Tosh the Drummer's Journey and Insights

all right all right all right you guys want the video of me doing my warmup so here we go what was the lifechanging gig for you so far literally within the span of a week I got machine Kelly Young Thug and Bad Bunny I think the first thing where I I couldn't believe I was playing for the band was Fallout Boy though they started as a band two months before I was born and we talk about it all the time that's so crazy what's up I'm Mike jaari I'm Tasha the drummer I'm here with Tosh the drummer and this is low to the crafts so when you like this gig you got coming up in March hour and a half set right yeah you knew the hits you got to learn you know an hour and 22 more minutes of songs yeah do you ever get nervous that you're going to forget have you ever forgotten on stage because that's got to be a the worst if you do forget because you're the drummer and the train's coming off the tracks if you forget and it starts sounding like shoes in a dryer right like has that happen and does that come across your mind one time and I was going so I'll answer the first question and no I don't really get nervous just because I'm like like right now I'm like I have a month and a half like that's like so much time like I've had to learn sets in like a day literally yeah so but the one time I [ __ ] up super bad on stage was with Fallout Boy and it was I only did two shows with them and then Andy came back so on the second show The Last Song of the night Saturday and we're coing and I'm like I don't [ __ ] remember how the pre-course goes I'm like oh no I'm like I don't remember I literally and so I like I'm staring at Pete won I go I I don't remember it and I'm like playing he's like what and I'm like I don't remember how the precourse goes and I'm like trying to say this like in the talk back Mike trying to tell him what's going on and he's like uh okay so he just starts counting just one two three and I'm like f so I just literally until we got to the chorus and just faked my way through it and luckily like cuz the drums kind of cue the chorus on that song So luckily like Patrick is so good at everything he does and he just like came into the course I was like okay here we are and we like got through it but I like was like I don't remember how the song goes literally at all and I was like it was fine you know like there was like a few minor things where it be like [ __ ] like I did that feel wrong or something you know but I was like also like as as hard as I was on myself I also was kind of like okay I did have like you know 40 hours to learn or 32 hours or some [ __ ] like that before my show or whatever right they asked me on a Wednesday night I played on a Friday night and like that was crazy it was like so I was also like and they were so like just like dude we made it through the show that's all that matters and like cool was funny the guitarist Joe like everyone's like telling me yeah like we made it through that's all good and then Joe the guitarist is like oh yeah I almost forgot that Andy wasn't playing he's like I he's like honestly I kept forgetting that something was different and I would just look up like oh hey this you know it's Tosh like cool like okay that's all I want to hear but yeah I fully forgot the precourse the Saturday and it was like it's like the easiest thing too and I was just like damn it I forgot how it goes I was so pissed but yeah so what's your mindset like going into a show do you practice a lot beforehand do you have any sort of ritual before because I imagine you've played some dope shows you've played you know smaller clubs too right so like jumping up there and just doing that on 48 hours notice like I I haven't played drums in a while and I guess I got asked to fill in for a band last summer and I did it and during rehearsal I just went down the rabbit hole of like did I turn something off in my house like and I just started thinking about I got too comfortable on the kit yeah and I forgot everything and everything just derailed and I was embarrassed it was like dude like everybody had to stop and it was just like wait what happened you know you want to be professional how do you prep your mind it is mind over matter you got get in the right mindset to just get in there and crush it like what is your process to get there I mean honestly like I just feel like I do it all the like all the time it's just like I'm just so like zoned in where I'm like playing you know like I don't know I don't really think about it like um like anything like like I don't know I I just it's just so normal to me at this point almost like I'm just used to playing shows it's just like going to work kind of you know so it's like you know tight it's awesome I love it so you don't think about it you don't get in your own head no I I really I really don't it's like learning set that last minute like obviously like Fallout Boy it's like like we're about to go on and Pete's like hey Tosh don't [ __ ] this up it's a big deal I'm like awesome that's exactly what I want to hear right now like so that kind of was like terrifying you know but yeah um but they were like everyone's just like so cool especially in a situation like that where like I'm like saving them kind of like they're like well we kind of need you to do this for shows canceled yeah and so I was like perfect like they were so cool about it but like with anything else it's kind of just like I practiced the music so much that it's just like second nature like all literally like I I uh well one I just play drums a lot but like I charted out kind of like a sloppy chart I guess just like counting measures kind of and like giving me ideas of how the song goes and I kind of just remember how that is yeah and that'll just keep me like um I guess I can I always just kind of picture that in my head if I ever like need to think about it but typically by the time I get on stage it's like I know it like the back of my hand I'm just like it's like second nature kind of thing you know that's awesome but like yeah in the last minute thing it does kind of set I'm like damn like you know yeah I did it I I filled in for sage with Landon and that was like you know Sage was you know he's he's already on the plane for bring me so he's just like he was kind of just like yeah you'll be fine like it's easy it's it's land I'm like okay you know and and then sure enough the day of they're like oh yeah so he sent you the set list and they show me the set list I'm like he didn't send me this song and and he's like oh yeah I forgot you got to do that one too I'm like tight so now like I'm on stage like learning this song you know an hour before we go on I'm just like I feel like I know it but I hope that when I get on I on stage I remember it you know cuz like remember it's a different beast when you're up there and the energy is just yeah also it's like you know there's four songs before it three songs after it's like I'm like playing those songs I can't listen to the song and be like cuz if I listen to it again be okay yeah here's how it goes yeah but I'm like I just have to like play it now in front of 20,000 people I'm like sick awesome like let's hope I do that I was like I'm going to Kill You Sage like seriously but when you were coming up like your parents I know they're super supportive of you doing this you know you've got a lot of great mentors and people around you has anybody given you any advice that's stuck with you like through moments like that I used to tour with a ban and one of the dudes said confidence will carry you yeah and I would always say that to myself before I'd play a show or do even a meeting you know for the company just like confidence will carry you you got to be confident like is there anything like that that you a ritual or anything you say to yourself to just get you in that mindset um yeah I mean everyone's always giv me such good advice like I think a big one uh I was playing for Bryce Vine and which I kind of already felt this way before