Overview of the Autonomic Nervous System
Nov 5, 2024
Lecture Notes: Autonomic Nervous System Overview
Key Concepts
Character Foils as an Analogy:
Examples: Holmes & Watson, Kirk & Spock, Ron & Hermione.
Characters are contrasts, not opposites; they complement each other.
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS):
Branch of the peripheral nervous system.
Regulates internal organs, smooth and cardiac muscles, and glands.
Governed by involuntary, fine-tuned adjustments based on CNS signals.
Divisions of ANS
Sympathetic Nervous System
Functions:
Prepares body for 'fight-or-flight'.
Synonymous with stress and arousal.
Anatomy:
Thoracolumbar origin: between thoracic and lumbar vertebrae.
Ganglia close to the spinal cord, allowing broad effect triggering.
Short preganglionic fibers, long postganglionic fibers.
Parasympathetic Nervous System
Functions:
Responsible for 'rest-and-digest'.
Maintains body energy, manages relaxation.
Anatomy:
Craniosacral origin: from the brain base and sacral spinal cord.
Ganglia near or inside effector organs for specific actions.
Long preganglionic fibers, short postganglionic fibers.
Key Anatomical Differences
Nerve Origin:
Sympathetic: thoracolumbar.
Parasympathetic: craniosacral.
Ganglia Location:
Sympathetic: near the spinal cord.
Parasympathetic: near effector organs.
Nerve Fiber Lengths:
Sympathetic: short preganglionic, long postganglionic.
Parasympathetic: long preganglionic, short postganglionic.
Conclusion
ANS divisions explain stress and relaxation responses through complementary mechanisms.
Next lecture will focus on the sympathetic nervous system.
