Lecture Notes: The Hero's Journey

Overview

  • The hero's journey is an algorithmic pattern of transformation.
  • It involves leaving the comfort zone to fulfill a deeper, unconscious need.
  • Empathy with the hero is crucial for emotional engagement.

Characteristics of a Hero

  • Heroes are propelled by universal impulses:
    • Desire to be loved, understood, succeed, survive, be free, take revenge, or fix past mistakes/injustices.
  • Heroes face injustice, often fighting against an oppressive system.
  • Most heroes undergo a transformative arc, changing from apathetic to active.
  • Some heroes catalyze world change without personal transformation.

Storytelling and Empathy

  • Stories challenge our biases, offering new perspectives.
  • We relate to predictable patterns and are resistant to change.
  • The ordinary world of the hero often signifies stagnation.

The Ordinary World vs. Special World

  • Contrast is key, e.g., Dorothy's transition from a colorless world to Oz.
  • The special world introduces chaos and challenges, propelling the hero into freedom.

The Call to Adventure

  • Initiated through messages, disruptions, or villains.
  • Heroes may be compelled or voluntarily seek new experiences.

Resistance and Challenges

  • Heroes face constant resistance, a universal part of their journey.
  • Reality tests the hero, requiring adaptation to a new world.

Refusal of the Call

  • Heroes often resist the call due to fear of the unknown.
  • Resistance is likened to a guardian at the gate, challenging the hero.

The Role of Mentors

  • Mentors guide the hero, offering wisdom and tools for the journey.
  • Mentors can be ethical codes or represent shadow figures.

Crossing the Threshold

  • Symbolized by portals or doors, marking entry into the special world.
  • The hero becomes a beginner again, facing new challenges.

Trials and Allies

  • The hero gains insights and forms alliances to navigate the special world.
  • Trials test the hero's adaptability and resolve.

The Inmost Cave

  • Represents deeper challenges within the special world.
  • The hero confronts internal fears and external adversaries.

The Revelation and Transformation

  • The hero undergoes a critical revelation, leading to transformation.
  • Often involves a confrontation with the shadow self.

The Return

  • The hero returns with new awareness, often with a symbolic reward.
  • The journey emphasizes internal growth and newfound clarity.

Climax and Resolution

  • The story culminates in a transformative climax.
  • The audience gains a new perspective, mirroring the hero's change.
