to sleepeducation.org, short sleepers regularly feel alert and refreshed after sleeping less than 6 hours per night and can function normally during the day. 5. Cleft chin. A cleft chin refers to a chin with a Y-shaped dimple in the middle, writes Healthline. Cleft chins are an inherited trait caused when the two halves of the jaw bone (or muscle) don’t quite fuse properly during development. More common in European populations such as Germany, where rates reach approximately 10 percent in men, cleft chins are a feature many celebrities have become famous for having. 4. Adermatoglyphia. Most of us have heard at one point or another that fingerprints are unique to each individual, so what does it mean when you’re born with no fingerprints at all? This genetic condition, known as adermatoglyphia, leaves people without fingerprints. Adermatoglyphia, states Wikipedia, is an extremely rare genetic disorder, and there are only four known extended families in the world which are affected by this condition. 3. Bone density: Low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5 is one of the genes that control your bone density. A mutation in this gene can cause the gene to ramp up bone density to a point where they're nearly impossible to break, hence the term 'unbreakable bones.' It was first brought to the attention of scientists when a kid from Midwest America was in a horrible car wreck and walked away without so much as a fractured finger, states the-scientist.com. Upon closer inspection, it was found that no one in his family had ever broken a bone, even the 93-year old grandparent. 2. The Mallen streak. The Mallen streak, or poliosis, is a patch or streak of hair completely without pigment that you acquire from birth. Fictional characters Cruella de Vil, Sweeney Todd, and Rogue from X-Men are best known for having this unique look. The Mallen streak can be hereditary, although it doesn’t have to be. This condition is usually associated with the hair of the head, writes Medical News Today, but it can affect any hairy area of the body, including the eyebrows and eyelashes. The lack or absence of melanin is what makes that white streak present in the hair. Mallen streak isn’t easy to cover up either, as it won’t hold dye well, so fixes are only temporary. 1. Heterochromia. Heterochromia is a fancy way of saying that your eyes are two different colors. Once considered bizarre, this unique look is now considered a stunning feature after many celebrities embraced their hybrid eyes. There are three types of Heterochromia, the first being two completely different colored eyes, such as one blue one brown, the second is having one eye with two colors in it, almost like the eye is divided into two parts, and the third occurrence is when there is a distinctly different color around the iris, giving the eye a halo effect. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, there are many types and causes of heterochromia. An infant can be born with it or develop it soon after birth. In these cases, it is called congenital heterochromia. Approximately 6 out of 1000 will inherit heterochromia, and only a handful of them will have it be visibly noticeable. Now that you've made it to the end of this video on surprising facts about human body parts, here’s some interesting information about vision that you probably didn’t know about! According to a study published in the Journal of Vision, roughly 12% of women have tetrachromatic 'supervision.' Because we have three types of cones in our eyes, it's believed that this gave us an evolutionary edge as hunter-gatherers as we were better able to spot fruit and berries. Color Blindness is when one of the cones isn’t working properly. But what if instead of disabling one of the cones, a mutation increased the range of colors it was able to detect? If the mutation occurred in a man it would likely only result in a slightly shifted color spectrum. But in a woman, if one of her X chromosomes had this mutation and the other one didn’t, it would hypothetically result in her possessing the ability to see an increased range of colors undetectable by most people. So what do you think of the some of the most surprising facts about human body parts that were mentioned in this video? The human body is a pretty cool thing, right?
