Understanding Muscle Cells and Contraction
Apr 29, 2025
Lecture Notes: Muscle Cells and the Sliding Filament Model
Introduction
Famous star-crossed lovers: Romeo and Juliet, Helen and Paris, Tristan and Isolde.
Comparable romance in muscle cells: Actin and Myosin proteins.
Actin and Myosin facilitate all muscle movements.
Muscle Tissue Types
Smooth Muscle Tissue
: Found in hollow visceral organs (stomach, airways, blood vessels). Functions involuntarily.
Cardiac Muscle Tissue
: Striated, functions involuntarily to pump blood.
Skeletal Muscle Tissue
: Striated, mostly voluntary control. 640 muscles attach to skeleton, activated by somatic nervous system.
Structure of Skeletal Muscle
Composed of muscle fibers within fibers and multiple layers, akin to a rope.
Myofibrils
: Bundle to form muscle fibers (cells with mitochondria, multiple nuclei, sarcolemma).
Muscle Fibers
: Form larger bundles called fascicles.
Fascicles
: Combine to form muscle organ (e.g., biceps brachii).
Connective Tissue Sheaths
: Provide muscle support and reinforcement.
Muscle Contraction Mechanics
Protein Rules
:
Proteins change shape when stuff binds to them.
Shape changes can allow proteins to bind/unbind.
Myofilaments
:
Actin (thin, twisty strands) and Myosin (thicker strands).
Sarcomere: Segment with actin and myosin, separated by Z lines.
The Sliding Filament Model
Resting State
: Actin and Myosin do not touch.
Obstacle
: Tropomyosin and Troponin block actin sites.
Energy Source
: ATP and calcium remove obstacles, allowing binding.
Contraction Process
:
Myosin binds to actin, releases stored energy, and contracts sarcomere.
ATP breakdown primes myosin for binding.
Calcium unbinds from troponin, resetting tropomyosin.
Conclusion
Muscle contraction and relaxation follow the sliding filament model.
Involves actin and myosin filaments and their interaction with calcium and ATP.