but this the thing he said stuck with me and so I was playing for Bryce wine and the music director Max Bernstein he plays guitar for Taylor Swift he's like super badass and he was music director he's like are you nervous like this is your first TV performance because I was doing like uh Kelly and Ryan or something like that like the Run C chis thing and and um I was like no to be honest I mean there's like 10 people in the room like why would I be nervous and he was like that's a good way to look at it like and he's like always play a stadium gig like a bar gig everyone's always like play a bar gig like you're playing a stadium and he's like but honestly you'll be better off just playing a stadium like you're playing a bar gig because it's just then you're comfortable and that's what everyone wants to see you know and so I guess I I think about that one every once in a while when everyone asks if I'm nervous I'm just like no it's like to me it's like going and doing a bargate for my friends you know and like which I'd probably be more nervous for because I would be like my friends are going to make fun of me for this or some [ __ ] you know like I mean I'm make fun of myself when I watch videos of me performing I'm like really I do that like damn dude like that's sick what what what who who are who are influences for you you know you've got such a unique style that is Tosh oh thanks man you know and like who who did you learn that from obviously your dad's a drummer and so supportive like you guys came to our booth at n every year and I would always look forward to seeing you and your dad and your parents like yeah you guys he they support you clearly and that that always meant a lot to me like parents supporting their kids anything in life obviously in music though for me like my parents took me to drum lessons and stuff and was it your dad like did he show you music when you were a kid like how did you how did you kind of fine-tune your style when you were coming up um yeah my dad I definitely just like ripped him off a million percent like there's old videos of him when he was playing for the English Beat and I literally just stole everything from him like it's which is like my style at least but then like drumming wise I said like Thomas Pon I took so much from like he's my favorite drummer of all time you used to take lessons from him right yeah for like five years years five or six years he is still my favorite drummer of all time like him Dave gr was a big one um and then when I was like younger it was like Tommy Lee was a big one just cuz I loved mly crew and yeah um yeah then there's like you know Aaron Spears and sticks Taylor were big ones as I got a little older but but yeah I would say Thomas bridon and Dave Gro are like my two like um at least how I play I feel like I do my rendition of that kind of you know yeah but you do it in your way yeah yeah I try I I always just kind of try to play how I would want to watch someone play yeah that's like how I've always looked at it um just cuz I get so annoyed watching people like just you know do one thing that I'm like okay you just saw that from someone and I mean no no offense like you take take inspiration from everyone like I think that's the coolest thing ever but I'm like I just you know I just would play how I would want to watch someone play I don't really try to do anything for anyone else at least when I play you know at least like style-wise and stuff like that I play exactly how I how I would like to watch a drummer play you know totally the one thing that comes to mind when I think of you and I have thought about this for a while is consistency on all fronts right like learning how to play the drums the style that we're talking about right now and just being locked into what you know you want to do also social media right like it's such a it's still new it's Instagram all this stuff's been out for a while but you're very consistent on the videos that you put out in the content and I'm sure that's paid off getting you gigs and things like that what drove your consistency in just playing the drums obviously there's the element of like they're drums and they're dopee like why wouldn't you want to play them but like your your mindset came across to me anyway seeing you at the Nam trade shows and just watching your videos like this dude is driven beyond beyond just wanting to be consistent and put out content like the love and the passion is so embedded into you what kind of drove that throughout the years um well I mean for me I just like I literally I've always just love drums like it's all I want to do I'm not really good at anything but drums like it's all I want to do and um I I kind of just like literally you can't get me off them even now like this morning I played for hours until you got here you know like I just I love playing drums and and so that's like with the playing side of things that's what um that's what really drove me and then like Instagram I literally started like an Instagram and posting videos just so I could get Thomas brion's attention that was like the whole reason because I was like if I post videos and he sees me play maybe he'll think I'm sick and give me drum lessons and that was like my whole goal my mom was like you're not going to post my mom's like you're going to get a pedophile on there like trying to you know like reach out and trying to hang out with you and I'm like no Mom I just literally want Thomas P she's like how do you know that's actually Thomas Pidgeon like my mom's like that's stupid don't post drum videos you know and and she was like so supportive but she also was like that's weird like you're going to get like yeah being a mom like you're going to get like some weird foot fetish dude like and I did too that's a whole other crazy story I had someone sorry I'm going to go off on this tangent real quick I had someone like post a foot cam when I was like you know 12 or 13 and I was like dude sick they want to see my foot technique so I'm like trying to prop my dad's phone up because my phone I couldn't post videos on or something so I'm like Pro my dad's phone up and I'm like posting this video and I'm like I did it and I like tagged the person and I was like SI but I didn't click on their account and then they write like do it Barefoot I'm like what the [ __ ] like and I like click on it and it's a [ __ ] foot fetish account for it's like teen boy feet lover [ __ ] I but I like I just didn't even think of anything cuz I was [ __ ] stupid and 12 years old or something and like I'm just like oh this person like thinks I've like like Fast doubles on my Bas or something I was like he wants to see my yeah he wants to see my technique and it was just a foot FSH dude but yeah anyway sorry about that the whole reason I started posting videos was to get Thomas brid's attention yeah because I just wanted him to see me and think I was a good drummer and literally like the second video I posted he was like well you're sick dude and then I um he like followed me and I I went to go see him play like right down the street for it was actually a n Afterparty cool and he was playing at it and like it was a bar so my dad like h me up in the window and he came out and uh he recognized me was like you're the kid from Instagram and dude and uh I like went to his Clinic like a week later he was like come to my clinic you and your dad should come so we came and he like let me play in front of everyone which was like the craziest thing ever dude and uh and I was like I want you to give me drum lessons he's like okay like cool and so I would take a lesson with him like pretty much like about once a month or whenever he was in town like yeah never more than like once a month I don't think just cuz he was so busy he's busy and he's far right he's up he's in a bay yeah but he would come down here all the time like he would do like like day trips down here and just give lessons all day kind of thing and that's awesome so I would take lessons with him for like five years and I started touring at the last one he's like man I don't even know what to show you so I was like which is so like not true because he can show me things forever cuz he's so good at drums yeah but he was just like I don't know like he's like let's just like jam and then and then it kind of just like started touring and he got busy I got busy but um but yeah I fully was like just his student for like five years or something like that he was the best dude so sick so now you know there's a lot of young kids coming up in the music industry in the scene whatever drums if they want to make a brand or a band play guitar sing whatever yeah you know what looking back you're still so young and you have so much life left in your career and everything that you want to do I'm sure you can and I want to talk about you know things that you want to accomplish later on but like looking at younger drummers coming up I'm sure there's a lot of kids that DM you yeah like hey this and that asking for tips and tricks and things like what's some of the advice that you could give to those kids whether it's getting good at their instrument or creating relationships and networking you know in the business and doing that sort of stuff like looking back what what were some of the things that worked out worked well for you yeah so I think um something I would like literally tell myself is like don't be in such a rush cuz I was in such a rush I was like 15 and like dude why am I not on tour yet like man this sucks like I'm never going to make it being like 15 and like and then looking back I'm like dude that was so young like it was like it was tripping you know and like yeah I think that's like biggest thing is everyone's in a rush to like be on tour and like be famous and stuff and like like that one that's like weird and like that's like the should be the least of your worries if you really love drums but like um too like being on tour it's like I think people think that that's that's it you're on tour you're good man like you made it and it's like I would just spend all your time like practicing you know like that's my biggest just advice for everyone is like if you really love it like it's it's a job you know it's like you're at a job 8 hours a day day like why why should you not be practicing 8 hours a day you know and um and I just like I I think about it all the time like it's just drums are like all I want to do and that's all I love to do and I think that's like the biggest thing is like people tend to rush into things a lot of younger I mean I did too I was like the same way but um I I don't think it necessarily benefited me at all being like being on tour was cool you know I learned what touring was like that was awesome but um it's just so different when you're younger you know like like you want be on the road you want to be doing stuff but really it doesn't necessarily help you in your career a lot like it it'll just you know you'll have people then who become your friends which is cool you know and like but now I'm like I'm older and like none of that really like what I did touring when I was 16 really benefited my what I'm doing right now like it was cool but I was in a completely different world I was playing for a jazz funk artist and like that was cool you know but then like and I thought that's what I was going to be doing was like that style of stuff like my dream gig was like Erica abadu like that was like all I wanted to do I never even like played Rock drums at all and then I just like randomly like you know a few years ago during the pandemic started you know posting videos playing Rock stuff just cuz that's what I was enjoying doing and yeah um and then it all kind of changed from there you know so it's just like everyone I played for it's all so different and stuff and it being on tour is only going to help you if it's you got to think about it one think about it is this actually going to benefit me or is this just to go on tour like is this actually something that's going to help me in my career I mean if it's life changing and like you know some massive artist is like wants to bring you out it's like dude do it but like is it really on tour to be or is it really worth it to be on tour as like a little kid like so I I don't know I I would say that's the biggest thing is don't necessarily rush into it and don't think you're you're owed anything you know cuz you're a kid it's like what could you possibly have done at this point to deserve like there's people working their whole lives type of thing you know like um I'm just kind of rambling right now but yeah I think that's a that's a like just a big thing is like not rushing into stuff and like not thinking your your old things kind of just like be yourself practice drums as much as you can and like and just be a genuine person like you know no one owes you anything like you know at the end of the day it's like we're all doing the same type of thing you know no matter what your age is and it's I mean because age doesn't really matter in like the music industry cuz like some of my best friends are in their 40s and then some of my best friends are my age and like you know it's like age isn't really like like you know such a big deal I guess like so I think it's easy to get caught up in that like well it doesn't matter you know like it's just it's all music but it still is like you know you're a kid like your lives are different than like a an adult who has a family and kids and stuff and and I I don't think it's going to like I don't know I just you got to there's a lot to learn kind of thing you know and and um you can learn it all and and and but it just takes time and you shouldn't have to rush into anything and you're not you're not going to overnight become Travis Barker because at you know 12 years old or or something it's just not how it works you know right yeah and he Travis Barker already exists like be you do your thing exactly exactly I think parents too you know I I had always kind of thought this being embedded into this industry and like having a lot of the younger drummers hitting SJC up because of the people that we have playing our drums you know the influencers if you can call them that whatever um and I would you know become friends with the parents and I feel like now being a parent myself I feel like there's a there's a duty of the parent to like make sure that the kid is learning lessons like that and having the right mentors in the industry like you did with Thomas Pon learning the drums and the craft of actually playing the instrument but also learning the other side of like the dos and the don'ts and like yes on one hand you can learn that being on the road but I think there's something to be said about taking your time and understanding that you really have to be patient you know because I think part of for me anyway and I've kind of uh experienced the similar uh Common Thread with creatives is like we're all kind of impatient and like yeah we want to do things now and experience it now but if you don't go through the trials and tribulations of just the journey as it naturally and organically is going to happen and come to you at the right time you're not going to learn or be presented with the opportunity that will be the life-changing opportunity where you've already learned all the other stuff that you should have to take that opportunity and not mess it up yeah you know and I'm I get really impatient where I'm like going after a drummer trying to get somebody to like C SJ see and like see if we can work together we do it and it's like design the kit make the kit they're playing I'm like already on to the next thing try to be more patient of like enjoy that process you know dude it's that's the hardest thing for me cuz like I think it's it's not a bad thing you know it's just how we are but like I'm the same way dude like where like I'll be playing for someone and I'll be thinking about the next thing and it's like I can't even enjoy like the fact that I'm on tour playing for one of my favorite artists or favorite bands or something like and it's kind of like a curse and sometimes in some ways because I'm like I need to just like sit back and be cool and like be stoked that I'm doing this but I totally am like sitting there just like this is [ __ ] like I should be doing this like I want to do this I want to do this you know and like yeah but yeah going going back to that though like I I think um there's a lot of like a good example is like I was so in a hurry to get on tour and and back to the Nam show I was there my first time there probably like the first time we met um I was like 11 or something you know and yeah and uh this guy comes up to me and is like hey I'm like I'm holding auditions for this band I won't say the name of the band but it was like some band and they were going to go on tour with this other band it was like this whole thing it was like a label put together band I don't think it was supposed to be that but it was like a label was putting together a band and I got asked to audition they wanted young people and so I like he was like you're you look a little too young but like you know I saw you playing you sound great like I'd love to you know have you come in he was just helping them find people basically I went into audition and it was me and Nicole Row from Panic at the Disco were were both auditioning she was auditioning on bass and I was auditioning on drums and neither of us got I won't give away I don't want to like I mean she won't give a [ __ ] but she was too old I was too young basically they wanted like 14 to 17 I was 11 she's she's 10 years older than me I think but um it was basically like we didn't get it because of that and I like I remember being so bummed like dude like I should have got that like I I you know this could be my whatever this could be this this could be like I could I think I I kept just being like I this could be like my five six of summer or something like that because I think like I think they were supposed to like do a tour with them or something it was like something they were affiliated with them somehow and um I remember being like so so bummed about it and then looking at it like years later like Nicole's playing for panic at the Disco I'm like living out my dream playing for all like my favorite bands and stuff and like uh I I remember well I was filling in for Fallout Boy I saw like Nicole was playing for Incubus at the same time and and then I saw a video of this band and no shame to anyone or or and it was like the same band and like you know they're about to like do their you know record show at this like bar what you know something I just remember being like man like if I would have gotten stuck in that I would have been so bummed and like so you really can't force anything you got to just let life take its course kind of thing and in the moment when you're when you're bummed and so passionate and want it and you can taste it you can feel it it's hard to get out of that and it is you can go into a dark place of just like dang but you have to snap out of that and just keep honing in on your craft doing your thing because something else is around the corner whether it's in a week a year you don't know there's always going to be something else there if you're passionate and dedicated and just Relentless try you know just trying to get there you're going to get there yeah fully exactly I mean that's the whole thing is like it it's just life happens at different times for everyone you know because at 11 years old you think like dude this is it I'm about to do it I'm about to like make it or whatever yeah and then you know and then you start to you know do do real things you're like oh making it is overrated like I'm like I still haven't made it dude likeing it is the process like the fun part you're making it every day that you're doing something whether you're in here chopping it up in the shed or you're on stage playing like that's all just part of the process is so hard to understand even me saying it is like me reminding myself of like that's what it is yeah it's hard to in the moment like actually feel that but it is so accurate and everybody that I talk to you know on this journey of just like chatting with my buds in the industries whether it's on the business side the creative side the music side it's like that's what it is we're creatives and we're impatient but if this didn't happen I wouldn't be here right now we probably wouldn't be talking yeah you know there's always something around the corner if you just stay dedicated to it yeah exactly man it's all just about just you know doing what you love and if you're as long as you're happy that's all that really matters it took a you know it takes a while to learn that cuz I remember you know even like I'd be like you know like 17 I was like 17 playing for like this big Italian artist Mario beyonde and I would like be complaining about stuff and like my my parents are like dude suck it up like suck it up you wanted to be there man you're there like you're getting paid more money than like anyone we know like to go play for this Italian jazz artist like yeah you're living in five star hotels in Italy like you can you're fine dude like and I'm like I guess you're right you know like but I would like yeah and then it's like but then the thing is I would like do that and I would like you know complain about stuff and then I got back and went on tour with Carly Hansen touring in a in a sprinter van you know and I was like dude this is it like we're stoked you know it's like it's all just like your attitude going into it kind of and like and I learned that really young like being on T like why am I complaining this is stupid I'm like living my dream life like heck yeah I don't have bills to pay I don't have like anyone to trip on like yeah I'm stoked on everything that's awesome what was that life Chang what was the lifechanging gig for you so far like the first gig that you got to call for of yo we want you to come play fill in do whatever what was that and what did that feel like for you um I mean a lot of big ones happened all at the same time so it was kind of just like an overwhelming like literally within the span of a week I got um machine Kelly Young Thug and Bad Bunny all in one week I got all those calls and and just cuz videos were released later I did most of them like within the span of a month like I was doing them all at the same time like I did the Billboard Music Awards and went and got on a private jet to go to the n500 with MGK like you know so it all kind of was like at the same time so I think that week in general was just like kind of lifechanging you know just because I was like oh like I'm finally like cuz I had done so much stuff but like the like the biggest artist I had done was that Mario Beyond guy and like no one in the US knew him so it was kind of like he was massive over there I got to play Arenas in Italy but come back here and they're like who like was that you know what type of music is that you know yeah um that was the first time that I played for people that like family and friends like knew and not just because I was playing for them like they actually had already heard of them um so like yeah on my 20th birthday Rook MGK's drummer called me and was like he had already like I felt like he had mentioned something you know before but like nothing really had happened until like then and he was like um they're not going to cancel these shows and I his leg was still broken he couldn't play oh yeah and so he was like can you do him I was yeah absolutely but and I like kicked everyone out on my birthday so I could start learning the songs because I was like all right all right guys like I mean it was pandemic so there's only a few people over we were all like doing the outside thing I was like all right you guys got to go now I'm going to go start learning some songs and and I literally just started learning the album and um and yeah so like worked out so I like that happened and then like I was you know like whatever two weeks later we played that show and then like my friend called me and it's like hey bad Bunny's doing the Billboard Music Awards and um we want you on drums and I was like perfect you know so I went and did that and then like a week after that it was like my other friends like hey I'm doing tiny Des with young thug we want you on drums are you down I was like yeah absolutely so it kind of all just like started happening yeah and then right around that same time uh Jaden's team like or like it was actually a friend and like mutual friend that we had like introduced us I went by to his house I thought we were just going on like a double date like and I just like and then his whole management team was there and I was like oh tight and the record label's all there I'm like oh so this is like more than just hanging out like yeah and they asked if I wanted to do the tour I was like sick worked out um amazing I started playing for him like then it was like Lil NX came right after that because I did he did like this live Lounge thing in in London but it was filmed here so like same thing though I was like doing that with him and like I would rehearse with him all day and then I like had to like go to like Jaden's release thing at night and then it was like I did that and started rehearsals for like the tour with Jaden and MGK right after so it all just kind of was like so back toback I didn't have time to be like oh this one thing was like life-changing but I would say like MGK was the first time I got a call where I was like oh [ __ ] like I'm playing for someone who's like actually a big deal like this is cool you know like and that was crazy but I mean it just everything happened so fast I didn't even have time to think about like money or or like making it or anything like that or like being like this is changing like I was just so focused on like doing a good job you know um oh another big one was actually Ashton Irwin from 56 I did his solo thing during the pandemic which was like the coolest thing because I think that's when people saw that I could be a rock drummer kind of because before that I had only been doing like pop and Funk and Jazz and stuff um so I think people sing that like that helped a lot too but um but once again I was just so focused on it being like doing a job I didn't even think about what it would happen and then um but then yeah I mean it all just kind of like kept going and stuff and and like doing kid looy was like that was really cool um I think the first thing where I like couldn't believe I was playing for the band was Fallout Boy though which was just kind of recently because I was like i' been playing for all these big people but then like getting to play for a band who's older than me I think for some reason in my head that was just like the coolest thing ever cuz like I've been playing for all these people who just recently blew up kind of thing um at least with like the last 10 years you know and then so to play for Fallout Boy Who it's like they started two they started as a band two months before I was born and we talk about it all the time that's so crazy I like yeah I like drunk checked Pete Wentz being like your band's older than me like the same night I played for them you know yeah that's amazing yeah so it just I think that was the first time where I was like oh [ __ ] like this is like the coolest thing ever yeah and I would always just I would also just like think back to the stories of like Josh freeze filling in for 311 with like a like a day notice or something yeah and so I was like so what I was doing was like I was kind of like I was like I never I didn't want to think about it until after I did the show because I was like What if I don't pull it off you know so I just was like I'm not going to think about it but then after I was like hey it's kind of like what Josh freeze did yeah but it was a whole thing too I didn't get to enjoy it either because like the first show I'm just stressed that it's going to go well I'm like awesome now I can have fun tomorrow then our [ __ ] tour bus breaks down and so the all the Fallout boys there I'm on the tour bus with royal and the serpent because we were already on the tour opening so I was like can I just stay on the bus with my band and they're like yeah no worries so I just did that and then our [ __ ] bus broks down so I have to like I wake up like frantically like to a rental car pulling up to the bus like trying to grab clothes out of my bag and like go and so I like make it there in time for the show and like it was like so stressful and so I'm like damn I really don't get to like enjoy this and then and then like Andy was set to come back the next day and I'm just like damn it dude like I didn't get to enjoy it at all like and I was like it was still like amazing looking back but I I was like wishing the moment I got to like actually just have at least one day where I was like stoked on like okay right playing Fallout Boy tonight it's a great day but like life keeping you on your feet man yeah dudee straight up I'm just like stressed the whole time seriously what other crazy [ __ ] has happened to you on tour like that because that's that's G to happen every time right like you're GNA have something crazy bus breaks down you know what other kind of crazy fun tour memories do you have that that stick out is like I'm never G to forget that or I barely made it out alive from that yeah well I mean I got arrested in Russia when I was like 16 kind of thing like so that was like a trip like like I say like arrested but like I was fine you know you know it was like we just like got like the whole crew I got arrested but I was fine it wasn't like yeah it wasn't like it wasn't like getting arrested in movies where like you know like you get tackled by like a SWAT team which is what I was thinking like would happen in Russia but like they just took us all like this holding room like I still to this day don't even know what happened I think they were just being racist to be honest um I was like like the only white person in my crew so I think they were being racist towards everyone else and like and then we just kind of got put in like this holding cell for like 14 hours and and um I just remember like keeping my phone on me and being like dude if they take my phone I'm screwed like and so I would just like rolled over cuz I was worried they were going to take it so I would like roll over I still had all my clothes on you know so I'm just like wearing my jacket and just like would hide it in my jacket and like texting my dad in the middle of the night and and like the first thing he says like whatever you do is just don't tell your mom like he's like cuz then she's going to freak out like dude and he's like he's like I don't need to deal with that right now she's asleep he's like so and he's like you didn't tell her did you I'm like no he's like all right sick cuz I just can't deal with handling like that right now he's like oh my goodness dude and it all got figured out you know it was fine like 14 hours speaking Russian I don't know what the [ __ ] going on but then eventually like 14 hours after sitting in this room we go and we have a flight to Turkey or whatever wherever we had to go next but unbelievable but yeah that was kind of a trip just CU it was like my first year of touring Russia and I've been to Russia like nine times or something like that like something like played played there like nine times like wow um and I haven't gone back since I was 17 so it's like just in the span of like a year i' played there like seven times or something um there's a lot that just like random stuff though like uh I'm trying to think of some like a funny story or something that just a lot of just being an idiot I fell down the stairs in Mexico um cuz yeah I was like first time doing a show with Thomas bridon and I was just like so psyched because obviously he's my favorite drummer and yeah I just remember like yeah I woke like going to the bathroom and like eating [ __ ] down the stairs and was so embarrassed like it's on security cam footage still like I was like damn it dude like that was that was funny but I don't know there's just a bunch of random stuff you got this map up there with pins in it right yeah all the places you've been you've been to some wild places dude that thing is filling up is there anywhere on there that you're just like I gotta go there um I mean dude I've been like so I always said my dream place was like South America but I've been twice and where's your favorite spot in South America probably South Pao Brazil I love it dude it's like it's like the New York of down there and I love New York so much like um so it's just like a big city and like what's your favorite thing to do there besides playing drums yeah besides playing drums um dude the food is just so insane it's so insane there's like fada it's like this um for anyone who doesn't know it's like this like I hate like soups but it's like a stew that like goes on rice and it's like it's almost just like a type of gravy with like a bunch of different meats and stuff yeah and I I mean I've never had it up here so I've only had it both times I was in South America and I literally could live off that stuff um I really I mean I guess I don't even have I think I don't even have pins in Mexico where I've been but um yeah there's like I'm trying to think of where I'd want to go I'd love to hit like Indonesia or something like that I feel like that'd be cool yeah um oh I've never been to like Sweden or Norway which is like weird because I've been everywhere else in Europe you've been to Russia seven times but not Sweden yeah it's so weird which is like you you have to kind of go through there to get to a lot of the other major cities You' think but I uh I I think I really want I really want to go back to either of those uh cool just cuz I mean I don't know there's so many places I want to go back though like like um I I could go to South America I could live down there dude it's like the best place ever awesome um but yeah Europe up it's like I toured so much when I was younger and I think I like At first took it for granted until I was playing for like Cari um because it was her first time touring I had already been touring and like everyone that I was touring with was like so just had been doing it for years and it wasn't like anything new so I was like whatever you know and so there's a lot of time just like hanging out in the hotel with everyone and just like in our in like oh let's go down and get dinner in the lobby type thing and it's like stuff like that um and like no one wanted to go out they're like calling their wives and stuff where I was like 16 and just like dude like I need to like do something yeah and um so when I was touring with then when after that I went to play for Carly it was like fresh you know like she was just so psyched on everything and I um yeah I so it was like that's when I really started to like see [ __ ] and go see all like the big SES and that's when I was like okay yeah now I've actually been everywhere in Europe you know like sick rather than just playing a show like I got to like fully enjoy it and stuff and and our first time over in Europe we were opening for young blood and we shared a tour bus with them so it was like we weren't in a van or anything like it was like for us you know you play your 30 minutes and you got nothing else to do you're fine like you get to ride on their bus yeah the his crew was packing our stuff up for us we're just like sick I'm like dude this is the best thing ever it's like it's like being the headliner was still just doing an opening set you know and so I got to like go you know explore and like we saw so much [ __ ] so it was like that was when I really got got to enjoy it but I haven't been back in a while just because like you know Co and stuff made it hard to tour over there and then uh Jaden like had to cancel just for for different reasons had to cancel three different like Europe tours so I was just like keep not going to Europe and I'm like so I'm so I'm going back in March though so I'm psyched um between touring in a van or a bus which one would you prefer uh bus and just cuz I love sleeping on a tour bus yeah like get good sleep on that yeah dude it's like the best man and and even like my first tour I flew to every show because the artist she loved flying so um or I think she just preferred it to like driving or being on a bus or something so we would fly to every show so when I finally got to be on a tour bus I was like dude I never want to [ __ ] fly again like this is the coolest thing ever and and I've always been good at sleeping anywhere but like yeah tour bus is like a different thing like I do where I was playing for kid Leroy and we had hotels in every city which was like new to me because like I had been so used to like you sleep on the tour bus unless you have a day off and like even then like day off it's like if it's just a halfway drive or something like you get you know you will get like a shared room you know with everyone to shower in and stuff and you have to drive again that night so you don't sleep in the hotel but like with ly we got to like have a um we had like a hotel room in every city like at least the band did and so I was like I would just wouldn't even go dude I would just leave the room empty I would never even go cuz I was just like so used to like I'll just like shower at the venues and hang on the bus like I don't mind and they're like you're going to shower at the venue I'm like yeah dude I've [ __ ] been showering at venues my whole life dude like what do you mean like that's normal like awesome um so I got so used to like you know I was just being on a bus and like that's I loved it so I'm like I'm not going to Uber 20 minutes to this hotel where I'm just going to lay there for like 3 hours I'm just going to stay here I have my own green room with the like the band had our own green room so it would just be mine because everyone else would leave and I'm like just shower there and stay on the bus and cruise around the venue and stuff like I uh yeah I'm so used to I just love tour buses man I love sleeping on them like even when I hear about like um like these B like we had a like in South America we had like a private uh private plane taking us to each City because it was like I think it was MGK Jaden and then I believe dojacat I don't remember though we didn't really see anyone because it was just like such a big plane it was like a charter plane not like a private jet like um so and I just remember being like man like I hear of bands doing that in the US like the really big bands will like do that in the US like mle crew was doing that I think with de leopard and stuff and like and I'm like I feel like I would hate this like like this would be terrible even though you don't have to like go to the airport like it would still suck dude like I'd rather just wake up at the venue in a tour bus I you like being in the zone and in the world of being on tour yeah I'm like I'm on tour why am I going to try to trick myself into thinking I'm not like the the routine of being on tour is awesome it's like you're you're in it coming home from a tour like that do you find it hard to adapt and adjust to like waking up in your bed and being like okay wait what where where where am I I mean a little bit I just um I get super angry when stuff changes it's like the weirdest like unnecessary stuff like I got home like there used to be a tree and our like there's still a stump like right there in the front yard and I would like be I remember like came home like the [ __ ] is this dude like where' the tree go and they're like I don't know like overgrown it's not even a big tree it's just like a little almond tree like and I was like so pissed about it I like this is [ __ ] man like I miss everything being on the road and then I'm like oh wait I'm just being dramatic right now like but I think that's the the weirdest thing for me is just coming home and seeing stuff different um it is weird I feel like probably weirder for like my family and friends and stuff like we're like everything's just the same and then I come home and I'm like yeah I got all this stuff to tell you like this this this and it's just like okay like dude we just been doing I'm like so what's new with you and they're just like same [ __ ] you know like the cool part about touring though right is like you get the experience you get just beyond obviously playing music the cities you're in the people you're meeting there's going to be something crazy happening every day yeah for sure see just seeing people in the streets in different cities like yeah yeah you just see so much stuff and you know it's like and and also it's cool that's I think what has been like the coolest for me playing for different people which obviously like my dream is to like be in a band like I've always wanted to like join a band but like getting to play for all these different people Everyone tours completely different everyone like acts completely different on the road and I kind of like that you get to like see how everyone is in different you know like I can go out um with Jaden it's just one big party the whole time we're all just having fun the whole time you know and then and then you go out with other people and everyone's like more reserved like adults it's like that's cool too and you get to see all the different Vibes of how Ru is and I really enjoy just kind of like being like you know um seeing how everyone is and kind of adapting to whatever world I'm in cuz I'm like sure I can go party and have fun I can also go you know chill and FaceTime my dad you know like same [ __ ] you know that's awesome what's a dream band or a dream artist you'd like to play for slash with uh Oasis if they could do a reunion tour and have me play for them that's my absolute dream dope like lifelong dream is if Oasis ever did a reunion tour um if Tico Torres ever left Bon joovie like I don't know and then I also you would crush that right dude both of those for sure but the Bon Joy thing you would actually I need to raise him up a little bit how you know ride in the corner dude um and then there's just so many man like Lim biscuit would be crazy I love I love so much different types of music so like getting Fallout to play for Fallout Boy was like a a check off The Bucket List even though like that wasn't necessarily what I like grew up on it's still like getting to play for a band like that is like the dream so I mean any any like band like um like how like uh Brandon just joined The Offspring yeah like that like something like that would be like my dream to go join like an older band I think yeah just because like um I'd love to play with people who just been you know just been doing it for so long and like have their priorties machine and it's just R yeah just like already moving you don't want to you know and you can just hop in and and do what's already going you know it's like oh yeah um but it is super fun playing for all these newer artists and stuff and younger artists it's super sick but I just I think that's that's my dream but any any band like that would be so sick to me and I'm just like such a fan of music like there's like countless bands that I could name their entire catalog and play their enti entire catalog like just cuz I love so much music and I mean I'll be in here for 10 hours a day and half of that's just playing along the music even you know totally just cuz it's so fun you know what was the first show you ever went to um well I went to so many shows seeing my dad play like that I don't remember i' would say the first one I remember being like wanting to go to and getting to go to I think it was bad religion um but my grandpa worked on uh Mike Durant's cars and stuff so I think I think I don't know if we got to go see green day before that it was right around the same time yeah but bad religion was like the first one that I specifically wanted to go to like and I got to go to and I was so psyched on that's sick um which is funny because like my favorite music was always like R&B and like rap and stuff but I found all that stuff on just like so interesting like the fast drums I loved it you know like such a crazy world too because you you do have that like I don't want to say eclectic because you're you're you've got your style but you have such an array of of vibe you know in your drumming that's so cool to uh to see and you can play anything you can get into any situation and be able to play it you know I played drums and I was a punk drummer I'm like I'm just goingon to do the punk be you know but like it's different you know you have to be able to you know four on the floor and be in the pocket but then also be able to groove you know that's so powerful and impactful as a drummer oh thanks man yeah I love I just love being able to play everything I think even if I uh did join like randomly like join Oasis or something and was just like their drummer I'd still be in here playing every type of music every day you know it's like that's like I know for a fact I'd be doing that still doing little side shows on the you know doing whatever because it's just so fun and so sick and and playing drums is what I love to do it's my hobby as well as my job you know so I look at it like that and that's why I always am like I play with my like I supposed start bands and stuff with my friends and stuff and and uh and I'm not tripping on on money or anything cuz it's just like it's what I love to do it's like you know people who work a normal job go and do that [ __ ] too you know 100% you uh I remember at n 202 maybe 2019 you got the you got the job stopper hand tattoo that was your first tattoo ever oh yeah yeah it was my first big tattoo I had a little like like thing on my ankle so I could hide it from my mom cuz I was 17 and then I know everyone's like yeah was like tripping on this I was like oh is that was that a B I didn't know like that that wasn't like you couldn't get a like a job with that but not that I was even tripping on it times have changed I'm sure you could but I just remember seeing you at n and I'd seen you again since you were like 11 or 12 cruising around n You' come to the booth we'd say what's up and I was like bro you just got your hand blasted like nothing else and you're like no just did my hand yeah and I'm like holy [ __ ] bro like you went in on that you've got some work done since then yeah looks sick I was actually so psyched I um so I got my yeah I basically just had my hand on I remember being like I need to we longle so it looks like I have a full sleeve like so people just assume I have a sleeve under here just I like I remember like as lame as that sounds when I was like 18 I was like that's what I need to do like that'll look so cool and um yeah I say you know I just I liked I loved hadto I couldn't afford a sleeve at the time so I was like start there I'll start with the hand and eventually I'll get a sleeve cuz I don't want to like have half a sleeve type of thing that's how I was looking at it I was like I can't afford a sleep so I don't want to do like just have like half a sleeve for like 3 years or something you know and then um but yeah I did mg can I ended up meeting this artist Matt vot who's like was in was like one of my favorite tattoo artists like I was I like would sit there during the P pandemic and just watch his um his like Tik Tok videos of him like doing tattoos and stuff and I just was like dude this guy's insane and then he followed me after I was doing machine and Kelly and he was like dude you're a badass drummer we started talking and literally that night the night that he followed me and like DM me I was like I want to meet you he's like what are you doing tonight and I was like uh nothing and I'll or we actually were having like a party here and I think I left early to go meet him oh yeah it was my brother's graduation party from or some [ __ ] like that and I was like I'm sorry guys I got to go meet this tattoo artist yeah and I met him and then he was like yeah I'd love to work on it I was like dude I want to pull a trigger I was like I want to get you know I want to get like this whatever a skull right here a skeleton right here and he's like he's like uh I'd rather just give you a whole sleeve you know like would you want to do that and I was like yeah let's do it you know so he like basically just talked me into getting a whole sleeve and so doing that and we're still working on it like I still got this little part empty right here that's going to hurt a little bit Yeah I have it like a little bit over here but it's not like too B small but um I feel like the shittiest part is right here right on the bone yeah I'm like damn man that sucks like my dad like my dad has like the old school way so he didn't even know cuz like you know like the old school way they would like stop like right here right just I think just for jobs probably honestly but yep when I did mine I was like I want to go just a little bit beyond the normal where you'd stop it when you're wearing like a suit exactly so you can still kind of Po out I just you know I I couldn't do the hand I'm like I'm not going to do the hand but go just a little bit beyond the wrist but yeah D I love that but um yeah so I already had my hand done he was like well I can just work from that up and do a sleeve dud it looks so dope and then uh and now it's like now we're just going to go do my neck and do everything and he's like he's in my opinion one of the best tattoo artists in the world I love him so good and well I guess yeah I can just show you work but he's great but then I get a lot of stupid tour tattoos me and Jaden have sick dick right here I have see that one it's we got matching sick dick tattoos in New York um back I because I'll like meet these tattoo ours and like dude come hang at the show like you want to bring your tattoo in i d I'm the same I got mine are more on my ankles and my legs right you you go hard man you got that right on your yeah I got [ __ ] on my chest I don't I don't want to [ __ ] with the mic but like I got I got [ __ ] written on my chest which is actually like unintentional I wanted it on my collar bone uh I mean she's a great artist the girl did she did the the little skele or little skull right here too um but I wasn't really watching it I don't think I would like specify that I wanted it on my collar bone I was like yeah I want it like right here on my collar bone and then she like did it below and I like damn okay maybe I'll get it twice or something you know so I might do that eventually just you know but um but yeah I got a lot of stupid ones I got uh this little cowboy Kermit down here sick which I'm not even like a huge Muppets fan but the guy was coming to tattoo Jaden and then the opening band Beauty School Dropout because they had the song Freak that came out and um it was like there it was like the tattoo like it was like the logo of the song or something yeah and no offense I love those guys hate that song though and I was like I don't see the [ __ ] point in like getting a tattoo for a song I don't even like you know I'll get stupid tattoos but I was like really like that one and and and um I was like what else can you do he's like oh I don't want to like freehand something on you and then he's like I literally have one like little stencil he's like unless you would like want a cowboy Kermit he's like cuz I have this stencil he's like but otherwise I can't do it I was like I'll do that he's like really and I was like yeah dude it's a great story and then apparently they're in a band called not a toy and they're really sick actually but they um I think the drummer actually has an SJC kit really I yeah I think I saw him playing now yeah he definitely does sick um but um it was I didn't realize it was their band tattoo so now I'm like an unofficial member of not a toy which is hilarious that's awesome but yeah bunch of stupid ones that I got the Taylor Hawkins went up there and what's next on the list for uh stupid or silly or even cool tattoos they're all cool but you know meaningful in a different way yeah less meaningful I'm uh I'm getting the waho menu and a QR code tattooed on my arm in like a week and a half which is going to be hilar or it's in like a week now I think it's like week from tomorrow or yeah or something like that will the QR code work yeah yeah it'll work it's it's actually I was able to work with Wahoos and get one specifically made for my arm that will work and they're not going to like change because I if that URL ever goes goes away then I'm like dude then I'm screwed what the hell but uh are they going to hook you up with like uh Wahoos for life after that they should dude [ __ ] I they're actually have been awesome they hooked me up with a bunch of a bunch of gift cards and stuff like they Merchants I'm wearing a wahoo shirt right now but you should get a wahoo snare drum dude that would be dope that would actually be sick we should do that either a coll like a sid snare drum just a silly little s snare drum with either like a collage of the menu or just their logo as a bad I think the the logo with the fish on it would be sick or something that would actually be tight make it look like the inside of the store you know it's like yeah um all like the pictures and stuff just yeah that would actually be tight that would really cool that would be really cool let's talk about that I want to do that that would be sick hell yeah send me send me video of when you get that done I want to see that when it's finished yeah it's sick they're coming down um I mean they're from Orange County waho is like started in Orange County so yeah they're um they're coming they're going to film it all themselves and stuff and sick I think we'll do like a bunch of stupid videos with it too I was like let's take advantage of it and like also I was like how funny would that be just to like meet and greets in Europe or like places where they don't even like or like like random countries that they don't speak that great at English like talking to someone just be like dude scan this yeah and they're just like what the [ __ ] is this the menu you should have them make it a like an affiliate thing where if people order from that menu either you get a kickback or they get some sort of special secret menu item like that would be sick it shouldn't just be their normal menu item it should be something where you have your affiliate code attached to it and it's like every order that came from your arm I think it's funnier though just to have the basic ass menu on my arm and people just be like what the [ __ ] and I'm like yeah it's just the Wahoo menu it's like no like nothing no strings attached literally just the menu what's your favorite thing to get at Wahoos um I like their uh their their chicken enchiladas with green sauce the spicy chicken green sauce yeah yeah it's really good um that's probably one of my favorites and then they [ __ ] chicken quesadilla with dude that's like that's like if I don't know what to eat and that's like that's just a safe bet that will always like that the outer Reef burrito goes so hard got everything it's just basically the same as the enchilada buto form kind of thing is there a Wahoos around here right down the street dude have you eaten lunch yet no you want to go get Wahoos yes absolutely W let's go get Wahoos bro I'm slow down Let's Jam on the kit really quick let's do a Little's do a little beat and we'll get some Wahoos yeah are there sticks over there yeah dude fine should we uh should we uh close the door your neighbor's going to hate us oh they won't give a [ __ ] they don't they really don't even care like you got stick oh sick let's do it yeah [Music] yeah [Music] [Music] he [Music] [Music] hell yeah dude sick thanks for the chat yeah dude thanks for letting me talk [ __ ] talk [ __ ] for however long that was
